The Great Houses of London by David Pearce Pdf
The Great Houses of London is an account of extraordinary buildings, most of which no longer exist, of such great designers as Robert Adam, and of the enormously rich English aristocratic grandees who commissioned these houses. When Queen Victoria remarked to her neighbor, the Duchess of Sutherland, I have come from my house to your palace, she was by no means exaggerating. The palaces of the nobility were second only to churches in architectural and aesthetic significance, and defied comparison with the chateaux of France or the palazzi of Venice. Filled with astonishing French and English furniture, generally equipped with a large private picture gallery to display priceless paintings bought on the Grand Tour, staffed by between 50 and 60 servants, these houses expressed the taste and aspiration of a single person, and usually one rich and powerful enough to have his own way. A distinguished designer, large rooms for entertaining formally, an imposing facade to impress passers by and visitors were the background for the endless balls and costume and garden parties, and formal dinners that made the dazzling London Season one of the high points for European royalty and society from June through August. This book, the only publication on a fascinating subject, covers some 40 major home and 100 lesser ones, starting in the 13th century in the walled city of London and moving on to the then suburbs of Bloomsbury, Holborn, Soho, Piccadilly and St. James, finishing in Park Lane from which the aristocrats were driven by the noises of motor traffic. This is a book that will fascinate architects, decorators, Anglophiles and social historians.

German Architecture and the Classical Ideal by David Watkin,Tilman Mellinghoff Pdf
German Classicism is a powerful architectural force that is only now being fully studied. As this extensively illustrated book shows, palaces, private houses, public buildings, and urban planning all received patronage on a scale that could not be paralleled in other countries. Of the host of architects whose genius was given such superb opportunities in the years 1740 to 1840, only Karl Freidrich Schinkel's name has become widely known; yet this book points out, all over Germany rulers were dramatically transforming their capitals, and the achievements of Weinbrenner at Karlsruhe, Moller at Darmstadt, or Klenze at Munich are by any standards astonishing. The first part of the book is by David Watkin, a leading British authority on the Classical Revival. He provides a historical account that sets German Neoclassicism in its regional and political context, and notes the impact of France and England and the Franco-Prussian style before Schinkel. He discusses Schinkel's own work, that of Leo von Klenze, and Neoclassicism in North and South Germany. The book's second part consists of an index of buildings prepared by Tilman Mellinghoff. Here every important Neoclassical building (both existing and destroyed) is listed and described under its location. The index is an invaluable source of information available nowhere else in English. David Watkin is a Fellow of Peterhouse and a University Lecturer in History of Art at Cambridge University. Tilman Mellinghoff is an Assistant Lecturer at the Universities of Cologne and Bonn.

Stroganoff by Penelope Stiebel-Hunter Pdf
"Lavishly illustrated with more than two hundred works, this book chronicles the history of the Stroganoff family and its collections. From icons, embroideries, and richly decorated Russian stonework to exquisite paintings and decorative objects produced in western Europe, these works of art, most of them never before reproduced, represent the highest level of quality and reflect the discerning taste of the Stroganoffs as both collectors and patrons. Of special interest are the architectural designs of Andrei Voronikhin, a Stroganoff protege whose influence can still be seen in St. Petersburg today." "This book, published to accompany an exhibition opening at the Portland Art Museum, Oregon, provides an opportunity to understand how one family helped to shape the culture of a nation." --Book Jacket.
