The Opposite of Ordinary by Jessica Sorensen Pdf

One day ago my life was pretty perfect. But a lot can change in a day. In one day, I went from being Ashlynn Wynterland, one of the most popular girls in school, to being the girl who spends lunchtime hiding out in Mr. Chester's classroom and watching Maxon Harter, and his science obsessed friends mess around with experiments. All because Queeny Harlington thinks I made out with her crush. Queeny Harlington is the queen of Fareland high. And up until a day ago, she was my best friend. Now she's my worst enemy who's threatening to tell the entire school all of my secrets. Being a friendless, social outcast has its downsides. So, when Maxon invites me to hang out with him and his mad scientist friends, I accept his offer, even though they all seem to despise me. Which is fine. Sort of... The truth is I've always thought Maxon is cute in a weirdly unordinary way. And the more I get to know him, the more I find myself liking him. But when Queeny decides to tell everyone my darkest secret of all, my new friendship doesn't look like it's going to survive. As my heart breaks, I make a choice that ends up shattering my world completely. In that dark moment, I learn who my real friends are and that nothing about Fareland is what it seems. The Heartbreaker Society: Books 1-2 includes: 1. The Complicated Life of Ashlynn: Volume 1 2. The Complicated Life of Ashlynn: Volume 2

Revolution of the Ordinary by Toril Moi Pdf

An argument for ordinary language philosophy’s ability to transform the prevailing understanding of language, theory and reading in literary studies today. This radically original book argues for the power of ordinary language philosophy—a tradition inaugurated by Ludwig Wittgenstein and J. L. Austin, and extended by Stanley Cavell—to transform literary studies. In engaging and lucid prose, Toril Moi demonstrates this philosophy’s unique ability to lay bare the connections between words and the world, dispel the notion of literature as a monolithic concept, and teach readers how to learn from a literary text. Moi first introduces Wittgenstein’s vision of language and theory, which refuses to reduce language to a matter of naming or representation, considers theory’s desire for generality doomed to failure, and brings out the philosophical power of the particular case. Contrasting ordinary language philosophy with dominant strands of Saussurean and post-Saussurean thought, she highlights the former’s originality, critical power, and potential for creative use. Finally, she challenges the belief that good critics always read below the surface, proposing instead an innovative view of texts as expression and action, and of reading as an act of acknowledgment. Intervening in cutting-edge debates while bringing Wittgenstein, Austin, and Cavell to new readers, Revolution of the Ordinary will appeal beyond literary studies to anyone looking for a philosophically serious account of why words matter. Praise for Revolution of the Ordinary “A milestone in literary studies. In lucid and invigorating prose, Moi shows how a certain picture of “literary theory” has held us captive and offers a brilliant and devastating analysis of its weaknesses. Drawing on the tradition of ordinary language philosophy, she offers a new vision of how we might think and read. This groundbreaking book will shape conversations among literary scholars for years to come.” —Rita Felski, author of The Limits of Critique “Revolution of the Ordinary takes on the formidable challenge of making Wittgenstein understandable and brilliantly shows his work’s relevance for critics educated in post-Structuralist, Lacanian, deconstructive, new historicist, culturalist, postcolonial, queer, feminist, and critical race theories. The growing interest in Wittgenstein among both literary critics and contemporary writers and poets absolutely demands this book.” —R. M. Berry, Florida State University “This is an agenda-setting work by a preeminent literary theorist. It is also tremendously fun to read. Revolution of the Ordinary is the kind of book that tells literary scholars and philosophers how to repair their relationship, and how to do so without losing what is distinctive about each discipline.” —John Gibson, University of Louisville

The Ordinary Virtues by Michael Ignatieff Pdf

Winner of the Zócalo Book Prize A New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice “Combines powerful moral arguments with superb storytelling.” —New Statesman What moral values do we hold in common? As globalization draws us together economically, are the things we value converging or diverging? These twin questions led Michael Ignatieff to embark on a three-year, eight-nation journey in search of an answer. What we share, he found, are what he calls “ordinary virtues”: tolerance, forgiveness, trust, and resilience. When conflicts break out, these virtues are easily exploited by the politics of fear and exclusion, reserved for one’s own group but denied to others. Yet these ordinary virtues are the key to healing and reconciliation on both a local and global scale. “Makes for illuminating reading.” —Simon Winchester, New York Review of Books “Engaging, articulate and richly descriptive... Ignatieff’s deft histories, vivid sketches and fascinating interviews are the soul of this important book.” —Times Literary Supplement “Deserves praise for wrestling with the devolution of our moral worlds over recent decades.” —Los Angeles Review of Books

Ordinary Recovery by William Alexander Pdf

The key to ongoing freedom from alcoholism or any other kind of addiction is right before us, here and now, in the ordinary and perfect present moment. The problem is that addictions are often the result of our efforts to escape living in the present in the first place. Bill Alexander’s unique approach uses mindfulness, story, and meditation to help alcoholics and others learn to come back to the present moment and find healing there. Emerging scientific research suggests that mindfulness (a nonjudgmental awareness of our moment-to-moment experience) can help prevent addiction relapse. Ordinary Recovery is a revised edition of Alexander’s book Cool Water, with a new foreword, a new preface by the author, updates throughout the book, and a new resources section.

