Absolute Photometry of the Light of the Night Sky by Franklin Evans Roach,L. L. Smith Pdf

A study is presented of one year of systematic zenith observations made with similar photometers at two observing stations:Haleakala (latitude N 20.7 degrees) and Fritz Peak (latitude N 39.9 degrees). It is shown that, for an effec * tive wavelength of 5300 A, there is a change of intensity with sidereal time (and therefore right ascension) due to three components:(1) integrated starlight, (2) zodiacal light, and (3) airglow continuum. Quantitative separation of the components is made.A critical comparison is made with some earlier investigations with particular reference to the problem of the galactic light.(Author).

Wave Propagation in a Turbulent Medium by Valerian Ilich Tatarski Pdf

This monograph describes the phenomena associated with the propagation of electromagnetic and acoustic waves through atmospheric turbulence. Geared toward specialists in radiophysics and atmospheric acoustics and optics, the treatment is also suitable for advanced undergraduates and graduate students. The author stresses applications to phase and amplitude fluctuations, scintillation of stars, radio scattering, and other problems. Part I covers topics from the theory of random fields and turbulence theory, including statistical description. Part II, on the scattering of waves in the turbulent atmosphere, is supplemented by an appendix on scattering of acoustic radiation. Part III offers a detailed presentation of line-of-sight propagation of acoustic and electromagnetic waves through a turbulent medium. Part IV concludes the text with a comparison of theory with experimental data

At the Crossroads of the Earth and the Sky by Gary Urton Pdf

Above Misminay, the sky also is so divided by the alternation of the two axes of the Milky Way passing through the zenith. This mirror-image quadri-partition of terrestrial and celestial spheres is such that a point within one of the quarters of the earth is related to a point within the corresponding celestial quarter. The transition between the earth and the sky occurs at the horizon, where sacred mountains are related to topographic and celestial features. Based on fieldwork in Misminay, Peru, Gary Urton details a cosmology in which the Milky Way is central. This is the first study that provides a description and analysis of the astronomical and cosmological system in a contemporary community in the Americas. Separate chapters take up the sun, the moon, meteorological phenomena, the stars, and the planets. Star-to-star constellations, the "animal" dark-cloud constellations that cut through the Milky Way, and certain twilight- and midnight-zenith stars are analyzed in terms of their spatial and temporal integration within an indigenous cosmological framework. Urton breaks new ground by demonstrating the indigenous merging of such forms of "precise knowledge" as astronomy, meteorology, agriculture, and the correlation of astronomical and biological cycles within a single calendar system. More than sixty diagrams clarify this Quechua system of astronomy and relate it to more familiar principles of Western astronomy and cosmology.

Air Turbulence and its Methods of Detection by Leonardo Di G. Sigalotti,Fidel Cruz Peregrino,Alejandro Ramírez-Rojas Pdf

The book is a concise guide dealing with the subject of air turbulence and its methods of detection with particular applications to aviation turbulence. It begins with a general description of turbulence and provides a background into the nature and causes of atmospheric turbulence that affect aircraft motion, giving updates on the state-of-the-art research on clear air turbulence (CAT). Important physical processes leading to the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability, a primary producer of CAT, are also explained. The several categories of CAT along with its impact on commercial aviation are also presented in a separate chapter, with particular emphasis on the structural damages to planes and injuries. The central theme of the book deals with both the earlier and the latest CAT detecting methods and techniques for remote and in situ sensing and forecasting. A concise presentation of new technologies for reducing aviation weather-related accidents is also offered. A chapter on the weather accident prevention project of the NASA aviation safety program is also included. Additionally, the book ends with a full description of the recent research activities on CAT and future challenges in turbulence detection, prediction and avoidance.

Vienna in the Age of Uncertainty by Deborah R. Coen Pdf

Vienna in the Age of Uncertainty traces the vital and varied roles of science through the story of three generations of the eminent Exner family, whose members included Nobel Prize–winning biologist Karl Frisch, the teachers of Freud and of physicist Erwin Schrödinger, artists of the Vienna Secession, and a leader of Vienna’s women’s movement. Training her critical eye on the Exners through the rise and fall of Austrian liberalism and into the rise of the Third Reich, Deborah R. Coen demonstrates the interdependence of the family’s scientific and domestic lives, exploring the ways in which public notions of rationality, objectivity, and autonomy were formed in the private sphere. Vienna in the Age of Uncertainty presents the story of the Exners as a microcosm of the larger achievements and tragedies of Austrian political and scientific life in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Asteroseismology by C. Aerts,J. Christensen-Dalsgaard,D. W. Kurtz Pdf

Understanding the stars is the bedrock of modern astrophysics. Stars are the source of life. The chemical enrichment of our Milky Way and of the Universe withallelementsheavierthanlithiumoriginatesintheinteriorsofstars.Stars arethe tracersofthe dynamics ofthe Universe, gravitationallyimplying much more than meets the eye. Stars ionize the interstellar medium and re-ionized the early intergalactic medium. Understanding stellar structure and evolution is fundamental. While stellar structure and evolution are understood in general terms, we lack important physical ingredients, despite extensive research during recent decades.Classicalspectroscopy, photometry, astrometryandinterferometryof stars have traditionally been used as observational constraints to deduce the internal stellar physics. Unfortunately, these types of observations only allow the tuning of the basic common physics laws under stellar conditions with relatively poor precision. The situation is even more worrisome for unknown aspects of the physics and dynamics in stars. These are usually dealt with by using parameterised descriptions of, e.g., the treatments of convection, rotation, angularmomentumtransport, theequationofstate, atomicdi?usion andsettlingofelements,magneto-hydrodynamicalprocesses,andmore.There is a dearth of observational constraints on these processes, thus solar values areoftenassignedtothem.Yetitishardtoimaginethatonesetofparameters is appropriate for the vast range of stars.
