The Rust Fungi of Cereals, Grasses and Bamboos by George B. Cummins Pdf

In the preparation of this descriptive manual of the rust fungi of the grasses of the world the principal goal was to produce a system by which these important pathogens might be recognized on the basis of their morophology, without dependence on the identity of the host plant. This is an Utopian goal and, being Utopian, has doubtless not been attained. But it is better to have tried and partially failed than not to have tried at all. The first attempt to revise the classification on a new basis utilized the rust fungi of the tribe Andropogoneae. A "Group System" was initiated (Uredineana 4:5-89. 1953) based on the uredinial stage. The attempt was satisfactory at the time, but was not adaptable when all grass rust fungi were considered. Consequently, an expanded system was employed when I attempted a summarization of all grass rust fungi. The expanded scheme (Plant Disease Reporter Supplement 237:1-52. 1956) of 9 Groups proved to be a most helpful organizational system and is used here (see explanations, p. Xi) in Puccinia, Uromyces, and Uredo. The system is useful and does aggregate generally similar species, rather than segregating them as in a host-based arrangement. The characters used, i.e. presence or absence of paraphyses, arrangement of germ pores, and echinulate or verrucose spore surface, are subject to minimal intergradations.

The Cereal Rusts by William Bushnell Pdf

The Cereal Rusts, Volume I: Origins, Specificity, Structure, and Physiology presents the historical, evolutionary, taxonomic, structural, genetic, and physiological characteristics of cereal rust fungi and the diseases they cause in cereal crops. The cereal rusts are potentially serious disease threats to cereal crops and have caused widespread losses in wheat, oats, barley, and related crops. This three-part volume brings together in a single reference source the accumulated knowledge, complex, challenging science of cereal rusts. The first chapters of this 16-chapter volume cover the pioneering contributions of early scientists to the knowledge of cereal rusts, the evolution of cereal rusts, and the taxonomy of cereal rust fungi. The book also examines the specificity of cereal rusts including formae speciales, race specificity, pathogen-host genetics, histology and molecular biology of host parasite specificity, and the genetics of rust fungus populations as reflected by virulence frequency. The text further discusses the structure and physiology aspects; the germination of urediospores and differentiation of infection structures; and the infection under artificial conditions. The ultrastructure of hyphae and urediospores; the development and physiology of teliospores; and the obligate parasitism and axenic culture of rust fungi are also explained. This volume also encompasses the structure and physiology of haustoria; structural and physiological alterations in susceptible hosts; and effects of rust on plant development in relation to nutrient translocation. Cereal rust investigators, plant pathologists, agronomists, agriculturalists, research biochemists, cytologists, geneticists, physiologists, taxonomists, epidemiologists, and pathologists will find this book invaluable.

Genomics of Plant-Associated Fungi: Monocot Pathogens by Ralph A. Dean,Ann Lichens-Park,Chittaranjan Kole Pdf

This book describes how genomics has revolutionized our understanding of agriculturally important plant-associated fungi. It illustrates some fundamental discoveries about these eukaryotic microbes with regard to the overall structure of their genomes, their lifestyles and the molecular mechanisms that form the basis of their interactions with plants. Genomics has provided new insights into fungal lifestyles and led to practical advances in plant breeding and crop protection, such as predictions about the spread and evolution of new pathogens. This volume focuses on fungi that are important cereal and other monocot plant pathogens and includes: Pyrenophora tritici-repentis, Cochliobolus sp., Colletotrichum sp., Fusarium graminearum, Mycosphaerella graminicola and Mycosphaerella fijiensis, Magnaporthe oryzae, Blumeria graminis and Puccinia graminis.

Management of Wheat and Barley Diseases by Devendra Pal Singh Pdf

Both wheat and barley are two of the most important food and industrial crops in the world. Wheat and barley cultivation has experienced changes in practices due to factors such as methods of conservation agriculture, cropping systems, wheat varieties, changes in weather patterns, and international trade, necessitating new and different approaches for the successful management of emerging diseases and new pathotypes of pathogens. This valuable volume explores a multitude of new approaches and techniques for the effective management of emerging wheat diseases. This new volume presents the latest literature on management technology of diseases that affect the production of wheat and are capable of reducing grain yields as well as grain quality. These diseases include rusts, smuts, other foliar diseases such as blight, spots, blotch, powdery mildew, bunts, etc., as well as diseases such as Karnal bunt of wheat, which is of importance to international trade. This book will be highly valuable to researchers, students, teachers, farmers, seed growers, traders, and other stakeholders dealing with wheat and barley. It also advances our knowledge in the field of plant pathology, plant breeding, and plant biotechnology, agronomy, and grain quality and pesticide industries. The book will serve as a reference on disease management technologies for the containment of losses in wheat and barley yields and will assist in maintaining wheat quality, reducing the cost of cultivation, increasing yield, and thus in helping to ensuring food security on a global level.

Diseases, Distribution, Epidemiology, and Control by Alan P. Roelfs,William R. Bushnell Pdf

The Cereal Rusts, Volume II: Diseases, Distribution, Epidemiology, and Control is a compendium of papers that aims to control cereal rusts through principles about the nature of the disease, as well as learned strategies toward its control. These papers deal with the major cereal rust diseases such as wheat and rye stem rust, wheat leaf rust, stripe rust, oat stem rust, barley leaf rust. Control of these types of rust diseases include cultural methods, barberry eradication, crop resistance, fungicides, and ecological controls. One paper notes that cultivars, a plant variety developed through selective breeding, should be used. The key to its development with long-lasting resistance is diversity, namely, genetic diversity in resistance types, and diversity in its strategic development, including a combination of race-specific with non-race specific resistance. For example, Parlevliet has pointed out that in natural ecosystems, race-specific resistance can protect the host plant by rendering the pathogen population less aggressive. One paper also examines the use of chemicals for rust disease control in the United States. This compendium is ideally suited for the cytologists, physiologists, biochemists, geneticists, epidemiologists, taxonomists, and cereal plant pathologists.

Diseases of Bamboos in Asia by C. Mohanan Pdf

Bamboos form the backbone of the rural economy of many Asian countries. Although considered very hardly plants, bamboos do, from time to time, suffer from diseases. Bamboos are now increasingly being grown in plantations, and this necessitates increased vigilance against disease attacks, and preparedness for effective and rapid control if the attack occurs. This landmark publication makes vital information on bamboo diseases widely available, and is expected to stimulate further research and the development of appropriate control measures.
