The Nigerian Healthcare System by Joseph Abiodun Balogun Pdf

The modern-day practice of health care was imported into Nigeria over 500 years ago. In 1947, the first national health plan was developed in Nigeria with the primary goal of providing universal health care (UHC), but this goal remains elusive to date. This comprehensive book presents the roadmap needed to attain UHC in Nigeria and offers a blueprint for achieving high-quality health care in the nation. Starting with a brief overview of the Nigerian state, the fundamentals of health care, including the challenges to affordable quality healthcare delivery, the author critically examines the healthcare system in Nigeria and offers specific recommendations to invigorate the system and improve interprofessional collaborations. Each chapter includes case studies to allow readers to contextualize the information presented and behavioral learning objectives to test readers' knowledge. Among the topics covered: The Organizational Structure and Leadership of the Nigerian Healthcare System The Vulnerabilities of the Nigerian Healthcare System The Spectrum of Complementary and Alternative Medicine Emerging Developments in Traditional Medicine Practice in Nigeria The Plight of Persons Living with Disabilities: The Visible Invisibles in Nigeria A Comparative Analysis of the Health System of Nigeria and Six Selected Nations Around the World A Qualitative Investigation of the Barriers to the Delivery of High-Quality Healthcare Services in Nigeria The Political and Economic Reforms Needed to Achieve Universal and High-Quality Health Care in Nigeria Reimagining the Nigerian Healthcare System to Achieve Universal and High-Quality Health Care by 2030 The Nigerian Healthcare System: Pathway to Universal and High-Quality Health Care is ideal for adoption as a textbook in health services administration, health policy and management, health informatics, healthcare delivery systems, and primary health care courses offered at universities in Nigeria. It also would appeal to students and faculty in African diaspora programs internationally. The book is also essential for policymakers, health systems technocrats, researchers, and professionals in various health disciplines, including medicine, nursing, and allied health.

Primary Healthcare in Nigeria by Raymond O. Chimezie Frsph Pdf

Primary Healthcare in Nigeria: Overview, Challenges, and Prospects is a well-intended effort to explore the current health system in Nigeria in the context of the 21st Century. It provides a historical background to the Nigerian healthcare system, identifies the major challenges, and provides rich information on how to improve the health care system in Nigeria. It brings into focus Nigeria's struggle to improve primary healthcare delivery and how those efforts have not improved the peoples' health in Nigeria. It also explains how the lack of effective primary healthcare delivery system promotes medical tourism and causes loss of national revenue to foreign health care systems. This book clearly identifies basic challenges affecting healthcare delivery such as poor infrastructure, underfunding, lack of research and community involvement, inadequate labor force management and development, lack of true leadership and accountability in public office, poor health promotion and education strategies, and a fragile public-private sector partnership in healthcare delivery. Primary Healthcare in Nigeria draws examples from other countries which have improved their health systems to show that the solutions to Nigeria's healthcare problems rest in the hands of leadership committed to the nation's good and wellness. Primary Healthcare in Nigeria: Overview, Challenges, and Prospects is intended to give public health students a clearer perspective about Nigeria's health system and how it impacts peoples' lifespan, wellness, and national development. It is also a good resource for public health professionals to understand and embrace the global view of public health, and then challenges them to work toward a better healthcare delivery system. This book is organized in chapters and focuses essentially on: The historical origin of Nigeria's healthcare system Meaning of a healthcare system The Concept of Access to Health care Challenges and prospects of the primary he

Conflict Management and Team Development in the Healthcare Sector. Healthcare System in Nigeria by Akinmayowa Adedoyin Shobo Pdf

Academic Paper from the year 2021 in the subject Health - Health system, grade: A2, Obafemi Awolowo University, language: English, abstract: This paper spotlights several empirical thoughts on team development and conflict management in relation to the Nigerian healthcare setting. The subject of conflict is gaining more interest among stakeholders in all spheres of life. There’s been various perspectives owing to the roles often played by conflicts at the national and international levels. The focus of this work; however, is limited to conflicts within an organization – specifically the healthcare organization in Nigeria. Team development has been studied and characterized by organizational theorists and administrators as it concerns organizational performance. In the healthcare setting, maintaining highly functional teams has been advocated for many reasons including (a) the prevention of avoidable adverse events partly due to inadequacy of communication channels among clinicians. (b) The avoidance of unnecessary waste and cost due to a lack of clarity in purpose. (c) Decreasing the risk of medical errors as a result of the incompetence among the team of healthcare professionals. In the Nigerian context, experts have also identified some barriers to effective team development. The Nigerian healthcare sector has perennially suffered from the outcomes of conflicts among various stakeholders that make up the overall healthcare system. In view of these negative consequences of such conflicts (for example industrial action leading to termination of healthcare services every year); there’s been a rise in the phenomenon of medical tourism among certain privileged segments of the Nigerian society, leaving the majority of the population vulnerable.

