A Rightful Place by Noel Pearson,Shireen Morris Pdf

The nation has unfinished business. After more than two centuries, can a rightful place be found for Australia’s original peoples? Soon we will all decide if and how Indigenous Australians will be recognised in the Constitution. In this essential book, several leading writers and thinkers provide a road map to recognition. Starting with the Uluru Statement from the Heart, these eloquent essays show what constitutional recognition means, and what it could make possible: a political voice, a fairer relationship and a renewed appreciation of an ancient culture. With remarkable clarity and power, they traverse law, history and culture to map the path to change. The contributors to A Rightful Place are Noel Pearson, Megan Davis, Stan Grant, Rod Little and Jackie Huggins, Damien Freeman and Nolan Hunter, Warren Mundine, and Shireen Morris. The book includes a foreword by Galarrwuy Yunupingu. A Rightful Place is edited by Shireen Morris, a lawyer and constitutional reform fellow at the Cape York Institute and researcher at Monash University.

The Recognition Principle by Vinicio Busacchi Pdf

This book responds to the need for a clearer understanding of issues related to the theme of recognition in various disciplinary fields in which it plays an important role, such as psychology, sociology and politics. The book also considers in particular detail the usefulness of a theoretical-speculative definition of the question of recognition. It also shows that no philosophy of recognition can be solidly built, or claim epistemic strength and practical-operational forcefulness, without a certain degree of psychological and anthropological excavation, without a specific ‘discourse on man’. Through an engagement with such a discourse, this book is able to explore the concept of recognition as a general principle, namely the ‘recognition principle’.

Newly updated to include information for the UK, The Carrot Principle illustrates how ordinary organizations have made themselves extraordinary through the use of strategic employee recognition. The authors show how great organizations and great managers succeed through living the Carrot Principle. Featuring case studies of effective recognition in some of the world's most successful organizations, such as DHL, Avis, Pepsi, etc and demonstrating how recognition has led to improved employee commitment and bottom line results in these companies, the book also shows how a Carrot Culture is not created by the CEO, senior leadership team or HR department, but manager by manager. The book provides examples of leaders - from around the globe - who lead through the Carrot Principle: providing plentiful how-to's for managers wishing to get started or hoping to enhance their recognition abilities. Overall, there has never been a book in the recognition or motivation space that has had this type of quantitative or case study support.

Graphics Recognition. Recent Advances by Atul K. Chhabra,Dov Dori Pdf

This edited volume contains refereed and improved versions of select papers 1 that were presented at the third IAPR Workshop on Graphics Recognition (GREC’99), held at Rambagh Palace in Jaipur, India, 26–27, September 1999. The workshop was organized by the TC10 (Technical Committee on Graphics Recognition) of the IAPR. Edited volumes from the previous two workshops in this series are also available as Lecture Notes in Computer Science (volumes 1072 and 1389). Graphics recognition is the study of techniques for computer interpretation of images of line drawings and symbols. This includes methods such as vectori- tion, symbol recognition, and table and chart recognition for applications such as engineering drawings, schematics, logic drawings, maps, diagrams, and musical scores. Some recently developed techniques include graphics-based information or drawing retrieval and recognition of online graphical strokes. With the recent advances in the ?eld, there is now a need to develop benchmarks for evaluating and comparing algorithms and systems. Graphics recognition is a growing ?eld of interest in the broader document image recognition community. The GREC’99 workshop was attended by ?fty-?ve people from ?fteen co- tries. The workshop program consisted of six technical sessions. Each session began with a half-hour invited talk which was followed by several short talks. Each session closed with a half-hour panel discussion where the authors ?elded questions from the other participants. Several interesting new research directions were discussed at the workshop.

