This system is not the development of a day, but has been in progress, in various ways, for many years, more particularly since the hidden meaning of Magnetism was discovered and applied by us. The nucleus of the present work appeared some time ago in a weekly periodical, in the form of Essays on Natural Science; and the reception given them, along with the importance and admitted necessity for such a work, has induced us to issue the present volume.
