The Quest for Peace between Israel and the Palestinians by Haig A. Khatchadourian Pdf

A Palestinian state alongside a secure Israel is the sine qua non of a stable peace between Arabs and Israelis, and at this late date would realize a modicum of the Palestinians' moral and legal territorial rights (roughly equal to those of the Jews/Israelis), and a long-standing aspiration for self-determination. A defense of the "two-state" option, and a qualified defense of the Oslo Accords against Islamist and radical Jewish rejectionist critics is therefore offered. Besides satisfying Palestinian aspirations, Palestinian statehood would help open the way to a comprehensive peace between the Arabs and Israel, through a just, negotiated settlement of the Syrian/Lebanese-Israeli territorial disputes. A comprehensive peace, in turn, should stimulate economic and cultural cooperation between Israel and the Arab countries (the "peace dividend"), lending it additional strength. Increased stability should also result from the hoped-for liberalization and democratization of the region's Arab regimes.

The Quest for Viable Peace by Jock Covey,Michael J. Dziedzic,Leonard R. Hawley Pdf

International intervention in failing states that threaten peace and security does not by itself make the world safer. Too often, when intervening forces are unable to change the circumstances that breed violence, the intervention stalls and old animosities reignite. If international intervention is to be effective, its first task must be the attainment of viable peace. As the editors of this groundbreaking volume explain, viable peace is achieved when the capacity of domestic institutions to resolve disputes peacefully overtakes the powerful motives and means for continued violent conflict. Getting to this point quickly demands the careful design and coordinated implementation of four mutually reinforcing strategies to moderate political conflict, defeat militant extremism, inculcate the rule of law, and establish a political economy that reduces rather than ignites conflict.Drawing on their firsthand experience of Kosovo, the contributors all seasoned practitioners and policymakers identify the concrete challenges that must be confronted and lay out the practical steps that must be taken to transform a society habituated to violent conflict into one where peace can eventually be self-sustaining.Conceptually innovative yet profoundly pragmatic, this book will change the way that international intervention is conceived and conducted.Read the review on Foreign Affairs."

Israel and the Quest for Permanence by Dan Perry,Alfred Ironside Pdf

For many years, the conflict between Jews and Arabs has affected Middle East politics. In their struggle to establish a Jewish state in a hostile region, the founding citizens of Israel put aside their cultural and religious differences to fight as a unified nation. Ironically, it was the prospect of peace that brought these differences back into the light. Israel became challenged by deep divisions within. The founders did not envision this divided nation--but the founders are gone. Today's Israelis must decide how to carry the founding vision forward. How will Israel's past shape its future? How will its people answer the looming questions of race, religion, citizenship--and nationhood itself? The answers lie in an extraordinary history--and a future only to be imagined.

European Union Support for Colombia's Peace Process by Karlos Pérez de Armiño Pdf

This open access book provides a comprehensive analysis of the EU's crucial support for the implementation of the Havana Peace Agreement between the Colombian government and the FARC-EP. It explores the use of new approaches and instruments that, despite some limitations and criticisms, could go beyond conventional liberal peace and provide useful lessons. Particular attention is paid to three axes: strengthening civil society, protection of human rights and a territorial peace perspective, as a contribution to the "local turn" in peace policies. The book first outlines the background of the conflict, the EU's two-decade defense of a negotiated peace, and the complexities of the peace process. Then, it analyses the development cooperation and political support provided in different areas: the collective reinsertion of ex-guerrillas, women and gender initiatives, the rights of ethnic communities, the sophisticated transitional justice system, as well as activities on reconciliation, victims and protection of human rights defenders.

The Quest for Peace by James Turner Johnson Pdf

James Turner Johnson goes beyond the examination of moral restraints on the occasion and conduct of war to a critical study of the moral thinking that has aimed at its prevention. This scrutiny of the peace issue" in Western society covers nearly two thousand years of history and three traditions of the search for peace: the just war tradition of setting limits to war, the sectarian pacifism of withdrawal from the world and its evils, and the Utopian world-perfecting pacifism that finds the cure for discord among nations in the establishment of a new, more nearly universal, and rightly constituted political order. Revealing the historical depth of all three traditions, the book shows that contemporary "nuclear pacifism" derives from forms of thought that are centuries old. Originally published in 1987.
