The Quebec Tercentenary Commemorative History (Classic Reprint) by Frank Carrel Pdf

Excerpt from The Quebec Tercentenary Commemorative History The American colonies, in their impatience to realize national aspirations, threw off the yoke of England long before they had attained the degree of social and political independence which Canada has reached. The predominating idea in the mind of the revolutionary party was that freedom and colonial relations, however attenuated and ameliorated thelatter might he, were wholly incompatible. The remarkable ex ample that Canada was to give to the world of two races achieving constitutional liberty in union with the British empire, was beyond their powers of imagination or possibly, being bent upon a larger and freer life, they did not much care to exercise their imagination in that direction. So they took their way, gained the desire of their heart, and as a people developed on lines of their own with no restraint or guidance from the outside world. This step on the part of the colonies threw into Canada a large loyal element - loyal in the sense of devotion to British connection. The extrusion of this element by the emancipated colonies simpli fied conditions there but to some extent complicated them here, by stamping a special character on those parts of the country - Upper Canada particularly - to which the new settlers be took themselves. But What has especially given a unique stamp to Canada is its dual population. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Art of Nation-Building by H.V. Nelles Pdf

In 1908 Canada celebrated its 300th anniversary – the tercentenary of Champlain's founding of Quebec City. In two glorious weeks of parades, ceremonies, balls, and festivities, Canadians commemorated their history in a spectacle that would not be surpassed until the centennial of 1967. The climax of the 1908 celebration was an historical pageant in which 4000 sumptuously costumed citizens re-enacted classic events in Canada's history. Canada's leading painters were also there to capture these memorable scenes for posterity. The past was being celebrated, but with the present and the future in mind. In The Art of Nation-Building, H.V. Nelles uses contemporary literary techniques to convey the scope, colour, and intensity of the tercentenary from various perspectives. Drawing on the intimate diaries and letters of leading social and political figures, he leads us behind the scenes, disclosing the politics of memory, the theatrics of history, and the making of a modern monarchy. Nelles reveals what we actually do when we commemorate, how we use the past, and the multivocal character of mass celebration This richly illustrated, thought-provoking interpretation of public celebrations offers a novel perspective on Quebec and on the upcoming celebration of the millennium. Winner of two prestigious prizes: the Sir John A. Macdonald Prize (CHA) and the Prix Lionel-Groulx (IHAF).

Excerpt from A Canadian History: For Boys and Girls The Old and You all know that the continents of Europe the New and America are divided from each Other Worlds by the great Atlantic Ocean. The History of Canada by John Mercier Mcmullen Pdf

Excerpt from The History of Canada: From Its First Discovery to the Present Time To enable us to judge accurately of the present, and regard our national future with confidence, 'a correct acquaintance with the past is an absolute necessity. To the great mass of the Canadian people such a study has hitherto been almost an impossibility, from the fact that what might be properly called a history of their country did not exist. The author designs to supply, as far as possible, this great want in Canadian literature, and faithfully to depict the past as an aid to illuminate the present, and as an index to the future. In carrying out this purpose he does not intend to restrict himself to a mere detail of political occurrences, and would also illustrate the social progress of the people. It is true that many books have been published which supply detached portions of Canadian history, that several excellent statistical works have been compiled from time to time, and that much valuable information relative to this country may be gleaned from the writings of travellers and residents but it is also equally true that these are not accessible to the general reader. The author will endeavour to arrange methodically whatever of value is to be gleaned from those sources, and to present the people of Canada with a useful and impartial history of their country, from its discovery to the present time. Will become what her sons make her. At the same time it is hoped that the little work will be. A boon to teachers who are burdened with the many subjects of the school curriculum and the thousand interests of the school room. The two simple little sketches give a bird's-eye view of the whole period, refer to topics which are discussed in the book, and proceeding from the general to the particular, they arouse curiosity while they engender a spirit of research. Ontario Public School by George McKinnon Wrong Pdf

Excerpt from Ontario Public School: History of Canada Arctic Ocean. Later, he made the hard journey acrossmighty ranges of mountains and stood on the shores of the Pacific Ocean. Meanwhile, in the East, the French and the English were learning, not without bitter strife, the need Of working together for their common country. Canada expanded, first eastward, to include the Maritime Provinces, and then westward, until her long frontiers touched those Of the United States for thousands Of miles from the Atlantic to the Pacific. After this expansion new problems came to Canada. She faced the stupendous task of building railways from the Atlantic to the Pacific. With this came the rapid development Of the West - political, agricultural, and commercial. Canada was long only a colony, but this condition was not adequate for a state which occupied half a continent. When Canadian troops fought on the battle fields Of South Africa, the effect was to increase the national self-reliance of Canada. Then came the grim, dramatic years Of the Great War. During this crisis in the history of mankind, Canada played her splendid part, and she secured recognition by the mother-land and by the world of her new and higher status in the British Commonwealth of Nations.
