Russian Wars with Turkey (Classic Reprint) by Major Frank S. Russell Pdf
Excerpt from Russian Wars With Turkey Man of the South.' The Eastern question will still be unanswered, and there will still be a dormant volcano which one day will convulse Europe. Ever since the year 1453, when the Turks conquered Constantinople, it may be said that they have been in almost a chronic state of dissension or war with their Christian neighbours. Up to 1683, when Mahomet the Fourth besieged Vienna, the tide of their conquest was advancing; since then it has been slowly but certainly receding. On three successive occasions their naval power has been destroyed by the combined fleets of other nations, and twice has England participated in this de struction. In 1571, at Lepanto, the fleets of Spain, Genoa, Malta, Venice, and Pius V., combined to destroy their navy; again in 1770 they were defeated by the fleet of Russia aided by Englishmen, in the passage of Scio; once more, fifty-seven years later, in 1827, at N avarino the Turkish navy was annihilated by the united fleets of England, Russia, and France. The Turks have not un frequently been called our ancient allies; it will be found on referring to history that they might with greater truth be called 'our ancient enemies, ' as up to 1840 we were nearly always allied against them. The Russo-Turkish War (Classic Reprint) by R. Grant Barnwell Pdf
Excerpt from The Russo-Turkish War The eyes of thinking people are now turned to the great struggle in Eastern Europe for the supremacy of the Bosphorus, and to the effort of the Slavonic races of the Danube to throw off the Turkish yoke. The desire of the Russians to possess themselves of Constantinople is as old as the nation itself. It has its origin, not in political ambition only, but in a determination to rescue from infidel bondage their brothers of the Slavonic race and of the Orthodox Church. The posi tion of the Russian Christians under the Tartar domination was very like the present position of the Christians in Turkey. For some time after the conquest, Russia was ruled as Bulgaria is now; then she obtained her rights and powers similar to those of Servia and Rou mania at the present day; and ultimately she gained complete inde pendence. Thus the Russians long formed the vanguard in the cause of Slavonic emancipation. They were the first of the Slavonic people to fall under the Tartar yoke, and the first to emancipate themselves. This they have not forgotten; and we cannot wonder that they should now sympathize with those kindred races which are striving to follow their example. The Story of Russia by R. Van Bergen Pdf
When we think of our country, we feel proud of it for other and better reasons than its great size. We know how its extent compares with that of other nations; we know that the United States covers an area almost equal to that of Europe, and, more favored than that Grand Division, is situated on the two great highways of commerce, the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Europe is as far from the latter, as Asia is from the former; and these highways, powerful means toward creating prosperity, remain at the same time barriers whereby nations that find greater delight in the arts of war than in those of peace, are restrained from disturbing our national progress. At the beginning of this twentieth century the nations upon which depends the world's peace or war, happiness or misfortune, are the United States, Great Britain, Germany, France, Austria-Hungary, Italy, Russia, Japan, and in the near future China. Here we see that Europe, although little larger in area than the United States, is represented by seven nations, Asia by two, and the Western Hemisphere by one which by its institutions stands for peace and progress, for law and order. Hence we, its citizens, are known all over the world as Americans.

Russia and Turkey in the Nineteenth Century (Classic Reprint) by Elizabeth Wormeley Latimer Pdf
Excerpt from Russia and Turkey in the Nineteenth Century The kingdom of Novgorod was overturned by invading Tartars, and little more was heard in Europe Of Muscovy until in the sixteenth century, when Captain Sir Richard Chancelor, seeking the Northeastern Passage, wandered into the White Sea, and was thence conducted to the bar baric court of Ivan the Terrible. That formidable monarch received Chancelor at Moscow, seated on a very royal throne, having upon his head a diadem of gold his robe was all of goldsmith's work, in his hand he bore a crystal sceptre, garnished and beset with precious stones, and his countenance was no less full of majesty. Upon one side of his throne stood his chief scrivener, and upon the other the great commander of Silence, or court usher, in costly dresses of cloth of gold. Around the chamber were seated his council of one hundred and fifty noblemen, upon high seats, all clad as richly.