No Small Change by Frank Brennan Pdf

In 1967, Australians voted overwhelmingly in favor of removing from the Constitution two references that discriminated against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Though these seemed like small amendments, they were an impetus for real change: from terra nullius to land rights, and from assimilation to self-determination. Nearly 50 years later, there is a groundswell of support for our Indigenous heritage to be formally recognized in the Constitution. With the prospect of a new referendum in the near future, Frank Brennan considers how far Australians have come—and yet how much work lies ahead. He looks through the prism of history to examine what we can learn from our successes and failures since 1967, from the efforts of the Council of Aboriginal Affairs to the Gove land rights case and the Aboriginal Tent Embassy. He also assesses the way forward: how the upcoming referendum might provide fresh momentum for governments and Indigenous Australians to negotiate better outcomes. Written by one of the most respected commentators on legal and human rights issues, this book makes a vital contribution to the understanding of Indigenous affairs. It will generate crucial debate on how Australians should acknowledge the history that for too long has gone unrecognized

Machine Learning and Data Mining in Pattern Recognition by Petra Perner,Atsushi Imiya Pdf

We met again in front of the statue of Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz in the city of Leipzig. Leibniz, a famous son of Leipzig, planned automatic logical inference using symbolic computation, aimed to collate all human knowledge. Today, artificial intelligence deals with large amounts of data and knowledge and finds new information using machine learning and data mining. Machine learning and data mining are irreplaceable subjects and tools for the theory of pattern recognition and in applications of pattern recognition such as bioinformatics and data retrieval. This was the fourth edition of MLDM in Pattern Recognition which is the main event of Technical Committee 17 of the International Association for Pattern Recognition; it started out as a workshop and continued as a conference in 2003. Today, there are many international meetings which are titled “machine learning” and “data mining”, whose topics are text mining, knowledge discovery, and applications. This meeting from the first focused on aspects of machine learning and data mining in pattern recognition problems. We planned to reorganize classical and well-established pattern recognition paradigms from the viewpoints of machine learning and data mining. Though it was a challenging program in the late 1990s, the idea has inspired new starting points in pattern recognition and effects in other areas such as cognitive computer vision.

Recognition and Religion by Maijastina Kahlos,Heikki J. Koskinen,Ritva Palmén Pdf

This book focuses on recognition and its relation to religion and theology, in both systematic and historical dimensions. While existing research literature on recognition and contemporary recognition theory has been gradually growing since the early 1990s, certain gaps remain in the field covered so far. One of these is the multifaceted interaction between the phenomena of recognition and religion. Since recognition applies to persons, institutions, and normative entities like systems of beliefs, it also provides a very useful analytic and interpretative tool for studying religion. Divided into five sections, with chapters written by established scholars in their respective fields, the book explores the roots, history, and limits of recognition theory in the context of religious belief. Exploring early Christian and medieval sources on recognition and religion, it also offers contemporary applications of this underexplored combination. This is a timely book, as debates over religious identities, problematic forms of extremism and societal issues related with multiculturalism continue to dominate the media and politics. It will, therefore, be of great interest to scholars of recognition studies as well as religious studies, theology, philosophy, and religious and intellectual history.

Bound by Recognition by Patchen Markell Pdf

In an era of heightened concern about injustice in relations of identity and difference, political theorists often prescribe equal recognition as a remedy for the ills of subordination. Drawing on the philosophy of Hegel, they envision a system of reciprocal knowledge and esteem, in which the affirming glance of others lets everyone be who they really are. This book challenges the equation of recognition with justice. Patchen Markell mines neglected strands of the concept's genealogy and reconstructs an unorthodox interpretation of Hegel, who, in the unexpected company of Sophocles, Aristotle, Arendt, and others, reveals why recognition's promised satisfactions are bound to disappoint, and even to stifle. Written with exceptional clarity, the book develops an alternative account of the nature and sources of identity-based injustice in which the pursuit of recognition is part of the problem rather than the solution. And it articulates an alternative conception of justice rooted not in the recognition of identity of the other but in the acknowledgment of our own finitude in the face of a future thick with surprise. Moving deftly among contemporary political philosophers (including Taylor and Kymlicka), the close interpretation of ancient and modern texts (Hegel's Phenomenology, Aristotle's Poetics, and more), and the exploration of rich case studies drawn from literature (Antigone), history (Jewish emancipation in nineteenth-century Prussia), and modern politics (official multiculturalism), Bound by Recognition is at once a sustained treatment of the problem of recognition and a sequence of virtuoso studies.
