The Origin of the Seasons Considered From a Geological Point of View (Classic Reprint) by Samuel Mossman Pdf

Excerpt from The Origin of the Seasons Considered From a Geological Point of View Perhaps this arises from the technical and abstruse method used by astronomers in describing the inclina tion of the earth's axis, its diurnal revolution, annual rotation, and attendant phenomena, Phenomena of great interest to the inhabitants of the earth - pheno mena which have their source in the double movement of our planet. From one day to another the inhabitants of the same place - let us rather say the inhabitants of the same latitude - see the sun ascend above the horizon to variable heights. The points in the east and west where the radiant body rises and sets change their places, the sun at noon attains a greater or lesser alti tude. And the length of its daily sojourn above the hori zon gives to the days and nights their variable and. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Through Vegetal Being by Luce Irigaray,Michael Marder Pdf

Blossoming from a correspondence between Luce Irigaray and Michael Marder, Through Vegetal Being is an intense personal, philosophical, and political meditation on the significance of the vegetal for our lives, our ways of thinking, and our relations with human and nonhuman beings. The vegetal world has the potential to rescue our planet and our species and offers us a way to abandon past metaphysics without falling into nihilism. Luce Irigaray has argued in her philosophical work that living and coexisting are deficient unless we recognize sexuate difference as a crucial dimension of our existence. Michael Marder believes the same is true for vegetal difference. Irigaray and Marder consider how plants contribute to human development by sustaining our breathing, nourishing our senses, and keeping our bodies and minds alive. They note the importance of returning to ancient Greek tradition and engaging with Eastern teachings to revive a culture closer to nature. As a result, we can reestablish roots when we are displaced and recover the vital energy we need to improve our sensibility and relation to others. This generative discussion points toward a more universal way of becoming human that is embedded in the vegetal world.

The Unfolding of The Seasons by Ralph Cohen Pdf

First published in 1970, The Unfolding of The Seasons provides an interpretation and evaluation of James Thomson’s poem The Seasons. Professor Cohen urges its reconsideration as a major Augustan poem, arguing that Thomson’s unity, diction and thought combine with a conception of man, nature and God which is poetically tenable and distinctive. The case for The Seasons as an important work of art depends upon its effectiveness as a moving vision of human experience, and Professor Cohen believes that many critics have not felt this effectiveness because they have misconceived Thomson’s vision and misunderstood his idiom. His study aims to persuade them to return to the poem and to examine it within the context of an Augustan tradition. Professor Cohen shows that Thomson’s great achievement is to have fashioned a conception which, by bringing nature to the forefront of his poem, became a new poetic way of defining human experience. Thomson was not the first nature poet in English, but he was the first to provide an effective idiom in which science, orthodox religion, natural description, and classical allusions blended to describe the glory, baseness and uncertainty of man’s earthly environment, holding forth the hope of heavenly love and wisdom. This study shows that Thomson found a personal idiom by means of which he created an artistic vision. It will appeal to those with an interest in English literature and in philosophy.
