The New Birth of Ireland (Classic Reprint) by Louis G. Redmond-Howard Pdf

Excerpt from The New Birth of Ireland Mr Balfour once observed that the Irish Question had almost become synonymous with English polities. He was not far wrong, for it is perfectly true that for close upon a century the Nationalist party has dominated with local grievances the whole course of Imperial policy. Nevertheless the Irish Question is not, intrinsically, a party question at all, nor indeed should it ever have been allowed to become one. It shall therefore be the primary intention of this volume to analyse the situation down to those constituent elements into which it must eventually resolve itself before its anomalous factors can be discussed; polities proper will be introduced only when they become absolutely essential to a right understanding of the tangle into which they have thrown economic controversies. The New Ireland (Classic Reprint) by Sydney Brooks Pdf

Excerpt from The New Ireland I spent a couple of months in Ireland in the autumn of 1906. It was the first time I had visited the country. Both these facts are probably apparent enough in the chapters that follow, but I state them here, thus nakedly, partly as an excuse, and partly as an explanation. The substance of this book appeared originally in the form of a series of twelve articles that I contributed to the Daily Mail during December, 1906, and January, 1907. By the courtesy of the editor I have been permitted to reproduce them, with such changes and amplifications - neither few nor inconsiderable - as I have thought fit to make. A similar indulgence has been shown to me by the editor of the Morning Post in regard to two articles, one on the Gaelic League and the other on the I. A. O. S., that were first published in his columns. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. New Ireland, Vol. 1 of 2 (Classic Reprint) by A. M. Sullivan Pdf

Excerpt from New Ireland, Vol. 1 of 2 Within considerably less than half a century, changes, social and political, accomplishing a veritable revolution, have taken place in Ireland. In the following pages I have undertaken, not so much to picture them in all their phases, or to write a formal history of the period, as to supply, chiefly from personal observation, a series of sketches or narratives which may zperhaps assist in the readier and more Correct appreciation of visible results. On Some Antiquities in the Neighbourhood of Dunecht House Aberdeenshire (Classic Reprint) by George Forrest Browne Pdf

Excerpt from On Some Antiquities in the Neighbourhood of Dunecht House Aberdeenshire It was known to the archaeologist that there were ogam inscriptions in the district, two Of them being among the most important in Caledonia; and that within an easy motor drive there was a minuscule inscription of six lines Of which no satisfactory explanation had been given. This inscription they had visited in a previous year. Further, the quick eye Of the hostess of Dunecht had caught sight of some curious sculptures on a stone by the road-side on the way to the minus cule inscription; and other like stones in the neighbourhood had been shewn in Stuart's two volumes of Sculptural Stones of Scotland. The suggestion was then made that for the sake of visitors at Dunecht a sort Of guide book should be prepared, giving some simple description of the several Objects and their meaning and uses. A Short History of Ireland (Classic Reprint) by Constantia Maxwell Pdf

Excerpt from A Short History of Ireland MY endeavour in writing this little book has been to present a clear and impartial account of the chief features of Irish' History. In view of the notable gaps which exist in the scientific treatment of social and economic questions, I have purposely dealt mainly with political events. I have also intentionally neglected the important subjects of Celtic mythology and literature, as being beyond the scope of an elementary historical text book. A work of this kind is necessarily based upon secondary sources I have, therefore, appended a short list of those authorities to which I am indebted. Young Ireland by Charles Gavan Duffy Pdf

Excerpt from Young Ireland: A Fragment of Irish History, 1840-1850 I have written this book in the intervals of a busy life, because I believed it was the best and last service I could render to Ireland. It contains a memoir of the public affairs of that country during a period of abnormal political activity a period to which may be traced, as to their fountain-head, many of the Opinions now universally current among the Irish people. My first aim was to make a new generation familiar with the truthfulness, simplicity, and real moderation of the men with whom, it was said, a new soul came into Ireland. The Young Ireland party, as their enemies in the first instance named them, and as they came in the end to name themselves, after having been long misrepresented, have in latter times been vindicated and. Applauded more than enough, but they have never I think been understood. What they aimed to do, and what they accomplished; their actual motives and their means of action, as disclosed in their private correspondence, and interpreted by one who shared their counsels, are set down in this book for the first time and will be found I think worthy of study by statesmen and publicists accustomed to meditate on the afiairs of Ireland. The Patriot's History of Ireland (Classic Reprint) by Mary Francis Cusack Pdf

Excerpt from The Patriot's History of Ireland I Have been asked to write a short, concise History of Ireland for the benefit of those who have not time to read a larger work, and for the use of schools, as an Introduction to Irish History. I have complied with this request; but the reader should remember that it requires some care and thought to understand a history written with care and thought, and that, while "stories" about Ireland may amuse, and rudely-written rhymes may excite, it requires something higher, something of which Irishmen are specially capable, to enable them to like and to profit by what requires some study. This History is intended for thoughtful men and women, as well as for thoughtful boys and girls. It contains the result of many years' careful and anxious study, given to the reader in the form in which, as I hope, it will be most easily understood and remembered. It is not intended to take the place of a larger History, nor is it intended for the senior classes in colleges; for such use a larger work, containing more general information, given in the form best suited for students, is now ready. Lincolnshire (Classic Reprint) by Edward Mansel Sympson Pdf

Excerpt from Lincolnshire The word county is derived from an old French word meaning a province governed by a count (french), or an earl (saxon) as he was afterwards termed, and it is applied generally to all the provinces in England, parti cularly to those which had been separate kingdoms in anglo-saxon times, like Kent. The Secret of Progress (Classic Reprint) by W. Cunningham Pdf

Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. History of Ireland (Classic Reprint) by Thomas Wright Pdf

Excerpt from History of Ireland These two gentlemen proceeded to fulfil their mission, but their expostulations pro duced no effect, and they found that the only effect of their arrival was immediately to turn all thoughts upon Wexford, where it was determined to proceed without delay. Fitzgerald, willingly or by constraint, re mained with the insurgents, and marched with them that evening to a new encamp ment at the Three Rocks, not more than two miles and-a-half from Wexford. Three Rocks is the termination of a long but not high ridge of hills, called the Mountain of Forth, separating the baronies of Bargy and Forth from the rest of the county. Col clough returned direct to Wexford, where he arrived early in the evening, and having waited in the Bull-ring till the officers and other gentlemen in the town had assembled, he gave them an account of his proceedings, and announced that it was the intention of the rebels to attack the town. He then called on Mr. Harvey at the jail, with whom he agreed to return next day and change places with him, after which he set off through the barony of Forth to his own dwelling at Ballyleigh, which was about ten miles distant from Wexford.
