A Boomer's Guide to Grandparenting by Allan Zullo,Kathryn Zullo Pdf

"We are your typical boomer nana and papa," say authors Kathryn and Allan Zullo, "younger, healthier, wealthier, and better educated than our grandparents. We are more active and less formal than our own parents were at our age. We no longer fit the traditional image of our elderly kin." That description signals the need for a new kind of grandparenting, a role that The Nanas and the Papas fills to perfection. This completely reworked and updated version is now half again as large as the original. "Most boomer grandparents work hard and lead vigorous, often stressful, lives where time is a precious commodity," say the Zullos. The Nanas and the Papas helps grandparents relieve the stress of grandparenting and make the most of limited time.Top grandparenting experts cited throughout the book tailor their guidance and recommendations to fit the boomer sensibility, covering topics such as:o How to define the grandparenting role for a new generationo The latest trends in child careo How to work in harmony with your children and their spouseso High-tech grandparentingo Ways to make the most of time alone with grandchildreno Grandparenting and the single-parent householdo Grandparents caring for their own parentsFilled with expert advice, The Nanas and the Papas provides a smooth transition into grandparenting and sets the stage for successful relationships and experiences for the entire family.

Consuming Books by Stephen Brown Pdf

The buying, selling, and writing of books is a colossal industry in which marketing looms large, yet there are very few books which deal with book marketing (how-to texts excepted) and fewer still on book consumption. This innovative text not only rectifies this, but also argues that far from being detached, the book business in fact epitomises today’s Entertainment Economy (fast moving, hit driven, intense competition, rapid technological change, etc.). Written by an impressive roster of renowned marketing authorities, many with experience of the book trade and all gifted writers in their own right, Consuming Books steps back from the practicalities of book marketing and takes a look at the industry from a broader consumer research perspective. Consisting of sixteen chapters, divided into four loose sections, this key text covers: * a historical overview * the often acrimonious marketing/literature interface * the consumers of books (from book groups to bookcrossing) * a consideration of the tensions that both literary types and marketers feel. With something for everyone, Consuming Books not only complements the ‘how-to’ genre but provides the depth that previous studies of book consumption conspicuously lack.

Too Close for Comfort? by Linda Perlman Gordon,Susan Shaffer Pdf

A fascinating look at how mothers and their adult daughters have formed a greater friendship than generations past?and whether or not their should be boundaries. No relationship is more complicated than the one between mothers and daughters? especially today, when a cultural shift can cause a longer period of time of overlapping interests before the traditional adult markers of marriage and family. As a result, these young women are developing deeper bonds with their own mothers, a relationship that sometimes mimics friendship. But are these close bonds healthy? Is it time to cut the umbilical cord? In this eye-opening book, Linda Perlman Gordon and Susan Morris Shaffer explore the modern mother-daughter relationship in all its glorious complexity. Combining a brilliant sociological analysis with fascinating stories of real- life women, Too Close for Comfort? provides a rich, provocative look at the ways mothers and daughters get it right, how they get it wrong?and how they can happily maintain being friends as well as mothers and daughters.

Intentional Grandparenting by Peggy Edwards Pdf

Grandparenting is one of the greatest joys in life. Most “grandboomers” are young, active, and anxious to be involved in the lives of their grandchildren. However, grandparenting in the twenty-first century is often complicated by long distances, family breakups, and remarriage. Based on solid evidence from the experts combined with inspirational – and sometimes funny – real-life stories from grandparents, parents, and grandchildren, Intentional Grandparenting provides readers with ten child-centred principles to guide their decision-making as modern grandparents. At the heart this approach is the notion of intentional grandparenting, a process for planning ahead and taking deliberate action to be the kind of grandparent you want to be. The authors identify the challenges and offer practical, parent-friendly advice to help boomers become happy and effective grandparents. Written in an accessible and engaging style, Intentional Grandparenting is at once entertaining and informative.

Now You See Me by Kathy Sanders Pdf

On April 19, 1995, Kathy Sanders' life was changed forever when a bomb exploded and destroyed the Alfred P. Murrah building in Oklahoma City, killing her two grandsons Chase and Colton. For months, Kathy struggled with coping and wondered if the God she'd worshipped all her life even existed. After battling bitterness and contemplating suicide, she turned to the Lord and asked what He'd have her do. The answer was clear: Forgive your enemies. Thus Kathy forged a friendship with Terry Nichols, one of the men convicted in the bombing, via phone conversations, letters, and even face-to-face meetings. She also began searching for answers about what happened that fateful day in April and found opportunities to cultivate relationships with Nichols' children, mother, sister, wife, and ex-wife in separate turns. She demonstrated the same type of warmth to family members of Timothy McVeigh, the second man convicted of orchestrating the bombing. Her courageous efforts of extending compassion and grace gave her peace and removed the bitterness from her life. With photos, interviews, and actual letters exchanged between Kathy and Terry Nichols, NOW YOU SEE ME tells the story of one woman who walked the road less traveled and forgave the unforgivable.

The Nanas and the Papas by Kathryn Zullo,Allan Zullo Pdf

When Kathryn and Allan Zullo learned they were going to be grandparents, they were thrilled. The next emotion the two fortysomething felt was panic. "What do we really know about being grandparents?" they tought. "We're nothing like our gray-haired grandmas and grandpas." To answer their questions--and those of a new generation of grandparents--they created The Nanas and the Papas. They went to leading experts in child care and grandparenting, including T. Berry Brazelton, Arthur Kornhaber, and Perry Buffington, all of whom generously shared their views on the issues confronting boomer grandparents. Then they talked to other boomer nanas and papas, from friends next door to Internet acquaintances across the country.

Caroline and Papa by Ronald B. Schram Pdf

I had the career of a lifetime. I was a teacher. I began my teaching career believing that one person could make a difference, and throughout the years, I never lost sight of that conviction. Teaching connected me to my students in ways quite humorous, as well as heart breaking. I hope the reader laughs a lot and cries only a little, while walking in my footsteps as an educator. Laugh with me as you read about Fred, the crusty cockroach we set free to find his wife and eighty-seven children. In addition, there is always my favorite story about the scary monster under the bed holding a student's homework hostage. I fed a rooster and his hens bread crumbs for breakfast each morning, until they tried to follow me, in single file, into the school board building one day. Some difficult students in summer school mistakenly believed my black patent leather belt to be a black belt in Karate. Who was I to tell them differently? Coming right on top of the laughs were the times I went home to cry. I remember the student, new to our school, who went home one evening and hung himself, his cries for help coming too late. I remember with equal sadness, the foster child we sponsored in Kenya who died because help did not reach him in time. Closer to home was the overage student who was shot and killed while he participated in a home invasion, just days after he finished summer school. Outside factors reached inside our classroom as well, reeking havoc with the emotions of both the children and me. The disastrous space shuttle, with the teacher on board, happened before our very eyes; while the greatest tragedy of all was the destruction of the twin towers on 9/11. These stories and many more comprise my educational career, and although there was no easy button, I would do it all over again. I was a teacher.
