The Penn Family (Classic Reprint) by John Jay Smith Pdf

Excerpt from The Penn Family The object of the present paper - written at the request of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania - is to bring down to the present day a history of the Penn family, rather than to commemorate its elder branches, or enter upon a history of the State. Beginning with Sir William Penn, Knight, the father of our founder, and one of England's great admirals, we briefly trace his ancestry to William Penn, who died in the year 1591. His son, Giles Penn, the father of the admiral, was born in 1621, and married, in 1643, Margaret Jasper. The admiral, a man of great ability in his profession, received early and rapid promotion, rising, at twenty-one, to be captain in the English navy, vice-admiral of Ireland at twenty-six, admiral in the Straits at twenty-nine, vice-admiral of England at thirty-one, general of the Dutch war at thirty-two, member of Parliament at thirty-four, governor of Kingsale at thirty-nine, and captain-commander under the Duke of York at forty-three. The Family of William Penn by Howard M. Jenkins Pdf

Excerpt from The Family of William Penn: Founder of Pennsylvania, Ancestry and Descendants The occasion of this volume is substantially, perhaps sufficiently, stated in the opening of the first chapter. To the explanation there given a few particulars may be added. There has always been, the author believes, a strong and very reasonable interest in the personality of William Penn, as the Founder of Pennsylvania, and as a worthy figure in the world's history, and some of this interest attaches to the line of those who have descended from him. The volume here prepared assumes simply to deal with this Family subject. It is not a history nor a biography. In one or two places, perhaps, the record has been permitted an extension which could not be entirely justified by the plan of the work, but excusing this by the special interest of the subject at those points, the author thinks the book has been fairly confined to its original and legitimate plan. Some of the family letters, very possibly, may be regarded as containing details too trivial for printing. The view adopted as to such matters has been that the account is thus made more precise and distinct, and is invested with human interest. Indeed, a book of this character must in part find its justification as being a study, a picture, of social conditions in the period to which it belongs, and such a study or picture is obviously of little value unless it is presented with lines sufficiently distinct, and details sufficiently definite, to make a positive impression on the mind. William Penn by John Stoughton Pdf

Excerpt from William Penn: The Founder of Pennsylvania America naturally recalls attention to the story of his life. I have been requested by my publishers to prepare a new work on the subject: and Quaker descent on my mother's side, the study for many years of opinions entertained by the Society of Friends, and sympathy with the founder of Pennsylvania in his love of peace, and his advocacy of civil and re ligious freedom, have rendered the task pleasant and interesting. The writings of Penn, and his life by Thomas Clarkson, in two volumes, 1813, supply a basis for the whole work. But important supplementary know ledge has been added since. The controversy raised by Lord Macaulay touching Penn's relations with James II. Illustrated those points in many ways and the Right Hon. W. E. Forster especially, in his ex haustive pamphlet on the subject, published in 1849, supplied much original information for subsequent writers. Hepworth Dixon's popular and eloquent Historical Biography, founded on Family and State Papers, did not add much to what was known be fore; but Hazard's Annals of Pennsylvania, 1850. Quaker Ben by Henry C. McCook Pdf

Excerpt from Quaker Ben: A Tale of Colonial Pennsylvania, in the Days of Thomas Penn The period of the administration of Thomas Penn, (1737-1742) in the colony founded by his distinguished father, was one of great historic interest. The infamous "Indian Walk" which led to the cruel and criminal expulsion of the Delaware Indians by their warlike conquerors and masters, the Iroquois, at the instigation of Thomas Penn, was an incident that led to serious consequences. The attack by Great Britain on the Spanish Main in the unfortunate Cartagena campaign, in which the American colonies, with their customary loyalty, heartily joined, was another incident that sorely vexed the peace-loving spirit of the Friends, though it had the co-operation of the belligerent citizens of Penn's colony. The outbreak of the yellow fever in Philadelphia was a third occurrence of the period, which, united with those mentioned, seemed to the author to furnish the elements for an historic romance that would be alike interesting and instructive. Indeed, the entire condition of Pennsylvania and Philadelphia at that particular period, both in the city and on the frontiers, was one of transition, of civil and social and religious evolution that invites the attention of intelligent readers. The great interest expressed by many readers of the author's earlier romance, "The Latimers," in the Scotch-Irishman, Andy Burbeck, suggested his introduction as a boy in "Quaker Ben," with members of his family to furnish the environment in which the lad was developed.
