The Origin of the New Testament (Classic Reprint) by William Wrede Pdf

Excerpt from The Origin of the New Testament The present brief and crisp treatise on The Origin of the New Testament was originally delivered by the late Professor Wrede to an educated audience of lay folk in the form of lectures. The reader will not fail to perceive marks of this in the direct personal style of address throughout. A certain melancholy interest attaches to it as a posthumous publication. It is among the literary remains of the late Professor William Wrede, published by his brother with the assistance of a friend of the deceased theologian. The present work is intended for, and suited to, a much wider circle of readers than more elaborate and technical works. The First Three Gospels by J. Estlin Carpenter Pdf

Excerpt from The First Three Gospels: Their Origin and Relations This little book is an attempt to set before the ordinary English reader some of the results of recent study of the First Three Gospels. A few years ago I endeavoured to draw up a brief account of the general social and religious conditions amid which Jesus lived and taught. It was my hope then that se in Palestine might be speedily followed by a short and simple Commentary on the Gospel according to S. Luke. But the preparation of a series of Notes on that Gospel for the use of parents and teachers, l convinced me that no commentary could be really useful or intelligible until the way had been made ready by a previous exposition of the modes of thought and feeling which helped to Shape the Gospel narratives. The following pages are intended to set forth some of these ideas, and describe the growth of the documents in which they were finally embodied. The Origins of Christianity and the New Testament by Rebecca I. Denova Pdf

In The Origins of Christianity and the New Testament, distinguished scholar Rebecca I. Denova explores how the first followers of Jesus arrived at their faith, the way their sacred texts developed into the New Testament, and how their movement eventually became the religion of Christianity. This accessible volume examines the concepts, beliefs, issues, and events that gave rise to institutional Christianity—providing readers with the historical context of the gospels of Mark, Matthew, Luke, and John, the Acts of the Apostles, the Book of Revelation, the letters of Paul, and other foundational New Testament documents. Approaching the subject from the multidisciplinary perspective of Religious Studies, the author addresses topics including the ethnic and religious background of “Jesus the Jew,” the New Testament’s different portraits of Jesus, the genesis of Christian concepts such as the divine incarnation and “second coming” of Jesus, Paul the Apostle’s contributions to Christian dogma, how ancient Judaism, Greco-Roman culture, and early philosophy was incorporated into the Christian tradition, and more. Containing maps, timelines, figures of archaeological sites, a brief history of ancient Judaism, and a wealth of pedagogical features, The Origins of Christianity and the New Testament is an excellent textbook for all undergraduate and graduate courses in the study of ancient Christianity, as well as lay readers with interest in tracing the roots of the Christian faith.

New Testament History (Classic Reprint) by G. W. Wade Pdf

Excerpt from New Testament History The present work is intended to be a companion volume to my Old Testament History (first published in 1901). But the shorter period needing to be covered, and the greater importance of the subject have rendered both possible and desirable a difference in the manner of treatment; and of the three parts into which the book is divided two are devoted to introductory matter. The first of these embraces a description of Palestine in New Testament times; an historic sketch of the causes producing the political and religious conditions of that country at the beginning of the first century A.D.; some account of the external circumstances, Roman and Jewish, obtaining in the same period; and a short review of the literary tradition inherited by the Now Testament writers. The second, besides describing the principal MSS. and Versions of the New Testament and the methods of textual criticism, comprises a detailed investigation of the historical value of the separate New Testament books. In order, however, to preclude misapprehension, it is necessary to qualify what has just been said by adding that the sketch of Jewish history is restricted to such matters as explain the circumstances mentioned or implied in the New Testament, and that the inquiry into the origin and authority of the New Testament writings does not extend to those of the Pauline Epistles which are sufficiently widely recognized to be genuine for their composition by St. Paul to be here taken for granted. The third and principal part of the volume contains a narrative of our Lord's ministry, based on the earliest sources; an account of the Christian Church during the period included in the Book of Acts; and an attempt to trace the development of theological thought in successive groups of New Testament documents. Outlines of New Testament History (Classic Reprint) by Francis Ernest Gigot Pdf

Excerpt from Outlines of New Testament History The present is a companion volume to the Outlines of Jewish History published some months ago. It deals with the historical data supplied by the inspired writings of the New Testament, in exactly the same manner as the pre ceding work did with the various events recorded in the sacred books of the Old Testament. In both volumes the writer has pursued the same purpose and followed the same methods. Both works have been prepared for the special use of theological students, not, however, without the hope that they may prove serviceable to a much larger number of readers, such as teachers of Bible history in Sunday-schools, colleges, academies, and the like. In neither volume has it been the aim of the writer to supply a substitute for the Bible itself, but rather a help towards a more careful perusal of the inspired record. With this purpose in view, he has set forth such results of modern investigation as may render the sacred narrative more intelligible and attractive. Many of the difficulties which are daily being raised on historical grounds are also touched upon, and the biblical student is supplied with constant references to further sources of in formation. Pillars in the History of Biblical Interpretation, Volume 3 by Stanley E. Porter,Zachary K. Dawson Pdf

This third volume, like its predecessors, adds to the growing body of literature concerned with the history of biblical interpretation. With eighteen essays on nineteen biblical interpreters, volume 3 expands the scope of scholars, both traditional and modern, covered in this now multivolume series. Each chapter provides a biographical sketch of its respective scholar(s), an overview of their major contributions to the field, explanations of their theoretical and methodological approaches to interpretation, and evaluations and applications of their methods. By focusing on the contexts in which these scholars lived and worked, these essays show what defining features qualify these scholars as "pillars" in the history of biblical interpretation. While identifying a scholar as a "pillar" is somewhat subjective, this volume defines a pillar as one who has made a distinctive contribution by using and exemplifying a clear method that has pushed the discipline forward, at least within a given context and time period. This volume is ideal for any class on the history of biblical interpretation and for those who want a greater understanding of how the field of biblical studies has developed and how certain interpreters have played a formative role in that development.
