The Science of Æsthetics by Henry N. Day Pdf

Excerpt from The Science of AEsthetics: Or the Nature, Kinds, Laws and Uses of Beauty However abstract and speculative the present treatise may appear to any, the preparation of it was in fact prompted and carried on to a great extent in the closest practical connection with the study and teaching of rhetoric. This art simply proposes as its aim to teach the construction of Discourse; to train to the expression of thought in language, - to the embodiment of idea in suitable form of articulate sound. There were obviously three different things to be regarded in this work, - the thought to be expressed, the word-form in which it was to be embodied, and the act itself of embodying the thought in the word. Most abundant and most unhappy experience had shown how futile the attempt to acquire the power to speak or to write well by the mere study of the rules of grammar or of rhetorical style. However necessary to the highest skill in speaking and writing the knowledge of those principles may be, the demonstration has been most complete that the exclusive or preponderating study of them can never bring skill in discourse. Nor on the other hand was the art of discourse to be acquired by mere study of thought - of its nature, its laws, its legitimate forms. Beauty by James Kirwan Pdf

This is a pathbreaking comparative and trans-national study of the neglected influences of nation, empire and race upon the development and electoral fortunes of the Labour Party in Britain and the Australian Labor Party from their formative years of the 1900s to the elections of 2010. Based upon extensive primary and secondary source-based research in Britain and Australia over several years, it makes a new and original contribution to the fields of labour, imperial and 'British world' history. The book offers the challenging conclusion that the forces of nation, empire and race exerted much greater influence upon Labour politics in both countries than suggested by 'traditionalists' and 'revisionists' alike. The book will appeal to undergraduates, postgraduates, scholars in history and politics and all those interested in and concerned with the past, present and future of Labour politics in Britain, Australia and more generally.

Dictionary Of Modern American Philosophers by John R. Shook Pdf

The Dictionary of Modern American Philosophers includes both academic and non-academic philosophers, and a large number of female and minority thinkers whose work has been neglected. It includes those intellectuals involved in the development of psychology, pedagogy, sociology, anthropology, education, theology, political science, and several other fields, before these disciplines came to be considered distinct from philosophy in the late nineteenth century. Each entry contains a short biography of the writer, an exposition and analysis of his or her doctrines and ideas, a bibliography of writings, and suggestions for further reading. While all the major post-Civil War philosophers are present, the most valuable feature of this dictionary is its coverage of a huge range of less well-known writers, including hundreds of presently obscure thinkers. In many cases, the Dictionary of Modern American Philosophers offers the first scholarly treatment of the life and work of certain writers. This book will be an indispensable reference work for scholars working on almost any aspect of modern American thought.

Dictionary of Early American Philosophers by John R. Shook Pdf

The Dictionary of Early American Philosophers, which contains over 400 entries by nearly 300 authors, provides an account of philosophical thought in the United States and Canada between 1600 and 1860. The label of "philosopher" has been broadly applied in this Dictionary to intellectuals who have made philosophical contributions regardless of academic career or professional title. Most figures were not academic philosophers, as few such positions existed then, but they did work on philosophical issues and explored philosophical questions involved in such fields as pedagogy, rhetoric, the arts, history, politics, economics, sociology, psychology, medicine, anthropology, religion, metaphysics, and the natural sciences. Each entry begins with biographical and career information, and continues with a discussion of the subject's writings, teaching, and thought. A cross-referencing system refers the reader to other entries. The concluding bibliography lists significant publications by the subject, posthumous editions and collected works, and further reading about the subject.