Contemporary Obstetrics and Gynecology for Developing Countries by Friday Okonofua,Joseph A. Balogun,Kunle Odunsi,Victor N. Chilaka Pdf

This book is a comprehensive and easy-to-read guide to obstetrics and gynecology in developing countries. Although significant progress has been made towards the reduction of maternal mortality and morbidity globally, they are still unacceptably high in developing countries. This can be directly or indirectly tied to poor quality maternal health care and lack of access to cost-effective, comprehensive healthcare. Health practitioners in developing countries also contend with trying to keep abreast of recent developments in obstetrics and gynecology while dealing with lack of time, resources, and access to relevant information. This textbook was thus created by experts in obstetrics and gynecology with extensive experience in African clinical settings and consultants in developed countries to teach proper and accurate diagnosis, treatment and management of gynecologic and obstetric health issues within the context of developing countries. This second edition has been fully updated throughout with an added 25+ chapters that cover topics such as reproductive health, gynecological cancers and research methods. The book is divided into six sections: Women’s Reproductive Health; Obstetrics; Medical and Surgical Disorders in Pregnancy; General Gynecology; Gynecological Malignancies; Health Systems Organization, Research Methodology and Biostatistics. These section topics have been carefully covered by expert authors with the use of valid scientific data, policy instruments, and adapted to the cultural and social context of developing countries, with particular in depth coverage of conditions that have greater prevalence and incidence in developing countries. Each chapter also focuses on filling gaps in knowledge with a distinct pedagogical approach, starting with a set of learning objectives and ending with key takeaways for the chapter. This is an ideal guide for residents, medical students, practitioners of obstetrics and gynecology, midwives, general practitioners, and pediatricians, particularly those working in developing companies.

Traditional and Modern Health Systems in Nigeria by Toyin Falola,Matthew M. Heaton Pdf

Health related topics in African countries tend to be viewed negatively. With HIV infection rates soaring and health sectors ill-equipped to handle the needs of the general population in most sub-Saharan African countries, there seems little worth celebrating in terms of health care options for Africans. Historically, Nigeria has fit well into this assessment. The essays contained here do more than simply restate the failures of the Nigerian health sector - they raise practical issues about how the Nigerian health sector can impove the outlook for its citizens.

Comparative Health Law and Policy by Irehobhude O. Iyioha,Remigius N. Nwabueze Pdf

Health law and policy in Nigeria is an evolving and complex field of law, spanning a broad legal landscape and drawn from various sources. In addressing and interacting with these sources the volume advances research on health care law and policy in Nigeria and spells the beginning of what may now be formally termed the ’Nigerian health law and policy’ legal field. The collection provides a comparative analysis of relevant health policies and laws, such as reproductive and sexual health policy, organ donation and transplantation, abortion and assisted conception, with those in the United Kingdom, United States, Canada and South Africa. It critically examines the duties and rights of physicians, patients, health institutions and organizations, and government parastatals against the backdrop of increased awareness of rights among patient populations. The subjects, which are discussed from a legal, ethical and policy-reform perspective, critique current legislation and policies and make suggestions for reform. The volume presents a cohesive, comparative, and comprehensive analysis of the state of health law and policy in Nigeria with those in the US, Canada, South Africa, and the UK. As such, it provides a valuable comparison between Western and Non-Western countries.

Distribution of Resources in the Nigerian Health Care System by Anthony Okechukwu Nnadi Pdf

This publication, representing the doctoral dissertation of Rev. Fr. Anthony Okechukwu Nnadi examines the healthcare system in Nigeria in the light of the Catholic social teaching. He supports that the allocation of health care resources is not only a matter of organization, but is also an ethical problem. The debacles and failure of the Nigerian health system, result from many factors including lack of will to implement the right policies on the ground, corruption among the leaders, lack of justice, lack of respect for the dignity of each human person, mismanagement, and insufficient consideration and application of ethical principles in the administration of common good, especially in the distribution of health care and social resources. For the distribution of health care resources, this doctoral dissertation suggests that priority be given to the basic health care needs of Nigerian citizens especially those who have no means of satisfying these needs themselves. In this context, the research affirms that great attention needs to be paid to ensuring that the principle of human dignity is completely respected in each and every policy in this important area. This doctoral thesis is an ethical vision of social reality in Nigeria. It proposes the person-centred Catholic principles as a possible way forward in the distribution of health care resources in Nigeria. It does not imply substituting the economic, political and health care experts in offering technical solutions in their areas of competence. The author is convinced that healthcare allocation is also an ethical issue that needs to be governed by ethical principles. The key factors for choosing this theme are based on the author’s knowledge of the deplorable condition of the health care system in Nigeria and his desire to save human lives. Rev. Fr. Anthony Okechukwu Nnadi believes that we are all stewards of human life. This implies a moral obligation to protect the dignity of the human person, which is inseparable from protecting human life.

Historical Perspectives on the State of Health and Health Systems in Africa, Volume II by Mario J. Azevedo Pdf

This book focuses on Africa’s challenges, achievements, and failures over the past several centuries using an interdisciplinary approach that combines theory and fact and evidence-based practices and interventions in public health, and argues that most of the health problems in Africa are not a result of scarce or lack of resources, but of the misconceived and misplaced priorities that have left the continent behind every other on the globe in terms of health, education, and equitable distribution of opportunities and access to (quality) health as agreed by the United Nations member states at Alma-Ata in 1978.
