The Oxford Companion to Australian Military History by Peter Dennis Pdf

This is a comprehensive guide to Australian military history, broadly conceived within a critical and analytical framework. It contains 800 entries. The editors have sought a balance between various types of entries. Their interpretation of 'military history' is inclusive, extending beyondstandard categories such as battles, campaigns, biographies and weapons, and encompassing entries on the structures of various parts of the defence force organization and their evolution, military language and customs, literature dealing with military themes and treaties, alliances and acts ofparliament that have had a significant impact on the military. Biographical entries vary from long analytical essays on figures such as Thomas Blamey and C.E.W. Bean to much shorter entries on figures of less importance. Not every Chief of General Staff or RAN and RAAF equivalent has an entry: as the editors say, some were undistinguished. All office holdersof significant rank within the three services are listed in an appendix. No attempt is made to duplicate the Australian Dictionary of Biography; nor, except in two instances, have the editors commissioned articles on specific individuals from the historians who wrote those particular entries forADB. The editors' focus is different, combining essential biographical facts with more commentary and analysis. Battles are grouped into overall campaigns, thus providing a more integrated approach enabling greater analysis of broader issues. The Companion offers essential technical details on every significant weapons system employed in the three services since their inception, together with comments thathelp place those systems in an operational and sometimes political context. In addition, there are several longer articles on key aspects of military history and culture. The entry on conscription, while not neglecting past controversies, explains the mechanics of the various methods. There is anabsorbing entry on the ways in which animals have been used by the military. Aboriginal resistance to white invasion is covered in a long entry, as is Aboriginal service in the armed forces. There are also several articles on military influences in Australian culture - war films, literature, art, popular culture. Complete with 100 photographs and 32 maps, the result is a comprehensive work of reference, analysis and interest that will come to be regarded as the authoritative work in the field.

In this fascinating account, leading Australian military historians tackle 10 of the most enduring historical zombies, or national myths, that have staggered their way through the halls of military history for more than 200 years. Provocative and opinionated, this record attempts to correct the historical record.

American Military History by William Thomas Allison,Jeffrey Grey,Janet G. Valentine Pdf

"This textbook is meant to serve as a foundation for undergraduate courses in American military history ... War, naturally, plays a central role in this textbook, and in several instances chapters are devoted solely to conflict. Other issues and events beyond war, however, also characterize the American military experience. The struggle between the tradition of militia and the need for a standing army, the evolution of civil-military relations, the advent of professionalism in the military, the non-military uses of the military, and the military's role in democratic society as a tool of international and domestic power, a social institution, and symbol of American prestige abroad are also part of the experience. In order to gain a holistic appreciation of American military history, these themes and others must be examined in the context of American history"--Preface.

The Last Word? by Jeffrey Grey Pdf

Official history is a misunderstood genre of historical writing, which attracts much negative comment from (non-official) historians but about which very little detail is actually known. This book examines the development of official history programs in Canada, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand over the course of the twentieth century, looking at the ways in which they developed and the contributions each made to their respective national historiography. The second part of the work develops some themes from the first and takes the official histories of the Second World War as case studies. Drawing on programs in Australia, Britain, and the United States, these essays examine the relationship between the histories, the historians, and their sponsoring institutions. They assess the impact of the histories on historical understanding of the Second World War. They also consider the impact that contemporary events during the Cold War had on the writing of the official history.

The Oxford Handbook of Ethics of War by Seth Lazar,Helen Frowe Pdf

Recent years have seen a resurgence of interest, among both philosophers, legal scholars, and military experts, on the ethics of war. Due in part due to post 9/11 events, this resurgence is also due to a growing theoretical sophistication among scholars in this area. Recently there has been very influential work published on the justificaton of killing in self-defense and war, and the topic of the ethics of war is now more important than ever as a discrete field. The 28 commissioned chapters in this Handbook will present a comprehensive overview of the field as well as make significant and novel contributions, and collectively they will set the terms of the debate for the next decade. Lazar and Frowe will invite the leading scholars in the field to write on topics that are new to them, making the volume a compilation of fresh ideas rather than a rehash of earlier work. The volume will be dicided into five sections: Method, History, Resort, Conduct, and Aftermath. The contributors will be a mix of junior and senior figures, and will include well known scholars like Michael Walzer, Jeff McMahan, and David Rodin.

Australia's Palestine Campaign 1916-1918 by Jean Bou Pdf

With nearly two mounted divisions engaged against the Ottoman Empire in the Middle East for almost three years the Palestine Campaign was Australia's longest running militarily significant endeavour of the First World War after the Western Front. And yet apart from the battle of Beersheba, the Palestine Campaign receives little attention in Australia compared to Gallipoli and the Western Front. In contrast to the years of grinding trench warfare in France and Belgium, the Palestine Campaign was a war of relative movement and manoeuvre. Cavalry, including Australia's light horse, played a prominent role, but it was a hard fought fully modern war, in which the latest military technologies and techniques were all used.
