Diagnosis of the Comma Cloud of 10 April 1979 by Daniel Ridge Pdf

On 10 April 1979 a comma cloud developed in association with a severe storm outbreak in Texas and Oklahoma during the AVE-SESAME 1 regional-scale experiment. With rather high time- and space-resolution rawinsonde data, plus GOES, radar, and surface data, a diagnosis was made of the structure and evolution of the disturbance which spawned the clouds. Vertical motion was computed by the kinematic method and from the quasi-geostrophic (QG) omega equation. An alternate partition of the GQ forcing function was tested. Five mesoscale waves in the mid- to high-troposphere strongly affected the weather patterns on 10 April 1979. These disturbances had wavelengths from 500 to 800 km, phase speeds of 20 to 33 m/s, and 500 mb height amplitudes around 30 m. They showed excellent time continuity in the 500 mb relative vorticity analyses. Both omega analyses showed 500 mb rising motion in eastern New Mexico six hours before a subsynoptic surface low and tornadic storms developed just to the east in Texas. Kinematic omegas indicated subsidence over the Texas coastal plain for six hours in the afternoon, evidently associated with maintenance of a surface pressure ridge and an intense low-level inversion which inhibited convection in that area. Because of its ageostrophic sensitivity and computational ease, kinematic omega is more useful than QG omega for operational purposes. However, the two methods make an independent and complementary pair for research purposes.

Synoptic and Dynamic Climatology by Roger G. Barry,Andrew M. Carleton Pdf

Synoptic and Dynamic Climatology provides the first comprehensive account of the dynamical behaviour and mechanisms of the global climate system and its components, together with a modern survey of synoptic-scale weather systems in the tropics and extratropics, and of the methods and applications of synoptic climate classification. It is unrivalled in the scope and detail of its contents. The work is thoroughly up to date, with extensive bibliographies by chapter. It is illustrated with nearly 300 figures and plates. *Part 1 provides an introduction to the global climate system and the space-time scales of weather and climate processes, followed by a chapter on climate data and their analysis *Part 2 describes and explains the characteristics of the general circulation of the global atmosphere and includes the nature and causes of global teleconnection patterns *Part 3 discusses synoptic weather systems in the extratropics and tropics and satellite-based climatologies of synoptic features. It also describes the applications of synoptic climatology and summarises current climatic research and its directions.

Microwave Remote Sensing for Oceanographic and Marine Weather-Forecast Models by Robin A. Vaughan Pdf

The power of microwave remote sensing for studying the oceans of the world was demonstrated conclusively by the SEASAT mission in 1978. Since then, no further satellite-flown instruments have been available to provide further data of this type. However, the proposed launch of ESA's ERS-1 satellite will lead to a new set of active microwave instruments being flown in space in 1990. Even though similar data has been obtained from aircraft-flown instruments SAR, scatterometers, altimeters etc. - a great deal of activity has been taking place to develop the necessary expertise in handling and analysing such data when it comes on-stream from ERS-1 and from subsequent satellites. It was against this background that the scientific Affairs Division of NATO again agreed to sponsor an ASI in Dundee in 1988. Its purpose was to review existing knowledge of the extraction of marine and atmospheric geophysical parameters from satellite-gathered microwave data and to enable scientists to prepare themselves and their computing systems to utilise the new data when it becomes available. The importance of the data is largely as input parameters to assist in the fitting of boundary conditions in large computer models. The course was concerned more with the non-imaging instruments, that is with passive radiometers, altimeters and scatterometers, than with the (imaging) synthetic aperture radar.

Northeast Snowstorms by Paul Kocin,Louis Uccellini Pdf

Designed with researchers, students, and weather observers and enthusiasts in mind, Northeast Snowstorms takes the unique approach of utilizing conventional weather charts and detailed descriptions of individual storms to analyze storms in a multi-disciplinary way. The most comprehensive treatment of winter storms ever compiled, this two-volume set includes case studies, insights, historic photos, and 200 color figures. The extra material on the SpringerExtras server contains five days of complete reanalysis data at 35-km grid resolution and 64 vertical levels for each of the cases. This allows everyone from enthusiasts to students to conduct their own diagnostic studies or research projects for any of the 70 historic cases, from a PC or workstation environment. Instructors take note: this is an excellent tool for creating classroom exercises.
