Excerpt from The Reclamation Era, 1950, Vol. 36 The primary purpose of the project is to irrigate acres of land 10 miles long and 6 miles wide, 12 miles south of Hay Springs in Sheridan County. Mirage Flats has a history written in human toil, sweat and blood. The Sioux, the Pawnee, and the Cheyenne were in possession of the area until 1877. In 1874 the Govern ment established the Spotted Tail Agency (named after the Brule Sioux Chief) approximately midway between the pres ent towns of Chadron and Hay Springs. In 1877 the gold rush to the Black Hills began and the Government placed the Indians on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. At this time Fort Sheridan was established just south of and replacing the Spotted Tail Agency, and was maintained until 1881.
