Yet significant aspects of how money works in society are concealed by myths, dogmas, and misperceptions. In The Power of Money Henry Bretton focuses on how money works in a democracy. He contends that the well-being of political democracy depends on a fuller understanding of the centrality of money in politics, and he presents his ideas on monetary policy, corruption and reform, banking and politics, private power within a democracy, money in international relations, and the system-destroying effects of money. He reviews what social theorists and economists from Aristotle to Friedman have thought about the role of money in society and how it affects individual behavior and social norms. The link between economics and politics has been only partially explored, he contends, and he sees the major task for social scientists as developing a fuller integration of the two mainstreams of social theory, the political and the economic.

Japanese Christian leader Takakura Tokutaro, 1885-1934, is the focus of this exhaustive historical and theological study. Takakura's life spanned a critical period in developing Japan, a new member of the "modern family of nations." At the age of 21, through the preaching of the immensely influential church leader Uemura Masahisa, Takakura converted to the Christian faith. He later spent over two years in the West, reading extensively in British and German theology. Takakura thus faced the challenge of absorbing numerous lines of influence and re-articulating the Christian faith within his own generation's distinctly Japanese linguistic and religio-cultural context. His personal religious experience was a microcosm of the universalization of Christian theology during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Despite having played important leadership roles within the Protestant Church in Japan during the 1920s and early 1930s, Takakura's name is scarcely known outside limited Japanese theological circles. This study lends recognition to his influential role in the Christian Church. It also utilizes Takakura's example to provide further insight into the universalizing trend in Christian thought that continues even today.

Japan's modern written law is Western. However, this law operates in a society whose values are pre-Western. In order to understand the function of modern law one has to study older systems of law as well. The main phases of Japan's pre-modern legal development are first, the indigenous customary law of the Yamato state. Next, the import and adaptation of Chinese codes from the 7th century onwards. Third, the use of Chinese legal techniques to bring order to the indigenous feudal law, culminating in the thirteenth century, and leading to the independence of Japan's legal system from that of China.
