The Occult Imagination in Britain, 1875-1947 by Christine Ferguson,Andrew Radford Pdf

Between 1875 and 1947, a period bookended, respectively, by the founding of the Theosophical Society and the death of notorious occultist celebrity Aleister Crowley, Britain experienced an unparalleled efflorescence of engagement with unusual occult schema and supernatural phenomena such as astral travel, ritual magic, and reincarnationism. Reflecting the signal array of responses by authors, artists, actors, impresarios and popular entertainers to questions of esoteric spirituality and belief, this interdisciplinary collection demonstrates the enormous interest in the occult during a time typically associated with the rise of secularization and scientific innovation. The contributors describe how the occult realm functions as a turbulent conceptual and affective space, shifting between poles of faith and doubt, the sacrosanct and the profane, the endemic and the exotic, the forensic and the fetishistic. Here, occultism emerges as a practice and epistemology that decisively shapes the literary enterprises of writers such as Dion Fortune and Arthur Machen, artists such as Pamela Colman Smith, and revivalists such as Rolf Gardiner

Madame Blavatsky on the Trials and Triumph of Initiation by Helena Petrovna Blavatsky Pdf

1. The Origin of the Mysteries. The last incarnation of one of seven “Lords of the Flame” was Baladeva, Krishna’s brother. Hercules is none other than Baladeva in Greek dress. In the Golden Age, Esoteric Knowledge was common property. Initiation arose later on from the necessity to limit the number of those who knew. The Initiate’s maxim was “All for the people and with the people.” The old Initiates were real philosophers, priests, and healers. They commemorated the secrets of their Mysteries in hieroglyphics. Only those, whose purity allowed them to look at the great Isis unveiled, were admitted to the secrets of Nature and Man. But what Gods and Angels had revealed, Moses reveiled and hid from the sight of the world. 2. The Trial of the Sun-Initiate. Vishvakarman (Hierophant or Logos Demiourgos) cut off seven locks of the neophyte’s long hair (Second Sun’s rays) and replaced them with a crown of brambles — thus making him Vikartana, “shorn of his rays.” The neophyte who can overcome the dreadful trials of Initiation (on the cross of his worldly passions) dies in the Chrestos condition (freed from the clutches of matter) before his second and triumphant birth in Spirit as Christos. The Masonic rite of Initiation is based upon the construction of the Temple of Solomon, a narrative modelled upon Egyptian and still earlier symbolisms. Yet, there never was an Occult Society, however open and sincere, that has not felt the hand of the Jesuit trying to pull it down by every secret means. The Jesuits infected mankind with passivity, ignorance, and superstition in order to impose their Universal Despotism unopposed. 3. The Mystery of the “Sun of Initiation.” In the days of Aristotle, few were the true Adepts left in Europe and even in Egypt. Solus-Sol-Sun is “The One” and the Greek name for Helios, the Most High. But there is a great difference between our Sun and its prototype, the Central Spiritual Sun. 4. The Objects of the Mysteries. Whether lesser or greater, Mysteries have always been graded. Theophany is the appearance of God to man; Theopathy, man’s assimilation of his divine nature; Theopneusty, inspiration or rather the power to hear the Voice of God. The last two are experienced when the neophyte passes through the crucifixion of flesh or matter. The Grecian Mysteries were identical with the Initiations of Buddhist and Hindu Adepts. In India, the candidate of the third degree of Initiation has two Gurus. But whether Eastern or Western, the Initiate dares all and keeps silent. Masonic Initiation was modelled on that of the Lesser Mysteries and remains an authority upon the three fundamental degrees. The triple duty of a Mason is to study whence he comes, what he is, and whither he goes. 5. Traces of the Mysteries. The Round Towers in Ireland and Asia were connected with the Vishvakarman and Vikartana rites. In later ages, the Initiates of the Left Path and the anthropomorphists turned them into phallic monuments. The key to the mystery of Initiation (and to the real Christ, not the blasphemous caricature of the Churches) lies on the difference between the terms Chrestos and Christos. There were two Messiahs, Chrest and Christ. Jesus was an Initiate of the Egyptian Mysteries, where the rite of the suffering Chrestos on his trial, and second birth as Christos (by regeneration), were enacted. It was on the seventh day, the third of his ultimate trial, that the Eastern neophyte arose as a regenerated man and returned to earth as triumphant conqueror of death, a Hierophant. Initiates are said to have “crushed the serpent’s head,” i.e., conquered their sensual nature. The Egyptian Initiates held the Rose as symbol of Nature, the mother and nourisher of man, represented as a virgin woman. The Brothers of the Rosy Cross, as a symbol of sexual procreation. The old Indian Mysteries of Initiation were brought to Greece by Orpheus, nine millennia before Homer and Hesiod. 6. The Last of the Mysteries in Europe. Alesia, Arles, and Bibractis, the last bastions of the Ancient Mysteries in Europe, are no more. Occult Wisdom is now replaced by absolute theocracy that displays its crowned priests to the ignorant masses. Whatever else Cheops might have done, he has not built the pyramid bearing his name. Neither Solomon his temple, nor Noah his arc, for that matter. The strict silence of the Initiates and the total loss of all written memorials of secret knowledge may explain why so little is known of the Ancient Mysteries. Yet, there is spiritual Alchemy and physical transmutation: their cradle is to be sought in the most distant times. 7. The Post-Christian Successors to the Mysteries. The Neo-Platonic School of Ammonius Saccas became the successor of the Eleusinian Mysteries and herald of the Eastern Secret Teachings — unveiling the long and laborious descent and re-ascent of the Divine Monad or Soul. Each of us have to pass through the “Valley of Thorns” before he emerges into the plains of divine light and rest. The Eclectic doctrines are strongly reflected in the Epistles of Paul and John the Evangelist. For it is not Judaism and Christianity that remodelled the ancient Pagan Wisdom, but rather the latter that put its heathen curb on the new “faith” and was further influenced by the Eclectic Theosophical system, the direct emanation of the Wisdom-Religion. Ammonius, Plotinus, Iamblichus, Proclus, were prominent Theosophists though they never claimed the title. All that is grand and noble in Christian theology comes from Neo-Platonism. Ammonius was a true Philaletheian, one of us. His Eclectic Theosophical School, a precursor and prototype of the modern Theosophical Movement, was made of the crumbs permitted to be gathered from the antediluvian lore. Woe to those who mock Divine Knowledge and betray her secrets. But those who are pure in thought and deed, and have trust and confidence in their immortal spirit, have nothing to fear.

