Excerpt from The Origin and Varieties of the Semitic Alphabet: With Specimens The first edition of this little book was a reprint from the forms of The Hebrew Student, in which the first part was published in June, 1883. By a series of accidents the forms were destroyed in Chicago, and the tables in St. Louis, and a printed edition lost. Hence a second edition appears before much of the first is distributed. The publication of the second part unchanged in Hebraica at Morgan Park affords facilities for this edition. It is published mainly for distribution among the writer's personal and scholastic friends. Since the printing of the first edition Dr. Taylor has published his superb work, "The Alphabet," a monument of erudition to which I desire to pay a tribute of respect, while I am unable to accede to his approval of De Rouge's schedule of the Egyptian prototypes. It will be observed that in the essay I write "Semitic" in deference to common custom arising from the Greek and Latin tongues, but in the tables I write "Shemitic" in accordance with my own conviction that while scholars like Lenormant are writing Sheth and Noach the time has come when we should respect the Shemitic aspirates. This book is written principally as an historical study. Much of its substance was published in the Bibliotheca Sacra, Andover, in April, 1874, under the title History in Alphabets. The tables are selections from similar ones which the writer has made, embracing most of the known ancient and modern alphabets of the world. A useful work for all interested in the history of the alphabet. Hamilton shows a direct correspondence between the West Semitic alphabet and its proposed Egyptian counterparts. Following an examination of the various Egyptian prototypes, each grapheme of the various "Canaanite" scripts is shown and described in exhaustive detail in terms of feature and stance. Subsequently, each individual unit is augmented with a survey of the development of the names of letters and their vocalization, with the author pointing to acrophony, rhyming, and "clipping" as factors in their nomenclature. Hamilton also provides summary charts of the ancient Egyptian models and West Semitic derivatives.

The term "Old Negev" script refers to unique archaic (2nd to 1st millennium BC) West Semitic inscriptions found initially on rock surfaces and pottery fragments in the region located between the boarders of Egypt, Israel and the Jordan today. Specifically, a corpus of more than 140 panels have been identified in the deserts and the steppes between the Edomite Escarpment and the Aravah of Jordan and Israel, and extending through the central Negev (Nahal Avadot, Har Karkom) and the Northern Sinai regions. A few have also been discovered in materials from Lachish, Bet Shemish, Jerusalem and Shechem. This distinctive script was first identified and classified by Brigham Young University Professor Emeritus James R. Harris, Ed. D. (Brigham Young University). He was assisted in this work by Dann W Hone M.A. (Jerusalem University College), an administrator with the Jerusalem Center for Near Eastern Studies (Brigham Young University) and instructor of Ancient Scripture at B.Y.U. - Book site.

What could Greek poets or Roman historians say in their own language that would be lost in translation? After all, different languages have different personalities, and this is especially clear with languages of the ancient and medieval world.
