The Political Economy of Ethiopia by Marina Ottaway Pdf

The essays collected here evolved from a two-day conference on Ethiopia held at the Johns Hopkins School for Advanced International Studies. Written by both academics and Ethiopians who have participated personally in the events they discuss, the papers describe and interpret the Ethiopian revolution and explore its successes, failures, and intrinsic qualities. The contributors express a variety of viewpoints and approaches to the current crisis situation in Ethiopia, demonstrating that although the 15-year revolution has failed to measurably improve the lot of Ethiopians, Ethiopia's history, demographics, and climate have also been important contributing factors. A number of articles deal with aspects of the political crisis while others analyze the economic crisis, looking at present problems and their historical roots. Taken together, these essays make a major contribution to our understanding of the persistent problems faced by Ethiopia today. Following the editor's introduction, the volume is divided into three sections. In Part I, four papers explore the Ethiopian state and the problem of power. Individual chapters examine such issues as change and continuity in Ethiopian politics, decisions and elections, and the question of rural transformation. Part II looks at different facets of the national question, now or in the past--the character of the leadership, the concept of government, and the decision-making process. The third section analyzes the current economic crisis in two papers which discuss Ethiopia's agricultural crisis and development strategy. The concluding chapter presents an overall perspective on revolution, nationality, and the Ethiopian state. Students of political economy, African studies, and economic development will find The Political Economy of Ethiopia illuminating reading.

The Political Economy of an African Society in Tranformation: the Case of Macca Oromo (Ethiopia) by Tesema Ta'a Pdf

The official historiography of the Ethiopian Empire as well as the majority of the publications on Ethiopian history by European authors used to view the country as a single cultural whole, and to deal only with the history of the Christian empire. The different historical experiences of the Ethiopian multiethnic society and culture used to be usually ignored. In contrast to such one-sided approach this book deals with the Macca Oromo activities, social transformation and historical experiences in the western part of Central Ethiopia, focusing on the political economy of the region. The sources for the book include: 1. written documents in Ethiopian languages (Amharic and Ge'ez), e.g. archival materials, 2. reports by European travellers and missionaries, 3. recent secondary literature, and 4. traditions and oral history collected mainly in Wallagga in 1972-73 and 1979-80. In that region the Macca states had played an important political and economical role until they were subjugated by the order of Menelik II and incorporated into the Ethiopian Empire at the end of the 19th century. Tesema Ta'a belongs to the first generation of the Ethiopian historiographers who graduated from Addis Ababa University in the seventies, and later formed the teaching staff of the History department in Addis Ababa.

The Political Economy of Land and Agrarian Development in Ethiopia by Ketebo Abdiyo Ensene Pdf

Located in central Ethiopia, the Arssi region is one of the most productive in Ethiopia yet it has so far been neglected by scholars. This book scrutinizes the rural development of Arssi by focusing on the Swedish supported experimental venture known as the Chilalo Agricultural Development Unit (CADU) and later as the Arssi Rural Development Unit (ARDU). Ketebo Abdiyo Ensene investigates how effectively this strategy empowered the peasantry to change their farming techniques and produce beyond subsistence level. He also examines the accumulation of alienated land by the northern Ethiopian nobility through land grants, fake purchases, and other futile means of land grabs and the impact that this had on the native population. Finally, the book reassess the importance of the rural land reform of 1975 that followed the collapses of the imperial regime and argues that this was the most significant event in the history of agricultural development in Ethiopia. The assessment of the book in fact goes into the post-1991 period in relation with agrarian development. The Political Economy of Land and Agrarian Development in Ethiopia will be of interest to scholars of Ethiopia, African Studies, economic history, political economy, development and agriculture.

Chronicles on the Political Economy of Plunder in Ethiopia (1991-2018) by Ayele Gelan Pdf

ETHIOPIA'S MIRACULOUS ECONOMIC GROWTH THAT NEVER WAS This book brings together twenty five articles that have been written on Ethiopia's current affairs during the country's latest popular unrest (2013-2018). Regardless of the timing of the commentaries, the contents of most pieces reflect circumstances that have prevailed during the reign of the EPRDF (1991-2018). The primarily motive for the writings was to seek answer to the burning issue of Ethiopia's troubled years: what cumulative policy blunders the EPRDF government was making all along to end up with such catastrophic outcomes? Human rights organizations, political activists and opposition parties have done a reasonably good job in scrutinizing and exposing EPRDF's undemocratic governance and gross human right abuses. However, EPRDF's economic policies have always been analyzed in the most unsatisfactory and even bizare ways. In order to fill this gap, economic policy matters were the focus of almost all of the articles contained in this book. The international community was baffled by the popular uprising that errupted in 2015 in Oromia and then spread to all corners of Ethiopia like a forest fire. Until then the prevailing storyline was that Ethiopia was experiencing a miraculous economic growth. But if Ethiopia's economy was really growing at double digit rate per annum for over a decade, then why have Ethiopians in all walks of life protested so vigorously? The existence of draconian press laws meant domestic print and broadcast media were decimated long before the protest years. Personal safety or geopolitical concerns meant foreign correspondents were simply unwilling or unable to even begin to scratch the surface, never mind capturing the nuances of EPRDF's deceptive economic growth rhetoric. There were times when foreign correspondents even resorted to using simplistic indicators, such as high rise buildings in Addis Ababa, to pass judgment on Ethiopians overall economic performance. Dismayed and somewhat frustrated by the gross misinformation regarding EPRDF's economy policies, the author started to write articles and contribute to print and online media to bring some rigor to the debate.