Ordinary Wolves by Seth Kantner Pdf

Eskimo and white culture collide in this national bestselling novel of life in the contemporary Alaskan wilderness: “A magnificently realized story” (New York Times Book Review). Ordinary Wolves depicts a life different from what any of us has known: Inhuman cold, the taste of rancid salmon shared with shivering sled dogs, hunkering in a sod igloo while blizzards moan overhead. But this is the only world Cutuk Hawcley has ever known. Born and raised in the Arctic, he has learned to provide for himself by hunting, fishing, and trading. And yet, though he idolizes the indigenous hunters who have taught him how to survive, when he travels to the nearby Inupiaq village, he is jeered and pummeled by the native children for being white. When Cutuk ventures into the society of his own people, two incompatible realities collide, perfectly capturing "the contrast between the wild world and our ravaging consumer culture”. In a powerful coming of age story, a young man isolated by his past must choose between two worlds, both seemingly bent on rejecting him (Louise Erdrich). Winner of the Milkweed National Fiction Prize “As a revelation of the devastation modern America brings to a natural lifestyle, it's a tour de force and may be the best treatment of the Northwest and its people since Jack London's works.”—Publishers Weekly, starred review

Ordinary Landscapes, Special Places by Adam Menuge Pdf

Most of England's larger towns and cities are ringed by extensive suburbs dating from the 19th and 20th centuries, ranging from the opulent, spacious and leafy villa suburbs of the prosperous middle class to the dense gridirons of working-class and lower middle-class housing. The product of rapid urbanisation and industrialisation, these suburbs, once derided or disregarded, now face major change themselves. This book explores the development of one area of Liverpool's suburbs, examining the forces that shaped it and explaining the patterns that we see in the landscape today. The story that emerges will surprise many, and may prompt a re-evaluation of these 'ordinary' places.

The Ordinary Virtues by Michael Ignatieff Pdf

During a 3-year, 8-nation journey, Michael Ignatieff found that while human rights is the language of states and liberal elites, the moral language that resonates with most people is that of everyday virtues: tolerance, forgiveness, trust, and resilience. These ordinary virtues are the moral system of global cities and obscure shantytowns alike.

Quantum Theory, Deformation and Integrability by R. Carroll Pdf

About four years ago a prominent string theorist was quoted as saying that it might be possible to understand quantum mechanics by the year 2000. Sometimes new mathematical developments make such understanding appear possible and even close, but on the other hand, increasing lack of experimental verification make it seem to be further distant. In any event one seems to arrive at new revolutions in physics and mathematics every year. This book hopes to convey some of the excitment of this period, but will adopt a relatively pedestrian approach designed to illuminate the relations between quantum and classical. There will be some discussion of philosophical matters such as measurement, uncertainty, decoherence, etc. but philosophy will not be emphasized; generally we want to enjoy the fruits of computation based on the operator formulation of QM and quantum field theory. In Chapter 1 connections of QM to deterministic behavior are exhibited in the trajectory representations of Faraggi-Matone. Chapter 1 also includes a review of KP theory and some preliminary remarks on coherent states, density matrices, etc. and more on deterministic theory. We develop in Chapter 4 relations between quantization and integrability based on Moyal brackets, discretizations, KP, strings and Hirota formulas, and in Chapter 2 we study the QM of embedded curves and surfaces illustrating some QM effects of geometry. Chapter 3 is on quantum integrable systems, quantum groups, and modern deformation quantization. Chapter 5 involves the Whitham equations in various roles mediating between QM and classical behavior. In particular, connections to Seiberg-Witten theory (arising in N = 2 supersymmetric (susy) Yang-Mills (YM) theory) are discussed and we would still like to understand more deeply what is going on. Thus in Chapter 5 we will try to give some conceptual background for susy, gauge theories, renormalization, etc. from both a physical and mathematical point of view. In Chapter 6 we continue the deformation quantization then by exhibiting material based on and related to noncommutative geometry and gauge theory.
