Globalization and Economic Development by Servaas Storm,C. W. M. Naastepad Pdf

Seventeen international specialists contribute 16 essays to this text honoring Dutch researcher, educator, and policy-maker, George Waardenburg. Focusing on developing countries, this text analyzes globalization from a range of perspectives. It challenges the mainstream view that globalization ensures efficiency and growth and provides equity and development for participating countries. Coverage includes the effects of the neo-liberal (Washington Consensus) policies on growth and stability in developing countries; developments in international capital flows and their implications for economic policy and policy autonomy; and the effects of globalization on income distribution, employment, and significant social indicators within developing countries and on the environment. c. North-South and South-South by F. Stewart Pdf

'...an important and timely contribution to the study of South-South economic relations. It provides a cogent and detailed analysis...'-Henock Kifle, South Letter '...provides some interesting insights into the determinants and consequences of South-South trade.'- Frances Stewart, The World Economy 'This comprehensive, incisive work....represents both historical depth and topical breadth. ....This well-written analysis makes an important contribution to development studies, including development economics and development geography.'- Georges G. Cravins, The Journal of Asian Studies These essays explore interactions between North and South and South and South in trade, technology and finance, focusing on the interests of the South, and particularly the poor. The 'conventional' neo-classical approach is shown to have many theoretical deficiences, the consequences are often harmful to Southern interests, while the poor are neglected. The author concludes that the South should adopt a bargaining approach to N-S negotiations and urges for closer South-South relations in trade, technology and finance.

Global Economics in Extraordinary Times by C. Fred Bergsten,C. Randall Henning Pdf

Over five decades, John Williamson has written across an extraordinarily broad set of topics in international economics ranging from international monetary economics to development policy. The arc of his scholarship follows the main preoccupations of international economists during the second half of the 20th century and the first decade of the 21st. Bridging the scholarly literature and policy debates, his publications on the Washington Consensus, exchange rate policy, and international monetary reform have profoundly influenced public discourse, government policy, and the evolution of the economics discipline. As John marked his 75th birthday, his friends and colleagues prepared this collection of essays to celebrate these many contributions and reflect on their relevance to the challenges that confront the world economy in the wake of the 2008 09 global financial crisis and its current aftermath in Europe.

North-South Globalization and Foreign Direct Investment by Jakob Schwab Pdf

Jakob Schwab analyzes central mechanisms in the systematic economic interaction between rich and poor countries. He focuses on the drivers and effects of investment in developing countries and shows that predictions of standard economic analysis may turn around when accounting for peculiarities of North-South globalization. The author shows how endowments with educational skill levels may lead to complementarity between trade and capital inflows, how inflows of direct investment capital may hinder income growth in poor countries, and how the distributional effects of the presence of multinational enterprises are perceived differently in countries of different development structures.

International Handbook of Development Economics by Amitava Krishna Dutt,Jaime Ros Pdf

The essays are concise, yet comprehensive, and each essay contains a substantial set of references, which an interested researcher or student could follow up. . . In addition to representing multidisciplinary interactions, this collection encompasses several different perspectives within development economics, so the reader can learn, for example, both about neoclassical approaches and dependency theories in the same volume. This makes the collection unique and all the more valuable. . . This is a very good reference collection, as the individual essays are informative and provide a good overall perspective on the topic that they set out to address. The extensive bibliography at the end of each essay adds further value to this collection. Ashwini Deshpande, Economic and Political Weekly These new volumes impress along two dimensions. First, they highlight important connections between economic development and variables such as culture, warfare, and ethnicity, which are sometimes ignored by mainstream economists. Second, they analyze the economic development experience of different regions such as Africa, Latin America, and East Asia. . . a valuable reference for scholars and practitioners in the field. Highly recommended. H.A. Faruq, Choice This two-volume original reference work provides a comprehensive overview of development economics and comprises contributions by some of the leading scholars working in the field. Authors are drawn from around the world and write on a wide range of topics. After providing an introduction to the subject (by examining issues like the meaning and measurement of development, historical and interdisciplinary approaches, empirical regularities and data problems), the contributors provide a wealth of perspectives on, and analyses of, development economics. They discuss alternative approaches to development, the macroeconomics of growth, factors and sources of economic development (such as capital, labor, entrepreneurship, resources and technology), major sectors of concern (such as agriculture, industry, services and the informal sector) and international issues (such as trade, capital and labor flows and technology transfers). Income distribution and poverty, the state and other institutions, and actual development experiences are explored. The contributors provide analytical contributions, as well as the relation between these contributions and real world and policy issues from a variety of alternative perspectives. Scholars, students, policymakers and other development practitioners will all find this comprehensive reference invaluable.

International Economic Law, Globalization and Developing Countries by Julio Faundez,Celine Tan Pdf

This book is both breathtaking in its scope and impressive in its attention to legal and institutional detail in situating developing countries in the evolving body of international economic law. Essays in this volume canvas most important areas of international economic law, including international trade law, international financial regulation, the regulation of foreign direct investment and multinational corporations, foreign aid, the enforcement of human rights standards and core international labour standards on multinational corporations, international enforcement of anti-corruption conventions, international competition law, international intellectual property rights, and international environmental law. A pervasive theme, compellingly developed, in most of these papers is the asymmetric structure of international institutions that generate rules in these various areas, in which developing countries are mostly rule takers, rather than equal participants. The current global financial crisis may provide a welcome opportunity for re-evaluating these institutional asymmetries. In any such re-evaluation, this book will provide a veritable cornucopia of constructive new insights.

New Ways of Economic Development in the Third World Countries by Nawshirwan Rashid Pdf

Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Development Politics, , language: English, abstract: The 21st century has brought drastic changes into the entire international society. Over the last several years there were a lot of changes in the world that directly or implicitly had a great impact on the international economy. Recent financial recession, constant and fast globalization, technological revolution, and frequent development of the less-industrialized countries are only several alterations experienced by the international economic system. It is rather clear today that old schemes and structures soon enough will not meet the requirements of the modern world. The balance of power in the world is changing rather fast and at the same time, despite the knowledge people obtain today, there are still such constructs as poverty and starvation. The financial and economic downturn of 2007-2008 revealed that the international economic system is extremely vulnerable, but when a great amount of effort was implemented in prevention of the similar situation in the wealthy nations, little was done to research the impact of economic downturn on the poor nations. It is possible to argue that the frameworks existing today have to be changed in order to meet the requirements of the current system. At this point, it has to be noted that for the last several years the economic development of such counties as South Korea, China, and India has become one of the most vivid illustrations that it is possible to change the situation by introducing proper policies. While there are several examples demonstrating that fast and effective industrialization is not a myth, it is also impossible not to notice the countries that have shortage of the most necessary commodities as clean water and food. Lack of resources, armed conflicts, absence of proper legislation, and faulty governance are the most wide-spread reasons for the extreme poverty. At the same time, blaming internal factors only is not quite right in this situation. Development of international organizations and especially international blocs, like European Union (EU) countries, or World Trade Organization (WTO) members, that changed the architecture of international trading system, influenced on the ability to compete in the market where the poor counties do not stand a chance. At this point, it is possible to notice that the alterations like technical advancement increased the opportunities in the wealthy counties presenting them more possibilities to grow. [...]
