The Vagabond (Classic Reprint) by Adam Badeau Pdf

Excerpt from The Vagabond Go'rrsctk, the adored of the ladies, is about to leave us; he has given three concerts, each positively the last, and another is announced. Gottschalk's career as an American artist, both at home and abroad, relieves us from the reproach of neither producing nor appreciating genius; for despite his numerous afl'ectations, and his ad captandum artifices, the handsome piano-player is a ge nius. I heard him play, a week ago, at the concert of the Philharmonic Society, and never was more impressed with his littleness and his greatness. He lounged listlessly towards the platform, scarcely vouchsafed a how of recognition as he snufi'ed up the incense of applause prof fered by his worshippers in pink bonnets, and sat down at the instrument. At first, his hands wandered lan guidly over the keys, and his eyes, soft and dreamy, but with a blas expression strangely mingling with t) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Beloved Vagabond Why he singled me out for adoption from among the nu washed urchins oi London I never could conjecture. Once I asked him. Because, said he, you were ugly, dirty, ricketty, under sized, underfed and wholly uninteresting. Also because your mother was the very worst washer-woman that ever breathed gin into a shirt-front. The Vagabond in Literature (Classic Reprint) by Arthur Rickett Pdf

Excerpt from The Vagabond in Literature In the introductory paper to this volume an attempt is made to justify the epithet "Vagabond" as applied to writers of a certain temperament. This much may be said here: the term Vagabond is used in no derogatory sense. Etymologically it signifies a wanderer; and such is the meaning attached to the term in the following pages. Differing frequently in character and in intellectual power, a basic similarity of temperament gives the various writers discussed a remarkable spiritual affinity. For in each one the wandering instinct is strong. Sometimes it may take a physical, sometimes an intellectual expression - sometimes both. But always it shows itself, and always it is opposed to to routine and conventions of ordinary life. These papers are primarily studies in temperament; and the literary aspects have been subordinated to the personal element. In fact, they are studies of certain forces in modem literature viewed from a special standpoint. And the standpoint adopted may, it is hoped, prove suggestive, though it does not pretend to be exhaustive. If the papers on Hazlitt and De Quincey are more fragmentary than the others, it is because these writers have been already discussed by the author in a previous volume. It has been thought unnecessary to repeat the points raised there, and these studies may be regarded therefore as at once supplementary and complementary. The Vagabond Book (Classic Reprint) by Frank Farrington Pdf

Excerpt from The Vagabond Book This call to Vagabondia is not an attempt to induce the members of the world of industry to abandon legitimate pursuits and come out upon the highways to live an aimless, pauper existence. Vagabondia does not mean trampdom. It means simply, get the love of Gods outdoors in your heart; get the highways and the byways in your blood. Know no restrictions of weather or of season. All year round is the roving time for the true lover of the star-set canopy and the woods and the fields, come rain or shine. Get out of doors and be a vagabond! When vacation offers opportunity, let not the chance unimproved slip by. Vagabondia with all her glories, her splendid beauties, her absorbing freedom, is at hand. There is in Natures heart a love of mankind that bids her draw you to her breast. Repulse her not. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Vagabond Adventures (Classic Reprint) by Ralph Keeler Pdf

Excerpt from Vagabond Adventures It is an odd sort of fortune to have lived an out-of-the-way or adventurous life. There is always a temptation to tell of it, and not always a reasonable surety that others share the interest in it of the contcur himself. It would, indeed, be a nice problem in the descriptive geometry of narrative to determine the exact point where the lines of the two interests meet, - that of the narrator and that of the people who have to endure the narration. I cannot say that I ever hope to solve this problem; and in the present instance, especially, I would with due respect submit its solution to the acuter intellects of others. This little book is intended to contain a plain sketch of my personal history up to the close of my twenty-second year. Excerpt from A Vagabond in New York Naturally again, they do not appear under their real names. You may walk miles along Sixth Avenue and never find Mr. Cholmondely's laboratory; the Officer who directs the traffic at the corner of Broadway and Union Square will not answer to the name of Dempsey; may even deny the existence of any officer answer ing to that name. Yet you may believe with out fear of being led astray that Mr. Chol mondely, however called, is at this moment somewhere adapting chickens to a new career; that Dempsey, whitest man who ever trod shoe leather, is somewhere directing traffic; that somewhere Gladys, unmindful of her earlier loves, is making eyes - red, piggy eyes - at her mahout of the moment. A Gentleman Vagabond, and Some Others (Classic Reprint) by Francis Hopkinson Smith Pdf

Excerpt from A Gentleman Vagabond, and Some Others I found the major standing in front of Delmonico's, interviewing a large, bare-headed personage in brown cloth spotted with brass buttons. The major was in search of his very particular friend, Mr. John Hardy of Madison Square, and the personage in brown and brass was rather languidly indicating, by a limp and indecisive forefinger, a route through a section of the city which, correctly followed, would have landed the major in the East River. I knew him by the peculiar slant of his slouch hat, the rosy glow of his face, and the way in which his trousers clung to the curves of his well-developed legs, and ended in a sprawl that half covered his shoes. I recognized, too, a carpetbag, a ninety-nine-cent affair, an "occasion," with galvanized iron clasps and paper-leather sides, - the kind opened with your thumb. The major - or, to be more definite.
