Excerpt from The Sacred History of the World: As Displayed in the Creation and Subsequent Events to the Deluge; Attempted to Be Philosophically Considered, in a Series of Letters to a Son Four years ago the author felt the want of abook like that which is now offered to the ublic in the following pages. At that period of his ife he wished a selected and concentrated view of such facts and reasonings on the creation, intellectual design, and divine economy of the world we inhabit, as would correspond with the other knowledge he was acquit ing; and which at the same time should be so con ceived and shaped as to suit the modern topics and style of thought and reasoning, in which the philo sophical subjects that interested him were beginning to be presented. Finding none at that time so col lected and represented as to satisfy his young cu riosity, or sufficiently adapted to meet the ideas and difficulties that were arising around him, he was obliged to make such outlines of this great subject, for his own information, as occasional studies and opportunities enabled him to form. Amid these sketches for his private use, a latent desire insensibly occurred to attempt at some part of his life to supply, for the service of others who should participate m these sentiments, what he found to be necessary for his own satisfaction. Gradually this wish increased into a more determining pu se, and has, as other motives concurred, produced t e resolution in his ma ture age of endeavouring, for the benefit of younger minds who may reason and feel as he did, to arrange. Sacred History of the World, as Displayed in the Creation and Subsequent Events to the Deluge by Sharon Turner Pdf

Excerpt from Sacred History of the World, as Displayed in the Creation and Subsequent Events to the Deluge: Attempted to Be Philosophically Considered, in a Series of Letters to a Son As Nature will never be properly' understood, if its creation by the Deity be excluded from the thought, -neither will Human history appear a rational or connected system, nor be found in harmony with the science which characterizes the laws of the material Universe, if the Sacred History which has aecom panied our earthly subsistence, be omitted in our contemplation. It is this which gives purpose, order, causation, process, intelligence, and benevolence to the other. At least the present Author never under stood, or duly appreciated, the ancient 'history of mankind, until he viewed it with this association, and had traced such of their mutual relations as he was enabled to discern. New light and intelligibility then spread over the whole, and made that a pleasing and useful study, which had been before a dissatisfying and barren one. The Days of Creation by Andrew J. Brown Pdf

The Days of Creation examines the history of Christian interpretation of the seven-day framework of Genesis 1:1–2:3 in the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament from the post-apostolic era to the debates surrounding Essays and Reviews (1860). Included in the survey are patristic, medieval, Renaissance/Reformation, eighteenth-century Enlightenment and finally early to mid-nineteenth-century interpretations of the days of creation. This study enables an insight into the mighty career of a biblical text of seminal importance, and fills a significant niche in reception-historical research.
