The Principles of Floriculture by Edward A. White Pdf

Excerpt from The Principles of Floriculture Instruction in flower-growing has been given in American educational institutions for many years. Early in its history such instruction was a part of the curriculum of general horticulture, lectures in floriculture being given by those engaged in teaching other branches. Within the last ten years there has been, a breaking up of general horticultural instruction. Separate departments of pomology, market-gardening, and floriculture have been created, and each is supervised by one who devotes his entire time to his special subject. Floricultural education, as a distinct and separate department, is, therefore, of comparatively recent origin. Because of this, there are few precedents, and the courses given have resulted from the experiences of comparatively few men. The material here presented has been compiled largely from the author's lectures. The book is, therefore, the outgrowth of experience and general observations. Branches of the subject which seemed unimportant, and methods of teaching which proved ineffective, have been eliminated, and only those phases retained which have appeared to meet the needs of students. In the author's experience in teaching distinctly floricultural subjects, he has felt the need of a text-book. There are good books on special topics but no one work that treats of the general principles of flower-growing. Principles of Plant Culture by E. S. Goff Pdf

Excerpt from Principles of Plant Culture: An Elementary Treatise Designed as a Text-Book for Beginners in Agriculture and Horiculture At the University of Wisconsin his work was success ful and well appreciated. For this preface, Dr. W. A. Henry, formerly Dean of the College of Agriculture there and now Professor Emeritus, makes the following appreciative statement: Professor Goff held no college diploma, but he was a trained scientist nevertheless, and a gentleman of the highest type. He combined the qualities of a real investigator with those of a delightful teacher. He was loved by all. He grew into his strength under the guidance of Sturtevant at the New York [geneva] Experiment Station in inti mate association with Babcock, Ladd, Plumb, and other worthy associates. Following Babcock to Wisconsin. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Theory of Horticulture by John Lindley Pdf

Excerpt from The Theory of Horticulture: Or an Attempt to Explain the Principal Operations of Gardening Upon Physiological Principles But these are the refinements of science, belonging to the philosopher in his laboratory, and not to the worker in gardens; they are indispensable to the correct appreciation of physiological phenomena, but not to the application Of those phenomena to the arts Of life electricity, in particular, appears to me, in the present imperfect state of our knowledge Of its relation to vegetable functions, altogether incapable Of forming a part of any horticultural theory. The Evolution of Horticulture in New England (Classic Reprint) by Daniel Denison Slade Pdf

Excerpt from The Evolution of Horticulture in New England They do but submit to the great law of nature, which declares that all sublunary shapes of matter shall be limited in their duration, but which decrees, also, that their elements shall never perish. Generation alter generation, both in animal and vegetable life, passes away, but the vital principle is transmitted to posterity, and the species continue to flourish. Thus, also, do authors beget authors, and having produced a numerous progeny, in a good old age they sleep with their fathers, that is to say, with the authors who preceded them - and from whom they had stolen.' Practical Floriculture by Peter Henderson Pdf

Excerpt from Practical Floriculture: A Guide to the Successful Cultivation of Florists' Plants, for the Amateur and Professional Florist I am often asked the question if it is necessary in order to become a florist to enter some large establishment for a few years, or whether it is possible to learn from reading only. I reply, if it can be afforded, it will be best, by all means, to serve at least two years in some well-conducted establishment - one that has been long enough established to have made the business a suc cess, for the best index of ability in any business is suc cess. I have said, if it can be afforded, as for the first two years, unless a youth proves himself unusually smart, he will not likely receive more than enough to pay his board, for he is simply an apprentice under instructions, who has come with the design of leaving when he has acquired a knowledge of the trade, and just at the time when he begins to be of use to his employer. A Concise Application of the Principles of Structural Botany to Horticulture by James E. Teschemacher Pdf

Excerpt from A Concise Application of the Principles of Structural Botany to Horticulture: Chiefly Extracted From the Works of Lindley, Knight, Herbert and Others, With Additions and Adaptations to This Climate It is supposed by some that the introduction of oxygen into their system is as indispensable to them as to animals. It seems more probable that the oxygen of the atmosphere, combining with a certain quan tity Of carbon, forms carbonic acid, which they absorb and feed upon. It is at least certain that the exclusion of air from the roots will always induce an unhealthy condition, or even death itself. This may be one Of the reasons why stiff, clayey, tenacious soils are so seldom suited to the purposes of the cultivator, until their adhesiveness has been destroyed by the addition of other matter, such as sand or manure. Principles of Plant Physiology (Classic Reprint) by Oran Raber Pdf

Excerpt from Principles of Plant Physiology During the past five years since the first edition of this book appeared, it has met with more favor in the eyes of teachers and students of the subject than the author (or the publishers) had anticipated even in the most sanguine moments. But during those five years much phytophysiological water has passed under the botanical bridge. Once again has come the task of deciding what matter shall be included and what shall not. There is also the question of maintaining the book within a reasonable size. N o self-respecting student can be expected to carry an elementary book of more than 500 pages. Most gospels are small; but revisions have a tendency to get bigger and (let us hope) better. An elementary text should be up to date and yet not con tain many disputable data. However, if one included in a text book only those facts to which every plant physiologist subscribed wholeheartedly all of the time, the author would finish with a mere pamphlet. A happy medium must be sought. Whether the teacher professor who reads this will think this golden mean has here been attained, will depend upon his personal predilections and the number of fields in which he is not a specialist. So in this, as in the previous edition, there has been an attempt to hold as much as possible to the essentials of a general, elementary course, bearing in mind that this elementary course may be pre paring the student for courses in horticulture, agronomy, or forestry; for more advanced courses in plant physiology; or for a more appreciative life in the nonprofessional world.
