A clay door-lock sealing from the Middle Bronze Age III temple at Tel Haror, Israel by Baruch Brandl,Pirhiya Nahshoni,Eliezer D. Oren Pdf

Among the various practices in antiquity designed for administrative control of storage facilities and archives is the stamped clay sealing applied to the wooden lock of a closed door. This specialized type of door-lock sealing is still quite rare in the archaeological record. The discovery during the 1992 excavation season of an exceptionally preserved clay door-lock sealing in the late Middle Bronze Age (MB III; 1590-1530 BCE) sacred precinct at Tel Haror, Israel, is the first to be identified in this region and the first to be recorded in a temple context and is the subject of this study. This unique find qualifies for a detailed description, and for a reconstruction of its lock, key and sealing, as well as a discussion of the locking mechanism system, following the pioneering research on the outstanding corpus of such sealings from Arslantepe, Malatya. In addition, the archaeological context of the sealing and its possible association with the temple will be discussed.

Ancient Egyptian Temple Ritual by Katherine Eaton Pdf

Large state temples in ancient Egypt were vast agricultural estates, with interests in mining, trading, and other economic activities. The temple itself served as the mansion or palace of the deity to whom the estate belonged, and much of the ritual in temples was devoted to offering a representative sample of goods to the gods. After ritual performances, produce was paid as wages to priests and temple staff and presented as offerings to private mortuary establishments. This redistribution became a daily ritual in which many basic necessities of life for elite Egyptians were produced. This book evaluates the influence of common temple rituals not only on the day to day lives of ancient Egyptians, but also on their special events, economics, and politics. Author Katherine Eaton argues that a study of these daily rites ought to be the first step in analyzing the structure of more complex societal processes.

The Life of a Balinese Temple by Hildred Geertz Pdf

Should a temple be seen as a work of art, its carvers as artists, its worshipers as art critics and patrons? What is a temple (and its art) to the people who make and use it? Noted anthropologist Hildred Geertz attempts to answer these and other questions in this unique look at transformations in material culture and social relations over time in a village temple in Bali. Throughout Geertz offers insightful glimpses into what the statues, structures, and designs of Pura Désa Batuan convey to those who worship there, deepening our understanding of how a village community evaluates workmanship and imagery. Following an introduction to the temple and villagers of Batuan, Geertz explores the problematics of the Western concept of "art" as a guiding framework in research. She goes on to outline the many different kinds of work—ideational as well as physical—undertaken in connection with the temple and the social institutions that enable, constrain, and motivate their creation. Finally, the "art-works" themselves are presented, set within the intricate sociocultural contexts of their making. Using the history of Batuan as the main framework for discussing each piece, Geertz looks at the carvings from the perspective of their makers, each generation occupying a different social situation. She confronts concepts such as "aesthetics," "representation," "sacredness," and "universality" and the dilemmas they create in field research and ethnographic writing. Recent temple carvings from the tumultuous and complex period that followed the expulsion of the Dutch and the increasing globalization and commercialization of Balinese society demonstrate yet again that any anthropology of art must also be historical.

Solomon's Temple Spiritualized by John Bunyan Pdf

The use of Solomon's Temple is described as a foreshadow of salvation through Jesus Christ. John Bunyan used his extensive scripture knowledge to detail seventy Old Testament sacrificial elements and relates the commonality of concept with that of the New Testament. This edition is the George Offor text including his introduction and notes. "Every part of the building, including the foundation, its altar, its courts, the holy of holies, all the utensils, and the ark, were types of that more glorious system which, in the fulness of time, appeared as the antitype, and perfected the Divine revelation. The temple becomes therefore an object of our special attention as a light to guide us while searching into gospel truths."-George Offor

From Temple to Church by Stephen Emmel Pdf

Destruction of temples and their transformation into churches are central symbols of change in religious environment, socio-political system, and public perception in late antiquity.
