The Other Side of the Opium Question by William James Moore Pdf

This book is a thought-provoking examination of the opium trade in Asia in the late nineteenth century. The author argues that the opium trade was not solely the fault of the British colonial authorities, but was the result of complex economic and cultural factors. The book provides a nuanced and balanced perspective on this controversial issue. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. The Opium Question (Classic Reprint) by Samuel Warren Pdf

Excerpt from The Opium Question Before proceeding to detail the immediate occur renees out of which the present question has arisen, it may be as well to intimate generally that the British Opium Trade between India and China, which had been carried on, for upwards of forty years, under a nominal, if not an actual, prohibition, - became, within the last three years, the object of very strenuous opposition on the part of the Chinese, on grounds which will be clearly explained hereafter. The pro posal to legalize the trade, was, in the latter end of the year 1886, seriously entertained, but at length abandoned, by the Emperor; the former circumstance giving a great impetus to it, -encouraged, too, as it was, by the highest provincial authorities in China, to whom it yielded a large revenue. In the years 1837 and 1838, measures of rapidly-increasing strin geney and vigour were pointed by the Chinese at the traffic, the aspect of affairs becoming every day more threatening. No steps, however, appear to have been taken towards foreigners, till the 12th of December, 1838; on which day preparations were made by the Chinese authorities for strangling a Native Opium dealer in front of the F actory - an act to the foreigners most offensive and unprecedented, and which led to a brief stoppage of the trade. Opinions of Over 100 Physicians on the Use of Opium in China (Classic Reprint) by William Hector Park Pdf

Excerpt from Opinions of Over 100 Physicians on the Use of Opium in China At one of our Soochow weekly prayer meetings, in December, 1895, Rev. Joseph Bailie brought up the subject of the evils of opium smoking and suggested that it was high time for some action on this question by the great missionary body of China. The suggestion was well received, and at a meeting of the Soochow Missionary and Literary Association, January 2nd, 1896, a committee composed of Rev. H. C. DuBose, Chairman; Rev. W. N. Crozier and Drs. Anne Walter, J. R. Wilkinson, J. B. Fearn and W. H. Park, was appointed to investigate best ways and means, and bring in a report at the next meeting. At the next meeting this committee reported in favor of the formation of an Anti-opium League in China, and this same committee, with the addition of Mr. Bailie, was finally appointed to correspond with the various missionary associations and committees in China with reference to the organization of such League. The labors of the committee were successful, and at the first meeting of the new organisation Dr. W. H. Park, Rev. Y. K. Yen and Rev. G. L. Mason were appointed a committee to prepare a pamphlet setting forth the views of the foreign physicians in China on the use of opium in this country. I was in despair at my appointment, and nothing was done for some time. Finally, it seeming to devolve upon me to take the lead, I got out a series of questions, based on the questions asked by the Royal Opium Commission, and submitted them to the other members of the committee. They made a few changes and agreed to the plan of sending these questions to every physician in China and compiling the answers. Accordingly the questions were printed and sent out, and if any physician in China was overlooked it was accidental. At the head of the printed slip was placed the following statement and appeal: - Dear Doctor: - The information we wish to gain by the following questions is to be used in getting out a pamphlet by the Anti-Opium League in China. Opium’s Orphans by P. E. Caquet Pdf

Upending all we know about the war on drugs, a history of the anti-narcotics movement’s origins, evolution, and questionable effectiveness. Opium’s Orphans is the first full history of drug prohibition and the “war on drugs.” A no-holds-barred but balanced account, it shows that drug suppression was born of historical accident, not rational design. The war on drugs did not originate in Europe or the United States, and even less with President Nixon, but in China. Two Opium Wars followed by Western attempts to atone for them gave birth to an anti-narcotics order that has come to span the globe. But has the war on drugs succeeded? As opioid deaths and cartel violence run rampant, contestation becomes more vocal, and marijuana is slated for legalization, Opium's Orphans proposes that it is time to go back to the drawing board.
