The Return of the O'mahony by Harold Frederic Pdf

Excerpt from The Return of the O'mahony: A Novel But Zeke, though his mud-colored hair and beard bore scarcely a trace of gray, and neither his placid, unwrinkled face nor his lithe, elastic form suggested age, somehow produced an impression of seniority upon all his comrades, young and old alike. He had been in the company from the beginning, for one thing; but that was not all. It was certain that he had been out in Utah at the time of Albert Sidney Johnston's expedition - perhaps had fought under him. It seemed pretty well established that before this Mormon episode he had been with Walker in Nicaragua. Over the mellowing canteen he had given stray hints of even other campaigns which his skill had illumined and his valor adorned. Nobody ever felt quite sure how much of this was true - for Zeke had a child's disregard for any mere veracity which might mar the immediate effects of his narratives - but enough passed undoubted to make him the veteran of the company. And that was not all. For cold-blooded intrepidity in battle, for calm, clear-headed rashness on the skirmish-line, Zeke had a fame extending beyond even his regiment and the division to which it belonged. The Return of the O'Mahony (Illustrated Edition) by Harold Frederic Pdf

Frederic (1856-98) was an American journalist and novelist. After leaving school at 15, he worked for four years as a photographic touch-up artist and later became a reporter. By 1882 he was editor of the Albany Evening Journal and two years later moved to England as London correspondent of the New York Times, a position he held for the rest of his life. After several earlier stories the publication of The Damnation of Theron Ware (1896) and Gloria Mundi (1898) saw his talent as a novelist fully recognised. This novel was first published in 1892 and includes a photographic portrait of the author and five illustrations.

The Way We Die Now by Seamus O'Mahony Pdf

We have lost the ability to deal with death. Most of our friends and beloved relations will die in a busy hospital in the care of strangers, doctors and nurses they have known at best for a couple of weeks. They may not even know they are dying, victims of the kindly lie that there is still hope. They are unlikely to see even their family doctor in their final hours, robbed of their dignity and fed through a tube after a long series of excessive and hopeless medical interventions. This is the starting point of Seamus O'Mahoney's thoughtful, moving and unforgettable book on the western way of death. Dying has never been more public, with celebrities writing detailed memoirs of their illness, but in private we have done our best to banish all thought of dying and made a good death increasingly difficult to achieve.

The Damnation of Harold Frederic by Bridget Bennett Pdf

The Damnation of Harold Frederic is a finely honed work of literary criticism. Bennett examines how Frederic both directly and indirectly manipulated his own personal experiences to craft his literary pieces. (His life involved two families: one with his wife, and one with a lover, who eventually was tried for manslaughter in his sensational death.) Her book provides a critical reading of The Damnation of Theron Ware, as well as a close look at his oeuvre, including his final novel, The Market-Place, a pioneering work that paved the way for works of socioeconomic commentary such as Dreiser's Trilogy of Desire and Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. Drawing on material previously unavailable to scholars, Bennett engages readers in exploring how an author's private life and public works intersect.
