Bridging the Gap, Breaching Barriers by Mary Carol Cloutier Pdf

From its very beginning, in June 1842, the Protestant Mission in Gabon included men and women of African descent--African Americans, Americo-Liberians, and West Africans--all teachers and advanced students from the Cape Palmas (Liberia) Mission, who transferred with the mission to its new location on the Gaboon estuary. All came voluntarily and wholeheartedly. They served as teachers, evangelists, preachers, and printers, building the early foundation of Christianity in Gabon. Many eventually returned to their homelands, but others stayed for the duration of their lives, assimilating into the local community. This book celebrates the contribution of persons of African descent who served with the mission from 1834 until 1891, a time of complex and controversial race relations in America, which seeped into mission relations overseas. Private missionary correspondence and journals reveal the interrelationships, roles, and contributions of these individuals, and also the underlying perceptions of nationality, race, and gender. One must grieve the injustices evident in the stories, yet marvel at the giftedness, faith, determination and commitment of those who served, often with no official recognition. I introduce you to Mr. B. V. R. James, Lavinia Sneed, Charity Sneed Menkel, Mary Harding, and others--may their stories inspire you!

Recovering the Piedmont Past by Timothy P. Grady,Melissa Walker Pdf

The history of South Carolina’s lowcountry has been well documented by historians, but the upcountry—the region of the state north and west of Columbia and the geologic fall line—has only recently begun to receive extensive scholarly attention. The essays in this collection provide a window into the social and cultural life of the upstate during the nineteenth century. The contributors explore topics ranging from the history of education in the region to the pugnacity of the Scots-Irish, from post–Civil War occupation by Union troops to upcountry tourism, from the Freedman’s Bureau’s efforts to educate African Americans to the complex dynamics of lynch mobs in the late nineteenth century. Recovering the Piedmont Past illustrates larger trends of social transformation occurring in the region at a time that shaped religion, education, race relations and the economy well into the twentieth century. The essays add depth and complexity to our understanding of nineteenth century southern history and challenge accepted narratives about a homogeneous South. Ultimately each of the eight essays explores little known facets of the history of upcountry South Carolina in the nineteenth century. The collection includes a foreword by Orville Vernon Burton, professor of history and director of the Cyberinstitute at Clemson University.

The Presbyterian Monthly Record of the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America, 1884, Vol. 35 by Presbyterian Church In The U. S. A. Pdf

Excerpt from The Presbyterian Monthly Record of the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America, 1884, Vol. 35: Being the Organ of the Boards of Home Missions, Education, Foreign Missions, Publication, Church Erection, Relief for Disabled Ministers, Missions for Freedmen, and Aid for Colleges and Academies This magazine is the property and the organ of our eight Boards. Five of these Boards have no other regular means of reaching the churches through the press. They all need this publication, as repre senting each its own and all their common interests. No one of the Boards can stand alone, nor pursue an exclusive course; but all make one family, and ought to help each other, among other ways, in the use of a common periodical. Moreover, in many hundreds of our churches it is convenient, and in many cases indispensable that the objects of all the Boards should be advocated in the same magazine; otherwise they would not be reached at all by means of the printed page. The contents of this magazine are of real value, not for sensational articles, nor for miscellaneous matters in all lines of reading, but for information concerning the home and foreign work of the Church, thereby keeping before our people these varied interests of our Saviour's cause. There is not a single number but contains very valuable articles, indeed not seldom papers and notices of deep and touching interest; and many of them are from the best pens of the times in which we live. In them we find papers from all our Boards which ought to be read by thousands of our people, and by all our ministers, many of which would go straight to their hearts. Search and see. A People Called Cumberland Presbyterians by Ben M. Barrus,Milton L. Baughn,Thomas H. Campbell Pdf

Light on a people's forward path comes from behind - from the past. Because Cumberland Presbyterians are eager for illumination for their ongoing mission this set of books have been written. In ÒA People Called Cumberland PresbyteriansÓ three writers have endeavored to directly and effectively present the convictions, dedication and purpose that formed this Presbyterian denomination on the American frontier and have impelled it through more than 160 years to the present. The books illuminate some of the most distinctive traits of the church. Many persons and events come to life in it. Not only the better known heroes and heroines of the movement are presented, but also many of the lesser known who play colorful and significant roles, and details typical of the ongoing life of the church are here, along with accounts of the stirring hours of its history.
