The Origin and History of the Primitive Methodist Church, Vol. 1 (Classic Reprint) by H. B. Kendall Pdf

Excerpt from The Origin and History of the Primitive Methodist Church, Vol. 1 And the said several societies and classes, together with other congregations, societies, and classes, in several parts of England, were afterwards closely united and connected, and the whole thereof under the care of the said Hugh Bourne, James Bourne, William Clowes, and James Steele, were formed into one general community or Connexion, known and distinguished by the title or denomination of The Primitive Methodist Connexion.' Undoubtedly, then, William Clowes is right in his main contention, viz., that the Primitive Methodist Church began in 1811, and, therefore, that the proper history of the Church must also begin with that date. It is an anachronism to speak of Primitive Methodism before 1811. Any incidents which took place prior to the union effected in this memorable year, must be regarded as incidents and episodes belonging to a revivalistic movement, or series of revivalistic movements, locally differentiated, proceeding on early or primitive Methodist lines, partaking, therefore, of the nature of a survival, reaction, or return to an earlier type of aggressive agency, and finally converging and coalescing in one general community or Connexion. History of the Primitive Methodist Church by H. B. Kendall Pdf

Excerpt from History of the Primitive Methodist Church I count it an honour to write this brief foreword to this, the latest history of our Church. There must be few Primitive Methodists who are not acquainted with Mr. Kendall's smaller history published upwards of a quarter of a century ago, and with his "Principles and Polity of the Primitive Methodist Church." These little volumes, for many years, have been text-books for Local Preachers and for Ministerial Candidates. On one of my visits to the late Bishop of Durham I found these two books on the study table, and afterwards discovered that Dr. Westcott had read them with intentness and interest. The Standard History of our Church was written too by Mr. Kendall, and will immortalise his name. He was for nine years Connexional Editor, and in 1901 the President of Conference. The Book Committee felt that a smaller history was needed, bringing the story up to date. The present is practically a new volume. The historic imagination, the spiritual insight, the literary grace, which we all associate with the author, are all in evidence in these pages. The book has been written through love of the subject, with gratitude for the past, and with confidence for the future. The mention of Mr. Kendall brings his devoted and capable wife into mind. She it is who has been at his side during long years of physical weakness, and only her wonderful care has made possible the continuance and success of his literary labours. We greet them in this foreword, and commend the volume to all our people, and to the readers of other Churches. A History of Methodism in the United States, Vol. 1 of 2 (Classic Reprint) by James M. Buckley Pdf

Excerpt from A History of Methodism in the United States, Vol. 1 of 2 The following catalogue, arranged alphabetically under authors' names, includes but a minority of the volumes consulted in the preparation of this work. In some instances they have been published in various editions and by several publishers. Next to the official journals and other documents of the different denominations, the most important authorities are the personal journals of Wesley, Coke, Asbury, Garrettson, and other founders; the histories of Jesse Lee, Nathan Bangs, and Abel Stevens, in particular the last-named, whose works are invaluable and deserve the everlasting gratitude of both English and American Methodism. Bond, Emory, and Wakeley rendered valuable service; and Neely and Tigert pursued, in the order of time in which their names are placed, important investigations into the subjects comprehended under the titles of their works, and displayed the results in a clear and comprehensive manner. "The Wesley Memorial Volume," edited by Clark, and the "Lives of Methodist Bishops," edited by Flood and Hamilton, are very useful, the latter containing an immense amount of information in small compass. The special histories of the various branches of American Methodism, and the biographies of their founders, are indispensable. Among the biographies none surpasses Paine's "Life of McKendree," which is a mine of antiquarian knowledge and a repository of the writings of McKendree, Soule, and other controlling minds among those who gave Methodism its final forms. The "History of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South," by Gross Alexander, treats many interesting phases of the life and growth of that body, and afforded aid in investigations required by the plan of this work. The works of Lucius C. Matlack on the slavery controversy admirably fill a place occupied by no other productions. The reports of different organizations, the minutes of Annual Conferences, the "Methodist Magazine," the reviews, and the files of the weekly periodicals of American Methodism have been searched, and a large mass of unpublished epistolary correspondence and other manuscript examined. It is believed that the bibliography here given will afford sufficient indication to those who may desire to examine authorities. A History of the Methodist Episcopal Church, Vol. 3 (Classic Reprint) by Nathan Bangs Pdf

Excerpt from A History of the Methodist Episcopal Church, Vol. 3 It being desirable to have the alphabetical list of preachers unbroken, it has been thought advisable to transfer that list from the second to the third volume; and the more so as that volume is sufficiently large without it, containing, as it does, upward of four hun dred pages.
