"Romaine-la-Prophetesse led a devastating insurgency during the first year of the Haitian Revolution. His advisor was a white French Catholic priest, Abbe Ouviere. This book answers who the priest and the prophetess were, what they achieved, and what their lives tell us about the revolutionary Atlantic world"--
In 1867 forty Irish-Americans sailed for Ireland to fight against British rule. Claiming that emigrants to America remained British citizens, authorities arrested the men for treason, sparking a crisis and trial that dragged the U.S. and Britain to the brink of war. Lucy Salyer recounts this gripping tale, a prelude to today’s immigration battles.
Where Black Rules White by Hesketh Vernon Hesketh-Prichard Pdf
Hesketh Prichard, a popular Edwardian-era English travel writer, sailed to Haiti in 1899 to survey the conditions on the island, the first-ever Black-ruled republic. At the time, it was believed no white man had ventured in that mysterious and closed-off part of the world since 1803, after General Jean-Jacques Dessalines ordered the massacre of all the whites in what was then known as San Domingue. Prichard had opportunity to venture deep into Haiti's interior, unknown at the time, and was first to witness the practice of vaudoux (voodoo). He also narrowly escaped with his life, after an attempt was made to poison him. Prichard's observations, narrated in an exquisitely understated tone, cover every aspect of Haitian society in 1899, ranging from the grotesque to the tragi-comical—indeed, the reader will experience just about every emotion in the human spectrum as he devours this immensely entertaining book. More importantly, Prichard's account explains why Haiti, once one of the most prosperous colonies in the New World, is so profoundly dysfunctional today. It also implicitly explains why the current 'development' paradigm is so profoundly flawed. This annotated 2012 edition comes complete with all the original photographs, an expanded index, and a 50-page introductory essay.
You Can Cross the Massacre on Foot by Freddy Prestol Castillo Pdf
In 1937 tens of thousands of Haitians living in the Dominican Republic were slaughtered by Dominican troops wielding machetes and knives. Dominican writer and lawyer Freddy Prestol Castillo worked on the Haiti-Dominican Republic border during the massacre, known as “The Cutting,” and documented the atrocities in real time in You Can Cross the Massacre on Foot. Written in 1937, published in Spanish in 1973, and appearing here in English for the first time, Prestol Castillo's novel is one of the few works that details the massacre's scale and scope. Conveying the horror of witnessing such inhumane violence firsthand, it is both an attempt to come to terms with personal and collective guilt and a search to understand how people can be driven to indiscriminately kill their neighbors.
