The Race Question in Canada (Classic Reprint) by Andre Siegfried Pdf

Excerpt from The Race Question in Canada Canadian politics are a tilting-ground for impassioned rivalries. An immemorial struggle persists between French and English, Catholics and Protestants, while an influence is gathering strength close by them which some day may become predominant - that of the United States. In this complex contest, the subject of my book, the whole future of Canada is at stake. There is no need to begin by evoking memories of history which will be present to all minds. By way of preface it will suffice to set out as clearly as possible the chief factors of what may be called the Canadian problem. It is, as I have implied, a very complex one. Hena its difficulty. Hence its fascination. I In the first place, and above all, it is a racial problem. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1907 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XXXIII POLITICAL IMPERIALISM continued) IL THE ERA OF DIFFICULTIES The Transvaal War had brought the tone of British patriotism to a pitch of exaltation at which it could not maintain itself for long. Peace re-established, the atmosphere became cleared again. Henceforward, it is to be no longer feeling but interest that shall determine the attitude of parties towards the already less burning subject of Imperialism. The French Canadians retain the sentiments that they have cherished all along, but that M. Bourassa alone, or almost alone, has ventured to express. Loyal subjects of the Crown, they declare themselves satisfied with the present, but for this very reason opposed to all change. They recognise that they owe certain duties to England, but admit none at all to the Empire. Sentimental arguments such as the English invoke are the very last to appeal to them, for their loyalty is the fruit of careful reasoning, and the glories of the British name have absolutely no interest for them. What they have at heart is the maintenance of their autonomy and the confirmation of the liberties which they have won after a century of struggling. Anyone who will not begin by reassuring them on this point will find them resolute opponents. From whatever point of view they look at it, Imperialism either frightens them or leaves them indifferent. Is it a commercial union that is in question? Devoting themselves chiefly to agriculture and the learned professions, they do not give the first place in their thoughts to economic problems. What they desire most is to have a free hand, and the idea of a zollverein does not attract them, for by it they would lose their independence in regard to customs duties. A policy of Treaties of Commerce does not...

The Politics of Race in Canada by Augie Fleras,Maria Wallis Pdf

Canadians like to think that they judge people on merit, not skin colour. But are we really colour-blind? Although Canada has an international reputation for welcoming cultural and ethnic diversity, race remains a profound influence in our society, affecting everything from self-perceptions to interpersonal relationships to interactions between the individual and the state. The Politics of Race in Canada deconstructs the myth of Canada's racelessness. Its 24 selections (among them two documents from the early twentieth century and several new essays, published here for the first time) explore the principles, practices, and polemics of race in this country from a broad range of perspectives, academic and otherwise. Designed specifically for courses in the sociology of race and ethnicity, this text will also enrich the study of race in history, anthropology, women's studies, and political science courses. New as well as previously published selections by specialists from many different disciplines offer students a multitude of perspectives on a complex topic. Concluding section focuses students' attention on resistance to traditional ways of thinking about race and ethnicity. Part introductions and study questions encourage critical thinking. Recommended websites and readings suggest new directions for research. Book jacket.

Racism, Eh? by Charmaine Nelson,Camille Antoinette Nelson Pdf

"Racism, Eh? is the first publication that examines racism within the broad Canadian context. This anthology brings together some of the visionaries who are seeking to illuminate the topics of race and racism in Canada through the analysis of historical and contemporary issues, which address race and racism as both material and psychic phenomena. Fundamentally interdisciplinary in nature, this text will be an invaluable resource for undergraduate and graduate students, academics studying or practicing within the Humanities and the Social Sciences, and anyone seeking information on what has been a little explored and poorly understood Canadian issue."--pub. desc.

Dominion of Race by Laura Madokoro,Francine McKenzie,David Meren Pdf

How has race shaped Canada’s international encounters and its role in the world? In Dominion of Race, leading scholars demonstrate the necessity of placing race at the centre of the narratives of Canadian international history. Destabilizing conventional understandings of Canada in the world, they expose how race-thinking has informed priorities and policies, positioned Canada in the international community, and contributed to a global order rooted in racial beliefs. By demonstrating that race is a fundamental component of Canada and its international history, this book calls for reengagement with the histories of those marginalized in, or excluded from, the historical record.

Race and Racism by Leo Driedger,Shiva Halli Pdf

Race and Racism brings together critical contributions from the academic and government sectors that analyse the nature and extent of racism in Canada. The broad spectrum of social scientific approaches represented here - sociology, cultural anthropology, demography, and psychology - and an equal emphasis on quantitative and qualitative methods make this study a particularly rich source for scholars and policy makers alike. Discussion unfolds along four main themes: concepts and theories relating to race (including some treatment of measurement questions), economic and social factors pertaining to race, racism, and discrimination (as represented in opinion and popular perception, measured in various ways), and the dimensions of minority coping in major urban areas. Race and Racism fills in many wavering lines on our cultural landscape and provides an important perspective on social policy for the twenty-first century.

“Race,” Rights and the Law in the Supreme Court of Canada by James W. St. G. Walker,Osgoode Society for Canadian Legal History Pdf

Drawing on four cases relating to race between 1914 and 1955, Walker (history, U. of Waterloo) explores the role of the Canadian Supreme Court and the law in racializing Canadian society. He demonstrates that the justices were expressing the prevailing common sense in their legal decisions, and argues that the law has created the conditions for the country's chronic racism. He projects past and current trends into the future. Co-published by the Osgoode Society for Canadian Legal History. Canadian card order number: C97-931762-2. Colour-Coded by Constance Backhouse Pdf

Historically Canadians have considered themselves to be more or less free of racial prejudice. Although this conception has been challenged in recent years, it has not been completely dispelled. In Colour-Coded, Constance Backhouse illustrates the tenacious hold that white supremacy had on our legal system in the first half of this century, and underscores the damaging legacy of inequality that continues today. Backhouse presents detailed narratives of six court cases, each giving evidence of blatant racism created and enforced through law. The cases focus on Aboriginal, Inuit, Chinese-Canadian, and African-Canadian individuals, taking us from the criminal prosecution of traditional Aboriginal dance to the trial of members of the 'Ku Klux Klan of Kanada.' From thousands of possibilities, Backhouse has selected studies that constitute central moments in the legal history of race in Canada. Her selection also considers a wide range of legal forums, including administrative rulings by municipal councils, criminal trials before police magistrates, and criminal and civil cases heard by the highest courts in the provinces and by the Supreme Court of Canada. The extensive and detailed documentation presented here leaves no doubt that the Canadian legal system played a dominant role in creating and preserving racial discrimination. A central message of this book is that racism is deeply embedded in Canadian history despite Canada's reputation as a raceless society. 'Race' & Ethnicity in Canada by Vic Satzewich,Nikolaos Liodakis Pdf

Through their exploration of the central issues that affect Canadians today - immigration, multiculturalism, assimilation, racism, and Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal relations - the authors argue that race is not a biologically real category, but rather, a socially constructed label used to describe and explain certain kinds of human difference. The text questions whether there are patterns of race and ethnic relations that are truly unique to Canada, and puts Canada into a wider global context.
