The Principles of Medicine, Vol. 1 (Classic Reprint) by John M. Scudder Pdf

Excerpt from The Principles of Medicine, Vol. 1 Any variation from the standard of healthy function or structure is disease. Human Physiology is the study of the state and activities of the body in health; Pathology is the study of the state and activities of the body in disease. To study Pathol ogy to advantage, therefore, it is necessary that the student he conversant with the facts and principles of Physiology, and to make a practical application of this knowledge, that he shall have verified those which are cognizable to our senses by per sonal observation. In this manner he establishes in his own mind a standard of comparison, and is enabled to determine variations from this. Excerpt from First Principles of Medicine I found that the former editions were more pleasing to fully educated medical men and men of experience than to the tyro. This was not my original intention; and I have therefore taken pains to render the work more intelligible and useful to the latter, and have added much to suit the taste of both. Excerpt from The Practice of Medicine, Vol. 1 of 2 Thought that too dogmatic a tone has been adopted in the remarks upon the treatment of disease. But more than twenty years of daily observation have given me great confidence in the strength of the general principles which I have tried to inculcate in the fol lowing pages; and being thus zealously impressed, it is difficult (even were it advisable) to do otherwise than Speak positively. Principles of Medicine, and Medicine Without Principle (Classic Reprint) by Elijah de Voe Pdf

Excerpt from Principles of Medicine, and Medicine Without Principle When I first entered upon the duties of a Physician, I was struck by the fact that Medical Practice of all schools was destitute of any reliable principles governing treat ment of disease. That there was no certainty that the treatment of different physicians of any School of Medicine would be based upon the same fundamental ideas in any given case. Physicians of every school are liable to differ in regard to the expression of disease. They are also liable to differ as to treatment, even when they agree in diagnosis, i. E., in the description of disease. As I gained experience in the use of medicines I discovered certain land-marks or principles which have guided me in their application; and I have never known them to betray me. I publish an outline of these principles, because I believe them to be of great value to the public. Although a knowledge of them may not qualify every individual always to dispense with a professional doctor, it may. And should be, a protection against medical imposition; and, furthermore, we deem it but fair that one who finds fault with the practice of others should show a better way. Excerpt from Principles of Pathology and Practice of Medicine The author trusts to the wisdom of Parliament for the speedy enactment of more liberal and equable laws respecting medical edu cation; the adoption of a uniform system for all the schools; and a more rational mode of granting degrees in universities. It is to be hoped that the new institutions, which must, as a matter of course, follow the recently chartered establishment in London for the grant ing of degrees, will be formed upon similar principles. Excerpt from The Principles and Practice of Medicine: In a Series of Essays IN presenting to the 'medical Profession this volume, I Wish it understood that my object is not for the purpose of adding to the list of authors, but from a conviction that some of the causes of our maladies have been overlooked, or have not received the attention which their importance demands; and that several well known remedial agents have fallen into disuse, notwithstanding their value, and the rank they deserve in the cata logue of remedies. The want of arrangement may also require an apology but, as the work is composed of practical essays, complete in them selves, and as I am Without books of reference, I h0pe the authors Whose Opinions I have adopted, and the profession generally, Will excuse the neglect of the courtesies usually bestowed, and the hurried manner with which the work is laid before them. A Short History of Medicine by Charles Joseph Singer Pdf

Excerpt from A Short History of Medicine: Introducing Medical Principles to Students and Non-Medical Readers A work on Medicine must be colored, in some degree, by its author's conception of the nature of Life. On this theme there are divers views, for the full discussion of which there is here no place. The author professes himself, however, an adherent of a school of thought that is not, at present, greatly in fashion. He ranges himself as a vitalist under the banner of Aristotle and as a follower in the goodly company Of Harvey, Hunter and Virchow, of Claude Bernard and Johannes Muller. He believes that there is a principle in living things that cannot be expressed in chemical or physical terms. He believes that this principle works to an intelligible end, that it is an Entelechy, an indwelling purposiveness, and that it is as real a thing as anything that is. Principles and Practice of Medicine (Classic Reprint) by John Charles Peters Pdf

Excerpt from Principles and Practice of Medicine It is highly interesting to observe that Hahnemann instinctively fol lowed the same primary and necessary plan, in studying the effects of remedies, which the primitive physicians were obliged to follow in their first studies of disease. Hahnemann rejected the major part of the materials of all the physicians who preceded him, and as the human mind will always act in the same manner under like circumstances, be naturally took the identical primary and elementary steps, in the study and diagnosis of remedies, which the ancient physicians took in their first studies of disease and its diagnosis.
