The long-awaited history of the art college that became an unlikely epicenter of the art world in the 1960s and 1970s. How did a small art college in Nova Scotia become the epicenter of art education—and to a large extent of the postmimimalist and conceptual art world itself—in the 1960s and 1970s? Before the First World War, Winnipeg was Canada's third-largest city and the undisputed metropolis of the West. Rapid growth had given the city material prosperity, but little of its wealth went to culture or the arts. Judith Nasby, founding director and curator of the Macdonald Stewart Art Centre, animates the story of the gallery from its humble beginnings in the hallways of a university campus in 1916 to its latest incarnation as the internationally recognized Art Gallery of Guelph. Founded by Bik van der Pol, the Dutch collaborative art duo of Liesbeth Bik (b. 1959) and Jos van der Pol (b. 1961), the School of Missing Studies started in 2003 as a collective made-up of artists and architects who recognized the missing as a matter of urgency in public space and how cultural education was so close yet so far removed from cultural production. They investigated what cultures laid the foundations for the loss that we are experiencing from modernization, and how we can learn from this loss. Their project was recreated for programming at the Sandberg Institute, Amsterdam. It also became the subject of the Sandberg Institutes first publication in this new cultural series.
