The Other Country by Carol Ann Duffy Pdf

The Other Country was Carol Ann Duffy’s third collection, and as with her later books, takes its readers on journeys that seem initially similar – but soon prove anything but. This book leads our imagination to places our minds could not have suspected were there, or would not have dared to go alone. Some of its voices are disarmingly direct, while others blur the lines between fantasy and reality, confession and self-delusion, forcing us to re-examine everything we thought we knew about some of our most basic human drives and emotions. Deeply intelligent, unflinchingly honest, with a deftness of touch and tone, and openness all the more moving for its lack of sentimentality, The Other Country is as remarkable a collection today as it was on its first publication.

Other Country by Stephen Scourfield Pdf

"Set in the mythic, remote country of the Top End, Other Country tells the story of two young brothers, The Ace and Wild Billy, and their struggle to overcome the bitter legacy of their brutal father. Bound by blood and memories and trust, they are destined to clash -- one fettered by the past, the other straining towards the future. And out of it all lead only two paths... to end up mean and empty like the Old Man, or not." "Written with an authentic grittiness and an understated, dry humour, it is also an unforgettable story of the 'other country' of the Top End, the implacable and unforgiving moods of the landscape and the laconic and tough characters who make this hard country their home." --Back cover.

The Other Country by Michael Whelan Pdf

Michael and Helen Whelan believed that life after the birth of their first child would be the most amazing adventure. But at 14 months of age, their precious son Charlie's development seemed to stall and Michael and Helen began to realise that something was wrong. Referred to a paediatrician by their GP, they were given the shattering news: Charlie was autistic. For Michael and Helen, this diagnosis was bewildering, frightening and heartbreaking; neither was really sure what autism was or what it meant to Charlie's, and their family's, future. The Other Country is Michael Whelan's account of what happened next – the obstacles they faced, the treatments they tried and the people they met. The Whelans story is one of triumphs and setbacks, of tests and uncertainties, and above all, of dedication and love.

I Live in the Country & Other Dirty Poems by Arielle Greenberg Pdf

"Sexually explicit poems that address the radical possibilities of a woman's pleasure and the endless varieties of human desire. Arielle Greenberg's I Live in the Country & other dirty poems exploits and undoes the stereotype of the "wholesome country life." Here, the speaker moves to the country ("where the animals are") in order to live a whole life, one in which she can live honestly and openly in a non-monogamous marriage. Her book is a visceral, erotic celebration of the cornucopia of sexual pleasures to be had in that rural life-in the muck of a pasture in spring or behind the bins of whole-wheat pastry flour at the local Co-op. Greenberg hauls out what has previously been stored under dark counters and labeled deviant-kink, fetish, and bondage- and moves it into the sunshine of sex-positivity and mutual consent. In doing so, she forges new literary territory-a feminist re-visioning of the Romantic pastoral poems of seduction. "I am trying to turn my eye toward joy," she writes. "My heart toward bliss.""--

A Day in the Country and Other Stories by Guy de Maupassant Pdf

This selection of twenty-seven stories shows Maupassant at his comic, cruel, and brilliant best. In addition to the poignant title story, it includes one of the most famous tales ever written, The Necklace , and Le Horla, an account of a disintegrating personality that chillingly parallels the author's own decline into madness. All the stories demonstrate his genius for invention and his ability to write unblinkingly about the absurdity of the human condition, supporting Henry James' claim that in the annals of story-telling, Maupassant stands `like a lion in the path'. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Random Family by Adrian Nicole LeBlanc Pdf

This New York Times bestseller intimately depicts urban life in a gripping book that slips behind cold statistics and sensationalism to reveal the true sagas lurking behind the headlines of gangsta glamour. In her extraordinary bestseller, Adrian Nicole LeBlanc immerses readers in the intricacies of the ghetto, revealing the true sagas lurking behind the headlines of gangsta glamour, gold-drenched drug dealers, and street-corner society. Focusing on two romances—Jessica’s dizzying infatuation with a hugely successful young heroin dealer, Boy George, and Coco’s first love with Jessica's little brother, Cesar—Random Family is the story of young people trying to outrun their destinies. Jessica and Boy George ride the wild adventure between riches and ruin, while Coco and Cesar stick closer to the street, all four caught in a precarious dance between survival and death. Friends get murdered; the DEA and FBI investigate Boy George; Cesar becomes a fugitive; Jessica and Coco endure homelessness, betrayal, the heartbreaking separation of prison, and, throughout it all, the insidious damage of poverty. Charting the tumultuous cycle of the generations—as girls become mothers, boys become criminals, and hope struggles against deprivation—LeBlanc slips behind the cold statistics and sensationalism and comes back with a riveting, haunting, and true story.

The Other Country by James Carscallen Pdf

In this study of Alice Munro's writing style, James Carscallen reveals a consistency to her works previously unsuspected, creating an unconscious thread throughout Munro's creations. Carscallen sets out his interpretive model as it applies to individual stories, and then shifts his emphasis from theory to practice and extends his scope from individual stories to the groupings they make. He argues that Munro's work offers the reader the great human myths, but as half-concealed -- both from the characters themselves and from the reader -- behind a surface ordinariness that seems anything but mythical.

The Other Side of Italy by Franco Pittau Pdf

In Italy, the rate of foreign immigration is among one of the major cultural shifts after World War II. Increased immigration rates account not only for people fleeing from countries during the war or times of unstable political situations (170,000 in 2014), but also for people relocating for work or family-related reasons. The immigrants were fewer than 150,000 in 1970, but currently count for 5 million (8% of the total population, not including those who have become Italian citizens), and are more numerous than Italian citizens residing abroad (4.5 million). This book proposes to introduce foreign readers to this phenomenon, which is in some respects problematic. Translation of texts written for Italian readers was avoided and the authors made choices to include original themes that could be interesting to readers outside Italy. The book's conclusions were entrusted to three immigrants: an Albanian sociologist, an Eritrean researcher and an Algerian novelist. According to the forecasts of demographers, the future Italy will be a country of large-scale immigrations, accounting for more than 10 million people by mid-century. Will Italy only be a country with many immigrants or a country with an adequate migration policy? Although society is still divided on the subject of newcomers, this book hopes to solve this issue in a positive manner and stimulate greater interest abroad.

The Honky Tonk on the Left by Mark Allan Jackson Pdf

Massively popular for the past century, country music has often been associated with political and social conservatism. While such figures as George Wallace, Richard Nixon, and Ted Cruz have embraced and even laid claim to this musical genre over the years, country performers have long expressed bold and progressive positions on a variety of public issues, whether through song lyrics, activism, or performance style. Bringing together a wide spectrum of cultural critics, The Honky Tonk on the Left takes on this conservative stereotype and reveals how progressive thought has permeated country music from its beginnings to the present day. The original essays in this collection analyze how diverse performers, including Fiddlin' John Carson, Webb Pierce, Loretta Lynn, Johnny Cash, O. B. McClinton, Garth Brooks, and Uncle Tupelo, have taken on such issues as government policies, gender roles, civil rights, prison reform, and labor unrest. Taking notice of the wrongs in their eras, these musicians worked to address them in song and action, often with strong support from fans. In addition to the volume editor, this collection includes work by Gregory N. Reish, Peter La Chapelle, Stephanie Vander Wel, Charles L. Hughes, Ted Olson, Nadine Hubbs, Stephanie Shonekan, Stephen A. King, P. Renee Foster, Tressie McMillan Cottom, Travis D. Stimeling, and Jonathan Silverman.
