Change and the New International Economic Order by J.A. van Lith Pdf

In the academic year 1977-1978 Tilburg University celebrated its fiftieth anniversary. The commemoration involved specific scientific activities. The theme of 'Innovation', broadly de fined as 'developments in sciences and society', offered the scientific framework in which these activities took olace. The present volume is one of the results. It consists of the texts of a series of lectures held at the Department of Eco nomics of Tilburg University. The Department's Colloquium Committee, set up to organize discussions on current research, arranged the lectures. On this occasion, the committee decided to draw attention to the multidisciplinary character of re search in the area of NIEO, the New International Economic Or der. The collection of papers that eventually resulted is published in this volume. - Gratitude is owed to the people, thanks to whom this volume could be published: to Mr. Ad Janssen, head of the Office of the Department of Economics for offering the secretarial fa cilities needed to 'process' the book, despite an understaffed office already facing excessive work; to the 'Fifty Years Til burg University' Committee for creating the financial ways and means; to Mr. Jan Vingerhoets of the Development Research In stitute of Tilburg University for his most valuable advice and help; to Mr. McGivern who gave the book its final form in Eng lish. Thanks also are due to Mr. Hans Sinner, responsible for Tilburg University Press; to Mr. van Vloten, publisher, Marti nus Nijhoff, and to Mrs. Hinkenkemper, Miss Annelies Vugs and Dr. George Embree.

The factors influencing such positions are analyzed, namely, economic factors on the one hand, and social, political, and cultural factors on the other. This volume is comprised of seven chapters and begins with a brief sketch of Western Europe, followed by a discussion on Western Europe's reaction to four NIEO issues: the adjustment policies necessary to establish the NIEO; the Law of the Sea; the integrated approach to commodities; and official development assistance (ODA) transfers. The following chapters focus on the implications of the NIEO for Western European economy, social services, income redistribution, and social movements; the policies of Scandinavia and the so-called ""like-minded"" countries toward developing countries and the NIEO; and institutional and political factors for and against the NIEO in Western Europe. The Challenge Of The New International Economic Order by Edwin P Reubens Pdf

This volume deals with the recent proposals in the United Nations and elsewhere for reconstructing the existing economic relations between less developed and more developed countries. The contributors to the book undertake to clarify the NIEO proposals, asking specifically to what extent they are really new, fully international, realistically economic, and are the constituents of workable order. The confrontation of NIEO demands and real-world constraints is a leading feature of the book, and each of the chapters deals with one or more elements of the NIEO proposals against the background of relevant conditions in both the countries and the international institutions and practices that interrelate them. The authors arrive at a considerable degree of consensus, mostly agreeing that the NIEO is not really a new order, but endorsing specific NIEO proposals that will achieve gradual progress for LDCs in absolute terms.

Caribbean Labor and Politics by Perry Mars,Alma H. Young Pdf

Having more in common than their deaths on the same day in 1997, the late Cheddi Jagan of Guyana and Michael Manley of Jamaica both represented a radical perspective in modern Caribbean politics. Jagan and Manley each had a bold and creative ability to connect labor and politics and made it their priority to minimize poverty and inequality and to enhance the welfare of the Caribbean's disadvantaged and dispossessed. Caribbean Labor and Politics looks closely at the legacies of Jagan and Manley and their ramifications for the political and economic struggles of the Caribbean region and the world. This edited volume brings together a variety of studies on the lives, works, and intellectual and practical contributions of these two stalwart political leaders. The chapters focus primarily on Jagan's and Manley's years as heads of state of their respective countries and also encapsulate their pre-political years-mainly their growing-up experiences and their organizational work in the labor movement. The core contributions of these men are characterized in terms of their pivotal struggles towards the realization of what we term the "working class project."
