Overall, airfares have decreased and service has improved since the dereg. of the airline industry in 1978. Contributing to this trend has been the increased competition spurred by the entry of new airlines into the industry, and established airlines into new markets. A number of airports in the Southeast and upper Midwest have not experienced such entry and therefore have not experienced lower fares and improved service. This report determines if barriers still exist that prevent airlines from serving new markets and how these barriers have affected airfares and service.
