Classification of Pseudo-reductive Groups (AM-191) by Brian Conrad,Gopal Prasad Pdf

In the earlier monograph Pseudo-reductive Groups, Brian Conrad, Ofer Gabber, and Gopal Prasad explored the general structure of pseudo-reductive groups. In this new book, Classification of Pseudo-reductive Groups, Conrad and Prasad go further to study the classification over an arbitrary field. An isomorphism theorem proved here determines the automorphism schemes of these groups. The book also gives a Tits-Witt type classification of isotropic groups and displays a cohomological obstruction to the existence of pseudo-split forms. Constructions based on regular degenerate quadratic forms and new techniques with central extensions provide insight into new phenomena in characteristic 2, which also leads to simplifications of the earlier work. A generalized standard construction is shown to account for all possibilities up to mild central extensions. The results and methods developed in Classification of Pseudo-reductive Groups will interest mathematicians and graduate students who work with algebraic groups in number theory and algebraic geometry in positive characteristic.

Government Secrecy by Jan Goldman Ph.D.,Susan Maret Pdf

Government Secrecy presents the best that has been thought and written on the subject, including history and philosophy, theory and practice, justification and critique. Through readings, which range from Georg Simmel on secrecy and Max Weber on bureaucracy and secret-keeping, to post-9/11 concerns regarding freedom of information and presidential secrecy, it enables readers to explore the issues and questions that surround the government's right to keep necessary secrets—or not. This collection, and the diverse perspectives it represents, will engage students and other interested parties in a discussion of the benefits—and dangers—of government secrecy. The collection is designed to generate questions regarding historical accuracy of government information, information ethics, professional neutrality, ownership of information, public right to information, national security, and transparency. The essays explore the criteria and conditions for government secret-keeping, as well as contributing to public and academic discussion of the role of secrets in democracies.

Who Needs to Know? - The State of Public Access to Federal Government Information by Patrice McDermott Pdf

Despite intense media scrutiny, only a small percentage of the American government's most essential information reaches the average person. This withholding of information is dangerous in a democratic society, where openness is a cherished value. Here are some samples of the topics included in Who Needs to Know?: The history, use, and abuse of national security classification; The state of the Freedom of Information Act in the Bush Administration; Examination of the concept of sensitive but unclassified and the proliferation of such markings to shut off access to information; The administration s suppression of government science and scientists and its impact on policy and on government employees; The manipulation of the media for both political and ideological reasons; Suggestions on how to connect and communicate with organizations and your elected officials to effect a positive change in the state of public access to federal government information. We the people need to understand how to interact with our government, engage in public policy decision-making, and hold the government (and those who act on its behalf or under its regulations) accountable for sharing information. Dr. McDermott provides historical context on this issue, along with expert insights and useful recommendations from her years at the forefront of the battle to protect the public s right to know.

Giving a Voice to Open Source Stakeholders: A Survey of State, Local, and Tribal Law Enforcement by Bennie G. Thompson Pdf

U.S. law enforcement (LE) officials, first responders, and the private sector need timely, relevant, and actionable intelligence to secure the Nation against threats. Some of this intelligence can be produced with open source info. available from newspapers, periodicals, the Internet, scientific journals, and others, and can provide LE with actionable intelligence. The Dept. of Homeland Security (DHS) was established, in part, to improve the sharing of info. among Fed., State, and local gov¿t. agencies and the private sector. This report surveyed over 350 State, local, and tribal LE officials to better understand their intelligence needs and the benefits of an open source program at DHS, in light of other open source activities underway across the U.S. Intell. Community.

Computer and Information Science by Roger Lee Pdf

This book presents the edited proceedings of the 16th IEEE/ACIS International Conference on Computer and Information Science (ICIS 2017), which was held on May 24–26, 2017 in Wuhan, China. The aim of this conference was to bring together researchers and scientists, businessmen and entrepreneurs, teachers, engineers, computer users, and students to discuss the various fields of computer science, share their experiences and exchange new ideas and information. The research results included relate to all aspects (theory, applications and tools) of computer and information science, and discuss the practical challenges encountered and the solutions adopted to solve them. The work selected represents 17 of the most promising papers from the conference, written by authors who are certain to make further significant contributions to the field of computer and information science.

Pseudo-reductive Groups by Brian Conrad,Ofer Gabber,Gopal Prasad Pdf

Pseudo-reductive groups arise naturally in the study of general smooth linear algebraic groups over non-perfect fields and have many important applications. This self-contained monograph provides a comprehensive treatment of the theory of pseudo-reductive groups and gives their classification in a usable form. The authors present numerous new results and also give a complete exposition of Tits' structure theory of unipotent groups. They prove the conjugacy results (conjugacy of maximal split tori, minimal pseudo-parabolic subgroups, maximal split unipotent subgroups) announced by Armand Borel and Jacques Tits, and also give the Bruhat decomposition, of general smooth connected algebraic groups. Researchers and graduate students working in any related area, such as algebraic geometry, algebraic group theory, or number theory, will value this book as it develops tools likely to be used in tackling other problems.

Algebraic Groups: Structure and Actions by Mahir Bilen Can Pdf

This volume contains the proceedings of the 2015 Clifford Lectures on Algebraic Groups: Structures and Actions, held from March 2–5, 2015, at Tulane University, New Orleans, Louisiana. This volume consists of six articles on algebraic groups, including an enhanced exposition of the classical results of Chevalley and Rosenlicht on the structure of algebraic groups; an enhanced survey of the recently developed theory of pseudo-reductive groups; and an exposition of the recently developed operational -theory for singular varieties. In addition, there are three research articles containing previously unpublished foundational results on birational automorphism groups of algebraic varieties; solution of Hermite-Joubert problem over -closed fields; and cohomological invariants and applications to classifying spaces. The old and new results presented in these articles will hopefully become cornerstones for the future development of the theory of algebraic groups and applications. Graduate students and researchers working in the fields of algebraic geometry, number theory, and representation theory will benefit from this unique and broad compilation of fundamental results on algebraic group theory.

Pseudo-Coordination and Multiple Agreement Constructions by Giuliana Giusti,Vincenzo Nicolò Di Caro,Daniel Ross Pdf

Verbal Pseudo-Coordination (as in English ‘go and get’) has been described for a number of individual languages, but this is the first edited volume to emphasize this topic from a comparative perspective, and in connection to Multiple Agreement Constructions more generally. The chapters include detailed analyses of Romance, Germanic, Slavic and other languages. These contributions show important cross-linguistic similarities in these constructions, as well as their diversity, providing insights into areas such as the morphology-syntax and syntax-semantics interfaces, dialectal variation and language contact. This volume establishes Pseudo-Coordination as a descriptively important and theoretically challenging cross-linguistic phenomenon among Multiple Agreement Constructions and will be of interest to specialists in individual languages as well as typologists and theoreticians, serving as a foundation to promote continued research.
