British Colonies on the east coast of North American continent had been settled by religious refugees seeking to build a pure, Bible-based society. They lived closely with the sense of the supernatural and they intended to build a society based on their religious beliefs. That is what caused numerous quarrels, troubles and accusations among which the witchcraft was quite common and the most dangerous. While witch trials had begun to fade out across much of Europe by the mid-17th century, they continued in the American Colonies. The earliest recorded witchcraft execution in America was in 1647 in Connecticut. The witch hunt in American Colonies culminated with the Salem Trials when over 200 people were accused, and 19 of whom were found guilty and executed by hanging. This collection contains books that depict the history of witchcraft and witch trials in the USA. Witchcraft and the Black Art by John Williams Wickwar Pdf

Originally published in London in the early 1900s, this early work on witchcraft describes the old craft of the witches as a close order. Its members were sworn to secrecy. Although some records were kept, very few of these still exist today. In early ecclesiastic and in mediaeval literature, however, references to witchcraft are numerous. This book endeavours to set out in an interesting manner the story of the craft from earliest times. The book's three hundred and twenty pages contain fourteen comprehensive chapters: Witchcraft: A Primitive Cult. - Initiation and Ceremony. - Spells, The Evil Eye, and Possession. - Practical Witchcraft. - Witchcraft on the Continent. - Werewolves and Vampires. - Blood and Fire in England. - Demons and Mascots. - Witch Hunting cameos. - A Typical English Witch Trial. - Witchcraft in America. - Witchcraft Phantasmagoria. - A Typical Witch Tract. - The Last Phase. This book will prove a fascinating read for anyone interested in the occult arts, and will provide much information to historians of this hitherto arcane subject.

Spellbound by Dominic Alexander Pdf

Why is it that when we think of witches, we imagine them wearing black pointy hats and flying on broomsticks? Why does the number three have such mystical importance? What is the difference between a wizard and a warlock? What exactly are fairies and elves and where do they come from? Spellbound answers all of these questions and more, exploring the truth behind our fascination with myth and magic. From the ancient Egyptian sorcerers to the Land of Oz, Spellbound brings you a clear understanding of the subject's historical importance and the cultural legacy that surrounds it. Understand the meaning of stories such as J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter and J. R. R. Tolkien's epic The Lord of the Rings, which have their roots in history, mythology, and folklore. Wrestle with forces that are as old as human history. Both stories, in different ways, provide a world of magic in which the ordinary and mundane problems of everyday life are not merely forgotten but rather transformed into a heroic landscape. With Spellbound in hand, you can travel back through the ages to trace the very beginnings of these timeless traditions. Learn how the wanderings of Homer's Odysseus, the legend of King Arthur, and the tales of the Brothers Grimm provided sorely needed magic and romance for people trying to live in a difficult and often cruel world. Trace the representation of witches and warlocks throughout art -- with historical illustrations that bring the subject to life. Today, we know the difference between magic and reality, but we still need these stories just as much as ancient peoples -- both as a source of entertainment and comfort and to understand the often unexplainable events happening around us. For anyone intrigued by magical lore, Spellbound will quickly become a true companion. From astrology to healing crystals, this fascinating volume gets to the bottom of every magical mystery. It is a journey worth taking.

Magic and Mystery by Alfred Thompson Pdf

Excerpt from Magic and Mystery: A Popular History Superstition in a nation depends very much upon climate, temperament, religion, and occupation. Notions entertained of supernatural beings or things, though generally based upon one broad feature common to all countries, differ so essentially respecting the form, character, habits, and powers of these beings that they appear to have been drawn from sources widely removed. The advance of knowledge and the truths of evolution have almost convinced us that belief in the supernatural (unrevealed) is nothing but the creation of the human brain, impressed upon the imagination of our ancestors at periods when such impressions were likely to be strong and permanent, and transmitted within the iron-bound certainty of the laws of heredity. Legends have forever been beheld through different prejudices and impressions. They have constantly changed with the media and vistas through which they have been viewed. Hence their different shape, character, and attributes in different countries, and the frequent absence of rational analogy with respect to them even in the same. Where now are the multitudinous creation of the old Greek and Roman mythologies? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
