The Unraveling . . . of the Rug Merchants by Janice Zalewski Pdf

Her head is spinning faster than a whirling dervishs. Yet, Christen, the owner of the Galleria Persian Arts in the New Orleans iconic French Quarter, is caught up in doing what is fun versus doing what is right. Her intuition is good; it tells her that this man might be trouble. He looks like Omar Shariff, knows Persian rugs, and acts like he can sell a lot of them. Her sensual nature wants to hire him on the spot. Her Catholic Blessed Mother upbringing cautions her to be careful. The Unraveling of the Rug Merchants recounts the undoing of 44- year-old Polish Catholic Christen Janizeski, by hiring Jamshid Khafezi, an exiled Sufi mystic and Moslem rug merchant as her manager. Booklovers take a metaphorical magic carpet ride around the Islamic World where they are privy to honest bohemian introspective chit chat from paradoxical cultural perspectives. They meet exotic characters when they are taken into native homes and bustling bazaars where they listen in on indigenous conversations and intuit the consequence of forbidden love and sexual intrigue. Readers witness a collision of remarkable characters and worlds as this is at once an extraordinary story of two people who are about to discover who they really are and an unforgettable look into the impact of poor Ohio Valley coal mining country and the stunning culture of Islam.

The Carpet Merchant of Konstantiniyya, Vol. II by Reimena Yee Pdf

Zeynel, a carpet merchant turned vampire, has accepted his fate and now searches for the stories of his past. With his ties to Istanbul threadbare after the passing of his wife, Ayşe, he travels across the West in search of a new home. On the invitation of a young friend, Alfred Grimsley, Zeynel moves to a quiet English town where he is confronted by a fad for all things Turkish – but not as he knows it. Zeynel’s new life is thrown off balance when Mora Strigoi, the vampire responsible for Zeynel’s death, appears at his door begging for forgiveness. With Mora’s arrival and Alfred on the trail of a mysterious serial killer, Zeynel must decide whether he can make peace with the past before everything he has built begins to unravel. The Carpet Merchant of Konstantiniyya, Vol II is the second and final instalment of the Eisner-nominated graphic novel. A modern Gothic story that takes apart the 'vampire as other' trope, it tells of the healing balm of compassion and the redemptive power of forgiveness.

Trust and Trustworthiness by Russell Hardin Pdf

What does it mean to "trust?" What makes us feel secure enough to place our confidence—even at times our welfare—in the hands of other people? Is it possible to "trust" an institution? What exactly do people mean when they claim to "distrust" their governments? As difficult as it may be to define, trust is essential to the formation and maintenance of a civil society. In Trust and Trustworthiness political scientist Russell Hardin addresses the standard theories of trust and articulates his own new and compelling idea: that much of what we call trust can be best described as "encapsulated interest." Research into the roles of trust in our society has offered a broad range of often conflicting theories. Some theorists maintain that trust is a social virtue that cannot be reduced to strategic self-interest; others claim that trusting another person is ultimately a rational calculation based on information about that person and his or her incentives and motivations. Hardin argues that we place our trust in persons whom we believe to have strong reasons to act in our best interests. He claims that we are correct when we assume that the main incentive of those whom we trust is to maintain a relationship with us—whether it be for reasons of economic benefit or for love and friendship. Hardin articulates his theory using examples from a broad array of personal and social relationships, paying particular attention to explanations of the development of trusting relationships. He also examines trustworthiness and seeks to understand why people may behave in ways that violate their own self-interest in order to honor commitments they have made to others. The book also draws important distinctions between vernacular uses of "trust" and "trustworthiness," contrasting, for example, the type of trust (or distrust) we place in individuals with the trust we place in institutions Trust and Trustworthiness represents the culmination of important new research into the roles of trust in our society; it offers a challenging new voice in the current discourse about the origins of cooperative behavior and its consequences for social and civic life. Manufacturing in the Ottoman Empire and Turkey, 1500-1950 by Donald Quataert Pdf

This book provides the first comprehensive history of manufacturing in the Ottoman Empire and its Turkish successor state. As the Ottoman Empire evolved, manufacturing underwent an unusual trajectory. Expansion in the sixteenth century gave way to transformation and adaptation after the Industrial Revolution. Then, in the earlier part of the twentieth century, modern Turkey's attempt at state-led industrialization became a model for many developing countries. Suraiya Faroqhi, Mehmet Genc, Donald Quataert, and Caglar Keyder, experts on different phases of the manufacturing trajectory, provide here exceptional case studies of manufacturing activities in their social and political contexts, integrating first-hand research with surveys of the literature. This work offers rich material for historians, economists, and other social scientists, including those interested in the origins of underdevelopment and development in the contemporary world.
