The Peak District of Derbyshire and Neighbouring Counties (Classic Reprint) by Mountford J. B. Baddeley Pdf

Excerpt from The Peak District of Derbyshire and Neighbouring Counties Definition of the Peak District. "Can yon tell me which is the Peak?" asked a gentleman whom we once found surveying with an unsatisfied expression of countenance the prospect from the Ordnance cairn on Axe Edge. "With pleasure ..." we began. A man who was writing a guide book to the Peak district could surely have no difficulty in pointing out which was the Peak, especially from a viewpoint commanding the greater part of it. A difficulty there is, however, and it is two-fold - natural and artificial. Natural, because except the little pimple which forms the summit of Win Hill and the two or three abrupt little limestone crags rising from the upper valley of the Dove, there is nothing whatever in the whole panorama from Axe Edge to correspond with the Johnsonian definition of a peak as a "sharply-pointed hill." There is scarcely a hill-country in Britain which has fewer peaks than the Peak itself. A more appropriate name would be the "Cop" - a word signifying a rounded hill as opposed to a peak, and actually occurring in one or two instances in or near the district: e. g. - Mow Cop, Wardlow Hay Cop. - It seems to be of the same origin as the Dutch "Kop" and the Latin "Caput." Then, artificially or politically - whichever it be - the geography of the district has got strangely mixed up. The area described in this book includes the whole of the hill - country of North Derbyshire and such parts of the adjacent counties as physically belong to it: - the basins, to wit, of the Derwent, the Wye, the Dove, the Dane, and the Goyt. This definition, however, is purely arbitrary. Neither the Ordnance surveyors nor the local authorities support it. Pecsaetna by Phil Sidebottom Pdf

This book is intended to pull together our current knowledge of the ‘lost’ group of people called the Pecsaetna (literally, meaning the ‘Peak Sitters’) by synthesising more recent historical and archaeological research towards a better understanding of their activities, territory and identity. This group of people is shrouded in the mists of the so-called ‘Dark Ages’ and are only known to us by the chance survival of less than a handful of documents. Since the mid-20th century, valuable work has been done to identify former Anglo-Saxon estates in the Peak from the analysis of charters and from the Domesday survey, together with recent wider historical analysis. In addition, some have also attempted reconstructions of geographical territories from the Tribal Hidage, the document, which first mentions the Pecsaetna. To this historical analysis can be added further archaeological evidence which ranges from Anglo-Saxon barrow investigation in the limestone Peak District, to studies into the geographical distributions of free-standing stone monuments of the Anglo-Saxon and Anglo-Scandinavian periods. It is this latter study that has prompted the writer to attempt this study.

The Animals: Love Letters Between Christopher Isherwood and Don Bachardy by Christopher Isherwood,Don Bachardy Pdf

The love story between Christopher Isherwood and Don Bachardy—in their own words The English novelist and screenwriter Christopher Isherwood was already famous as the author of Goodbye to Berlin when he met Don Bachardy, a California teenager, on the beach in Santa Monica in 1952. Within a year, they began to live together as an openly gay couple, defying convention in the closeted world of Hollywood. Isherwood was forty-eight; Bachardy was eighteen. The Animals is the testimony in letters to their extraordinary partnership, which lasted until Isherwood's death in 1986—despite the thirty year age gap, affairs and jealousy (on both sides), the pressures of increasing celebrity, and the disdain of twentieth-century America for love between two men. The letters reveal the private world of the Animals: Isherwood was "Dobbin," a stubborn old workhorse; Bachardy was the rash, playful "Kitty." Isherwood had a gift for creating a safe and separate domestic milieu, necessary for a gay man in midtwentieth-century America. He drew Bachardy into his semi-secret realm, nourished Bachardy's talent as a painter, and launched him into the artistic career that was first to threaten and eventually to secure their life together. The letters also tell of public achievements—the critical acclaim for A Single Man, the commercial success of Cabaret—and the bohemian whirl of friendships in Los Angeles, London, and New York with such stars as Truman Capote, Julie Harris, David Hockney, Vanessa Redgrave, Gore Vidal, and Tennessee Williams. Bold, transgressive, and playful, The Animals articulates the devotion, in tenderness and in storms, between two uniquely original spirits.
