The Principles Elementary Mechanics (Classic Reprint) by De Volson Wood Pdf

Excerpt from The Principles Elementary Mechanics This work is especially designed to treat of the principles of Rational Mechanics, and not to present a system of analysis. The analysis employed in the demonstration of principles is of an elementary character, the Calculus being entirely avoided. A few problems are solved which very properly belong to the Calculus, but the solutions have been effected by means of the well-known properties of certain curves and the principles of elementary geometry. As examples of this mode of reasoning, reference is made to the following problems: The determination of the centre of gravity of a circular arc; The time of vibration of a simple pendulum; and The quantity of flow of a liquid through a weir. A few problems are solved which involve a knowledge of Conic Sections, but these may be omitted, if desired, without detriment to the other portions of the work. The Articles are as independent of each other as they can be practically, and at the same time present the subject in a connected manner. This feature will enable the teacher the more easily to select particular portions of the work when the whole cannot be taken. The Principles of Mechanics, Vol. 1 by Frederick Slate Pdf

Excerpt from The Principles of Mechanics, Vol. 1: An Elementary Exposition, for Students of Physics The following chapters may be arranged in two groups, and the first of these (chapters I - V) is devoted continu ously to building up knowledge of the necessary concep tions, and unfolding their content. It is believed that such a plan will foster in students who use the book some quality of precision and method in statement, while it accustoms them to follow a sustained argument. If re sults like these are not attained by those who cultivate the science of Mechanics, the benefits of their study are but half reaped. The ninth and tenth chapters are given up mainly to auxiliary discussions on Centre of Mass, Moment of Inertia, and Dimensions; leaving three chap ters in that group (chapters VI - VIII) for the usual range of applications. This has been covered with a fair degree of thoroughness; and the problems constitute at the same time a collection of varied illustrations, by means of which the general principles can be elucidated and enforced. Excerpt from The Elementary Principles of Mechanics, Vol. 3: Kinetics The plan and method of presentation of this work are the result of many years of teaching experience. It has worked well in the hands of the author and has grown into its present form gradually, in response to the needs of student and teacher. It would seem therefore not unreasonable to hope that it may be of service to others in similar circumstances and with Similar needs. The Elementary Principles of Mechanics, Vol. 1 by A. Jay Du Bois Pdf

Excerpt from The Elementary Principles of Mechanics, Vol. 1: Kinematics Thus we recognize matter in certain states which we call solid, liquid or gaseous. We distinguish also different kinds of matter, such as iron, wood, glass, water, air, etc., which we call substances. We also recognize limited portions of matter of definite shape and volume, such as a pebble, a rain - drop, a planet, etc., which we call material bodies. But what matter is in itself we do not know. Elementary Mechanics (Classic Reprint) by J. B. Phear Pdf

Excerpt from Elementary Mechanics A few years' experience, both as Student and as Tutor, has led me to a grateful appreciation of the method of teach ing which is at present pursued by our University; one of the highest aims of which is to promote habits of rapid and accurate thought, and in this it is eminently successful. But the nature of the training adopted for this purpose has proved injurious to the style of our Mathematical Literature, more especially in the department of Natural Philosophy. Our educational books of Natural Science, in seeking to fulfil the requirements of the senate-house, have become mere collections of definite propositions; generally containing, it is true, all the known facts and the mathematical deductions dependent upon them which appertain to the respective subjects, but seldom offering the smallest relief to the barren ness which is incidental to such compositions: in this shape they have lost all the fulness and freshness of life; all popular illustration, all freedom of expression has been denied them; they have been deprived, in fact, of nearly all the charms that usually render the pursuit of science fascinating to the young. The Theory of Machines by Robert W. Angus Pdf

Excerpt from The Theory of Machines: The Principles of Mechanism; Elementary Mechanics of Machines The present treatise dealing with the Principles of Mechanism and Mechanics of Machinery is the result of a number of years' experience in teaching the subjects and in practising engineering, and endeavors to deal with problems of fairly common occur rence. It is intended to cover the needs of the beginner in the study of the science of machinery, and also to take up a number of the advanced problems in mechanics. As the engineer uses the drafting board very freely in the solution of his problems, the author has devised graphical solu tions throughout, and only in a very few instances has he used formulae involving anything more than elementary trigonometry and algebra. The two or three cases involving the calculus may be omitted without detracting much from the usefulness of the book. The reader must remember that the book does not deal with machine design, and as the drawings have been made for the special purpose of illustrating the principles under discussion, the mechanical details have frequently been omitted, and in cer tain cases the proportions somewhat modified so as to make the constructions employed clearer. Excerpt from Theory of Machines: Including the Principles of Mechanism and Elementary Mechanics of Machinery In the making of machines. However. It is necessary to know the effect of changing the length and position of a link. For example. The effect of lengthening the connecting rod of a steam engine and of off-setting the cylinder. Again the effect of changing the shapes of gear teeth and also the determination of the correct shape are matters of the greatest importance. Elementary Principles in Statistical Mechanics by J. Willard Gibbs Pdf

Excerpt from Elementary Principles in Statistical Mechanics: Developed With Special Reference to the Rational Foundations of Thermodynamics The laws of thermodynamics, as empirically determined, express the approximate and probable behavior of systems of a great number of particles, or, more precisely, they express the laws of mechanics for such systems as they appear to beings who have not the fineness of perception to enable them to appreciate quantities of the order of magnitude of those which relate to single particles, and who cannot repeat their experiments often enough to obtain any but the most probable results. The laws of statistical mechanics apply to conservative systems of any number of degrees of freedom. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A Short Course in Elementary Mechanics for Engineers (Classic Reprint) by Clifford Newton Mills Pdf

Excerpt from A Short Course in Elementary Mechanics for Engineers The subject matter is divided into three parts, namely, Kinematics, Kinetics, and Statics. Much detailed discussion is omitted, and the course is written from the definition viewpoint. In considering the working principles of Statics, much emphasis is placed on the importance of moment equations. The Engineer's system of units is used. Throughout the text are many problems, a large number of these being original. In fact, it is by solving problems that a mastery of the subject is gained. Many of the problems will not be difficult to solve, but others will require the student's best effort. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