State and Economic Development in Africa by Aaron Tesfaye Pdf

This book critically assesses the impact of Ethiopia’s policy of Agriculture Development Led Industrialization. Employing qualitative and quantitative analysis, it presents empirical evidence suggesting persistent economic growth. The research highlights improvements in infrastructure, health care, education, poverty alleviation as well reductions in infant mortality rate. The impact of this economic growth has however had led to only slight improvements in the plight of the poor. The author argues that, while significant steps have been achieved with measurable economic gains, there are still undeniable obstacles within the federal system: prevailing patron-client relationships, constraints on state capacity to efficiently and effectively implement policy, and bureaucratic rent-seeking in the provision of public goods. The author concludes that these problems will have to be resolved before Ethiopia’s political economy can achieve the stage of sustainable development

The Political Economy of Post 1991 Ethiopia by Habtamu Demiessie Pdf

The line of political and economic governance being pursued by Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF), a political party that has been ruling Ethiopia since 1991, is a mix of ideological continnum - Socialism and Capitalism. As revolutionary democracy is a new concept in the ontology of Ethiopian politics, also due to limited academic interventions on the topic so far, clarity on the issue is largely lacking. However, the ideals of revolutionary democracy embodied some unique elements whose importance goes beyond just a one party political program. For one, understanding the concept of revolutionary democracy amounts understanding the political economy of Ethiopia in the past quarter of a century since 1991. Two, an indepth look into the very essence of revolutionary democracy tells a lot about the very nature of the prevailing political system (tradition) in Ethiopian context. Third, the revolutionary democratic concept entails a lot for academicians and researchers, particularly to those whose interest goes into political and economic governance and federalism studies.Having such importances, however, the concept has not been a topic of interest in the academic and research circles. Therefore, a probe into the essence of revolutionary democratic concept not only shades light or clarifies on one of the blurred concepts in the contemporary Ethiopian politics, but also help cleanse one of the evils of Ethiopian political system, which is the way political groups are evaluated, often biased and/or stereotypic. The built up of this book rests upon addressing the aforementioned issues. Hence, a critical analysis on the theory and practices of revolutionary democracy takes the pillar of narratives. In doing so, the book sticks to standard tools prescribed in the literature while making ideological critic and/or examining a particular school of thought. From theoretical standpoint, the book explores on the genesis and development of ideals of revolutionary democracy; examines the discourses on the concept in the political and academic circles; explores the local and global realities, contexts and dynamics that have great deal of importance in shaping the course of theoretical (conceptual) construction and practical applications of revolutionary democracy; make inferences on ideals (tenets), unique features and possible implications out of theoretical and practical perspectives of revolutionary democracy; forefronts the lasting contributions in the sphere of political and economic governance in general. The book also tries to infer on the methodological and/or approaches embodied in developing revolutionary democratic concept. From practical perspective, the book examines the course of political and bureaucratic governance of Ethiopia in the past quarter of century since 1991. It also gives a looks into the institutional, ideological, and/or constitutional elements in lieu of exercising ideals of revolutionary democracy (by EPRDF led government). The book further examines and forefront on possible pros & cons, relevance and/or compatibility of revolutionary democratic teachings - in light of local and global context (realities)- in the sphere of governance and public life in the past, present and future Ethiopia.

The Oxford Handbook of the Ethiopian Economy by Fantu Cheru,Christopher Cramer,Arkebe Oqubay Pdf

From a war-torn and famine-plagued country at the beginning of the 1990s, Ethiopia is today emerging as one of the fastest-growing economies in Africa. Growth in Ethiopia has surpassed that of every other sub-Saharan country over the past decade and is forecast by the International Monetary Fund to exceed 8 percent over the next two years. The government has set its eyes on transforming the country into a middle-income country by 2025, and into a leading manufacturing hub in Africa. The Oxford Handbook of the Ethiopian Economy studies this country's unique model of development, where the state plays a central role, and where a successful industrialization drive has challenged the long-held erroneous assumption that industrial policy will never work in poor African countries. While much of the volume is focused on post-1991 economic development policy and strategy, the analysis is set against the background of the long history of Ethiopia, and more specifically on the Imperial period that ended in 1974, the socialist development experiment of the Derg regime between 1974 and 1991, and the policies and strategies of the current EPRDF government that assumed power in 1991. Including a range of contributions from both academic and professional standpoints, this volume is a key reference work on the economy of Ethiopia.
