The Prophets and the War (Classic Reprint) by Charles Carroll Albertson Pdf

Excerpt from The Prophets and the War Since August 1, 1914, we have been living in one of the most intense and critical periods of history. It demands no freedom of poetic license to characterize the duration of the World War as "a grand and awful time." There are those who see, on the battlefields of three continents, only a welter of blood, murder set to martial music, an abyssmal tragedy, a riot of destruction. There are others who see all this, and more. They lift their eyes, and through brief breaks in the storm-cloud that hovers over the sky of Christendom, see the stars. The Hebrew prophets in their time caught such glimpses of light in the heavens. They too lived in dark days. Civilization, as they knew it, seemed again and again upon the brink of hopeless ruin. A Prophecy of the War (1913-1914) (Classic Reprint) by Lewis Einstein Pdf

Excerpt from A Prophecy of the War (1913-1914) Mr. Lewis Einstein's connection with the American diplomatic service began in 1905, when he was appointed third secretary of our embassy at Paris, and extended into the year 1916, when he served as charge d'affaires on a special mission to Bulgaria. In the interval he served at London, Constantinople, and Peking, at the Algeciras Conference, and as Minister to Costa Rica. He is the author of "The Italian Renaissance in England," "American Foreign Policy, by a Diplomatist," "Inside Constantinople: A Diplomatist's Diary during the Dardanelles Expedition," and of numerous monographs and addresses on diplomatic, literary, and art history. The two essays in this volume formed part of a series which appeared in the National Review of London. The first was published in January, 1913, and the second in November, 1914. They are now republished both as records of the past and as warnings for the future. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The War and the Prophets by Herbert Thurston Pdf

Excerpt from The War and the Prophets: Notes on Certain Popular Predictions Current in This Latter Age Although the longest chapter in this volume, that concerned with the pretended prophecy of St. Malachy, may seem at first sight to have little to do with the present war, the observant reader will soon discover that these papal mottoes are closely interwoven with the fabric of nearly all the recent religious predictions concerning present calamities and the end of the world. It therefore seemed desirable to discuss the ques tion of the fraudulent origin of the list in some detail, the more so that much that is written on the subject is curiously ill-informed. The sub stance of the chapter dealing with St. Malachy is taken from two articles which I contributed to The Month as far back as June and July, 1899, where the intimate dependence of the mottoes on Panvinio was, I think, made clear for the first time. The fact that even in such a work as The Catholic Encyclopcedia the prophecy should be treated as a document of serious value seemed to render it needful to deal with the subject somewhat more fully and exhaustively than the matter in itself deserved. Prophecy, the War, and the Near East (Classic Reprint) by George Harold Lancaster Pdf

Excerpt from Prophecy, the War, and the Near East This book goes forth with the earnest prayer that it may stimulate many to search the Scriptures more earnestly, and to watch the signs of the times more carefully, in view Of the great purpose which god is working out in the world today. It is largely in response to the numerous requests which I have received from Christian friends in many directions, that I have humbly endeavoured to outline the difficult though important subject Of Prophecy. And in SO doing I have been fully aware that there are several systems of interpretation which for long centuries have commended themselves to Bible students. But the larger the tree the greater the number of branches, and the fact that there are many interpretations by no means destroys the truth of Prophecy, nor does it militate against our convictions in adopting any one of them. The European War in the Light of Bible Prophecy (Classic Reprint) by George H. Gudebrod Pdf

Excerpt from The European War in the Light of Bible Prophecy War. Each nation loudly proclaims that it did not want war, but preferred peace, and that war was forced upon it against its wish. It is fair to assume that in this, all are sincere, for no nation would willingly enter into so gigantic a struggle, knowing the indescribable misery and incalculable loss it would incur, to say nothing of the possibility of national ruin for all time. What the War Is Teaching (Classic Reprint) by Charles Edward Jefferson Pdf

Excerpt from What the War Is Teaching HE world is poor because it has too T few prophets. It has many his torians; and no one would deny the importance of an accurate statement of the facts both of past and of current history. But if one must distinguish, it is not so important to know the facts as to know the meaning of the facts. Truth is not only greater than fiction but greater than fact. The philosophy of history is more valuable than its chronicles. We need in terpreters who cmr'éak through the crust of mere events and show us mo tives, meanings, tendencies, outcomes. And these men are prophets. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Greek Prose Composition (Classic Reprint) by Henry Carr Pearson Pdf

Excerpt from Greek Prose Composition Part I contains, in graded lessons, the principal points of Greek syntax, the unusual and non-essential being purposely omitted. These lessons are designed for use at the beginning of the second year's study of Greek, thereby serving as a partial review of the first year's work and as an introduction to the composition work in connection with the reading of Xenophon's Anabasis. Part II contains short, simple English sentences, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. These should be used daily in connection with the reading of the text. Part III contains connected English prose, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. This is carefully graded, so that the stu dent who performs faithfully the work outlined here will be able to pass the entrance examination of any of the American colleges. The method of writing Greek at sight used in this book needs a word of explanation. It is the outgrowth of the author's personal experience in the classroom, and his belief that the best results can be obtained only by systematic practice in connection with the regular work. Excerpt from Poems of the War Invocation. O country, bleeding from the heart, If these poor songs can touch thy woe, And draw thee but awhile apart From sorrow's bitter overflow, Then not in vain This feeble strain About the common air shall blow. As David stood by prostrate Saul, So wait I at thy sacred feet: I reverently raise thy pall, To see thy mighty bosom beat. I would not wrong Thy grief with song; I would but utter what is meet.
