'The Prairie Mother' is a novel written by Arthur Stringer. The book begins as a woman wakes up to find themselves in unfamiliar surroundings, with the doctor giving them chloroform. She drifts into unconsciousness and forgets about the pain and unpleasantness of the delivery process. As she briefly comes to consciousness, she hears faint voices and the beating of a tom-tom, before the sound of a baby's cry makes them open their eyes.

There are a lot of things in this life, I remembered, which woman is able to squirm out of. But here, Mistress Tabbie, was one you couldnÕt escape. Here was a situation that had to be faced. Here was a time I had to knuckle down, had to grin and bear it, had to go through with it to the bitter end. For other folks, whatever they may be able to do for you, arenÕt able to have your babies for you.
