A Bend in the River by V S Naipaul Pdf

When Salim, a young Indian man, is offered a small business in Central Africa, he accepts. Accompanied by Metty, the son of one of the family slaves, he travels deep into the heart of the continent to become a trader in the town on a bend in the river. As Salim strives to establish himself, he becomes closely involved with the fluid and dangerous politics of the newly-independent state. V.S. Naipaul unfolds a powerful story of changing Africa, sustaining his superb characterization and dramatic invention right to the memorable conclusion. He uses the troubled continent as a text to preach magnificently upon the sickness of a world losing touch with its past. Together with A House for Mr Biswas, A Bend In The River established V.S. Naipaul as one of the pre-eminent novelists of our time.

Fearing for the life of his nephew when an assassination attempt is thwarted, Merlyn takes Arthur and his boyhood companions Gwin, Ghilleadh, and Bedwyr, to the ruins of a long-abandoned Roman fort far from Camulod. Once there, Merlyn realizes it's time for Arthur to become worthy of the sword he is destined to wield later in his life-the mighty Excalibur. But beyond their idyllic hiding place, forces threaten the tenuous peace of Camulod. In Cambria, the death of Arthur's father Uther has left his people leaderless, and in Cornwall, Merlyn's enemy Peter Ironhair is gathering forces to destroy all Merlyn holds dear. And Merlyn himself is struggling, because in order to make his dream of a united Britain real, he must put the person he loves most in the world in mortal danger-he and Arthur must return to Camulod. The River Bend by Wesley E. Hall Pdf

The River Bend is a collection of fifty-six boyhood reminiscences about growing up in the River Bend country of south-central Oklahoma, in the first decades of the Twentieth Century. These little stories first appeared as a weekly column in the Konawa Leader, a Seminole County, Oklahoma, newspaper owned and published by Ed Gallagher. This book is my response to the mountain of correspondence from readers of the column who almost invariably began their letters with: "Have you written a book about this wonderful place?" The "Bend" is twenty-five square miles of rolling hills, scrub oak, and briar patches separated from the rest of the world by the wide and sometimes cantankerous South Canadian River. The nearest town, located in the mouth of the horseshoe bend, is Konawa, which has one paved street and whatever was left standing after the tornado of 1966. The eleventh and last child of a very poor dirt farmer, I grew up thinking I was rich. My family owned a one-hundred-sixty-five-acre farm in the center of the Bend, and on all sides of us were neighbors who seemed like kinfolks. The Great Depression and the Dust Bowl were words no one ever used in my presence.
