The World of Labour by G. D. H. Cole Pdf

Excerpt from The World of Labour: A Discussion of the Present and Future of Trade Unionism World, there is a growing movement of unrest, and new forces seem to be arising inside the American Federa tion of Labour to challenge the ascendency of Mr. Samuel Gompers. Lastly, in this country, the economic and industrial situation has fundamentally changed, and, even in the midst of the political triumphs of reaction, Labour is revealing in the economic field a new sense of power against which political forces are too weak to stand. The Future of Trades-Unionism and Capitalism in a Democracy (Classic Reprint) by Charles W Eliot Pdf

Excerpt from The Future of Trades-Unionism and Capitalism in a Democracy This endowment is the gift of Joseph H. Larwill of the Class of 1855. The object of the endowment is to provide at Gambier for the members of Kenyon College occasional lectures of general interest and also at least once in two years a formal academic course to be published by the Foundation. The donor imposed few conditions, leaving the administration of the Fund and appointments to the Lectureship in charge of the Faculty of Kenyon College. The Fund was given in 1907 and a number of occasional lectures have since been delivered. These lectures by President Eliot, delivered at Kenyon College October 25 and 27, 1909, constitute the first formal course published by the Foundation. Trade Union Law (Classic Reprint) by Henry H. Slesser Pdf

Excerpt from Trade Union Law The legal problems which the subject of Trade Unionism produces are considerable. In the first place, the Trade Union shares with other voluntary societies that ambiguous intermediate region between the individual and the corporation which the law has so tentatively defined; secondly, the common law doctrine of restraint of trade and conspiracy have given a fundamental taint of illegality to Trade Union activity which the statute law has not entirely succeeded in removing; thirdly, both the judicial decisions and the legislation (the latter often reversing the former) are so conflicting and difficult to reconcile, that in many cases they have but made confusion worse confounded. Moreover, recent decisions on the legal position of commercial combinations as Trade Unions show that Trade Union Law is destined to have great developments in a region hardly contemplated by the framers of the Act of 1871 - developments which it may be predicted are likely in the future to have very far-reaching effects. American Trade Unionism (Classic Reprint) by George M. Janes Pdf

Excerpt from American Trade Unionism HE aim of this little book is to present as clearly as possible within the space allowed the salient features of American trade-unionism. Like all social movements which excite the hopes and fears of men, trade-unionism has more often been the oh ject of passionate denunciation or defense than of scientific inquiry. But whether we like it or not the organized labor movement in some form has evidently come to stay. There are no labor problems in a backward country like Turkey, where repression and not expression is the rule. The trade-union movement is at least an expression of life and a desire for some thing better on the part of the laborer, and that is one reason among others why it is found in advanced industrial countries like England and the United States. Differences of opinion concerning most sub jects are usually the result of ignorance, and definite knowledge concerning any subject is at least the beginning Of wisdom. National Guilds by S. G. Hobson Pdf

Excerpt from National Guilds: An Inquiry Into the Wage System, and the Way Out The substance of the following chapters appeared serially in The New Age during the years 1912-13. But for the origin of the idea on the Guilds as applied to modern industry an earlier date would have to be sought. Both the present Editor of The New Age in an article in the Contemporary Review of 1906, and Mr. A. J. Penty in his work on The Restoration of the Guild System of the same year, had put forward the suggestion that the Guild organisation was indispensable to higher industry at any rate. But whereas Mr. Penty confined his proposals to the mere restoration of the mediæval guild, without regard to modern conditions, it was in The New Age, during the period 1906-12, that the idea of the national guild was first brought into relation both with historical and with recent economic development. And the present work, the first ever published on the subject, is the outcome of that period. The tide of Collectivism, however, was then and for some years afterwards too powerful to admit of even the smallest counter-current. Some experience of Collectivism in action and of political methods as distinct from economic methods was necessary before the mind of the Labour movement could be turned in another direction. This was brought about by the impulse known as Syndicalism which, in essence, is the demand of Labour to control its industry. The authors deliver a comprehensive analysis of trade unions’ prospects in the new millennium as well as case studies which deal with topical issues such as: the reasons for the loss of five million members in the 1980s and 1990s the way in which unions’ own structures inhibit their revitalization the apparent failure of unions to thrive in the benign times since 1997 the extent to which use of the internet will permit unions to break with their tradition of organizing by occupation or industry the prospects for real social partnership at national level the way in which high performance workplaces in the US give voice to workers without unions. Written by some of the leading scholars in the area, this book gives an insight into union prospects for the future and has important policy implications for all parties concerned with industrial relations, unions, employers and governments.

Organized Labor by John Mitchell Pdf

Excerpt from Organized Labor: Its Problems, Purposes and Ideals and the Present and Future of American Wage Earners Labor unions are for the workman, but against no one. They are not hostile to employers, not inimical to the interests of the general public. They are for a class, because that class exists and has class interests, but the unions did not create and do not perpetuate the class or its interests and do not seek to evoke a class conflict. The Economics of Trade Unions by Hristos Doucouliagos,Richard B. Freeman,Patrice Laroche Pdf

Richard B. Freeman and James L. Medoff’s now classic 1984 book What Do Unions Do? stimulated an enormous theoretical and empirical literature on the economic impact of trade unions. Trade unions continue to be a significant feature of many labor markets, particularly in developing countries, and issues of labor market regulations and labor institutions remain critically important to researchers and policy makers. The relations between unions and management can range between cooperation and conflict; unions have powerful offsetting wage and non-wage effects that economists and other social scientists have long debated. Do the benefits of unionism exceed the costs to the economy and society writ large, or do the costs exceed the benefits? The Economics of Trade Unions offers the first comprehensive review, analysis and evaluation of the empirical literature on the microeconomic effects of trade unions using the tools of meta-regression analysis to identify and quantify the economic impact of trade unions, as well as to correct research design faults, the effects of selection bias and model misspecification. This volume makes use of a unique dataset of hundreds of empirical studies and their reported estimates of the microeconomic impact of trade unions. Written by three authors who have been at the forefront of this research field (including the co-author of the original volume, What Do Unions Do?), this book offers an overview of a subject that is of huge importance to scholars of labor economics, industrial and employee relations, and human resource management, as well as those with an interest in meta-analysis.

Left Wing Trade Unionism in France by Pierre Monatte Pdf

Excerpt from Left Wing Trade Unionism in France: Containing Reflections on the Future of French Trade Unionism Pierre Monatte, the leader of the revolutionary minority in the French Trade Union Movement, is here presented to English readers for, I think, the first time. And through none of his own earnest and noble utterances could he be better introduced than through these war-lime speculations on the future of Labour in France. Written by candlelight in the trenches, or in some noisy rest billet behind the lines, these articles reflect marvellously the serene spirit of this man who could so forget the present battle for the mightier conflict to come; so shrewdly prophetic they seem to us now, and in language so simple, moving and friendly, like his own personality.
