The Political Status of Women in the United States by Bertha Rembaugh Pdf

Excerpt from The Political Status of Women in the United States: A Digest of the Laws Concerning Women in the Various States and Territories On January 20, 1910, the Conference of Governors at their meeting at the National Capital extended to a committee of The Women's Political Union the privilege of presenting to their honorable body the following appeal: To the Conference of Governors: "As one of the objects of your Conference is to establish in the separate states uniform legislation upon those questions which seem to demand a national policy, yet in regard to which federal action is impossible or inadvisable, we, a committee of women from the State of New York, feel that it will not be out of place to suggest that the political position of women in the several states is a question worthy of your most earnest consideration. This question, like the others with which your Conference will deal, is not likely to be settled nationally, but will, in the future as in the past, be entirely a matter of State action. "It is also a question which because of lack of uniformity in the electoral laws of the several states causes discontent in a large body of our citizens. No other laws in the separate states stand in greater contrast than those dealing with the political rights of women. Women and Cartography in the Progressive Era by Christina E. Dando Pdf

In the twenty-first century we speak of a geospatial revolution, but over one hundred years ago another mapping revolution was in motion. Women’s lives were in motion: they were playing a greater role in public on a variety of fronts. As women became more mobile (physically, socially, politically), they used and created geographic knowledge and maps. The maps created by American women were in motion too: created, shared, distributed as they worked to transform their landscapes. Long overlooked, this women’s work represents maps and mapping that today we would term community or participatory mapping, critical cartography and public geography. These historic examples of women-generated mapping represent the adoption of cartography and geography as part of women’s work. While cartography and map use are not new, the adoption and application of this technology and form of communication in women’s work and in multiple examples in the context of their social work, is unprecedented. This study explores the implications of women’s use of this technology in creating and presenting information and knowledge and wielding it to their own ends. This pioneering and original book will be essential reading for those working in Geography, Gender Studies, Women’s Studies, Politics and History.

Feminist Activism in the Supreme Court by Christopher P. Manfredi Pdf

Since 1980, the Canadian women's movement has been an active participant in consitutional politics and Charter litigation. This book, through its focus on the Women's Legal Education and Action Fund (LEAF), presents a compelling examination of how Canadian feminists became key actors in developing the constitutional doctrine of equality, and how they mobilized that doctrine to support the movement's policy agenda. The case of LEAF, an organization that has as its goal the use of Charter litigation to influence legal rules and public policy, provides rich ground for Christopher Manfredi's keen analysis of legal mobilization. In a multitude of areas such as abortion, pornography, sexual assault, family law, and gay and lesbian rights, LEAF has intervened before the Supreme Court to bring its understanding of equality to bear on legal policy development. This study offers a deft examination of LEAF's arguments and seeks to understand how they affected the Court's consideration of the issues. Perhaps most important, it also contemplates the long-term effects of the mobilization, and considers the social impact of the legal doctrine that has emerged from LEAF cases. A major contribution to law and society studies, Feminist Activism in the Supreme Court is unparalleled in its analysis of legal mobilization as an effective strategy for social movements. It will be widely read and welcomed by legal scholars, political scientists, lawyers, feminists, and activists.