Magic or Theurgy: Purpose and Pitfalls by Plato, Proclus, Helena Petrovna Blavatsky Pdf

Mastery of the universal magnetic sympathy that exists between men, animals, plants, and minerals, selects and directs powers by sympathy; and expels unwanted ones by antipathy. As love of physical beauty grows to an appreciation of divine beauty, so the old priests, realising the mutual alliance and sympathy that underpins all kingdoms of life, and investigating the kinship between the manifested world and the occult powers that govern it, they fathomed out the relationship between Concealed Potentiality and Infinite Potencies at every level. Inspired by the presence of a Divine Virtue within, the lower classes sing the praises of the pinnacle of their respective order; some intellectually, others rationally; some in a natural manner, others physically. Every order of being proceeds gradually, in a beautiful descent, from the highest to the lowest. Stones and plants honour the sun and, in turn, they receive the bounty of divine love according to their ruling divinities. Magic is based on the affinities between organic and inorganic bodies, the visible productions of the four kingdoms, and the invisible powers of the universe. Thus, inferior ranks of the same order invariably venerate their superiors. That is why the cock is very much feared and revered by the lion. Insights to phenomena allowed the old priests to understand the power of noumena, and to control the hidden forces of nature. By combining various odours into one, they demonstrated the unity of Divine Essence. For, while division weakens each part, unity restores the idea of their exemplar. A humble herb or a self-unconscious stone is often enough to bring into being divine works. The master key of Divine Magic or Practical Theurgy is the Neo-Platonic term Theophania, when the Over-Soul (Atma-Buddhi) of a virtuous man incarnates for purposes of revelation. Then, the Word is made flesh in actuality, not as a figure of speech. A temporary divine incarnation is termed trance; if life-long, samadhi, when the mystic may at times quit his body. Personal god versus Absoluteness is the most troublesome of all doctrines. Once the self-delusion of anthropomorphism is understood and overcome, every mortal will realise that he is but a reflection of his immortal counterpart. The sole aim of Practical Occultism or Theurgy is the conscious reunion of the part with the All. Many are those who are eager to study Occultism, but very few have even an approximate idea of the Science itself. What Simon termed Magic, we now call Theosophia, i.e., Divine Wisdom, Power, and Knowledge. Its source and basis lies in the holy union of Spirit and Thought (Nous and Epinoia), whether on the purely divine or the terrestrial plane. That union is Helena, the “marriage” of Atma-Buddhi (Nous) with Lower Manas (male-female, in this sphere only), through which Spirit and Thought become one here on earth and are endowed with divine faculties and powers. Theoretical Occultism is harmless but Practical Magic is perilous. The numerals of the Kabbalah are especially dangerous. Unity, physical and metaphysical, is the real basis of Occult Sciences. While the Aryans applied their Science of Correspondences to veil the most spiritual and sublime truths of nature, the Jews used their acumen to conceal the single most divine mystery of evolution, i.e., that of birth and generation, before deifying the generative organs. Only Pythagoras’ cosmological theory of numerals can reconcile Matter and Spirit, and cause each to demonstrate the truth about the other mathematically. Let us then allow the world cling to its gods, to whatever plane or realm they may belong. The true Occultist would be guilty of high treason to mankind, were he to break forever the old deities before he could replace them with the whole and unadulterated truth. And this he cannot do as yet. The Esotericism of Egypt was that of the whole world during the long ages of the Third Race for it was imparted by Divine Instructors, the primeval Seven “Sons of Light.”

Crystals, Jewels, Stones by Isidore Kozminsky Pdf

This book provides an exhaustive and comprehensive study of the lore and science of precious and semi-precious stones and crystals. Crystals have commanded the attention of thinkers, artists, mystics, magicians, astrologers, alchemists, and all who appreciate beauty. Intimately and mysteriously formed in the fires of Earth’s inner essence, what is the meaning of these exquisitely shaped and colored gifts of the sacred bounty of Nature. Occultist Isidore Kozminsky explores the use of precious and semi-precious stones in fields as far flung as healing and design, practical esoteric energy channeling and decoration, as well as in powerful magical talismans by which specific energies may be invoked, and as artistic objects of great beauty. Inspiring mythic tales are balanced with practical instructions and knowledge about the astrological sympathies of crystals and the energy work and healing properties associated with all the major categories of precious stones. From Plato to Leonardo da Vinci, Kozminsky traces crystal lore through the researches of astrologers, magi, alchemists and Hermetic philosophers--all of whom explored the use of stones in the Universal Order and Harmony of the natural world.

Divine Heliolatry is neither astrological Astrolatry, nor Idolatry by Helena Petrovna Blavatsky Pdf

The Ancients have neither mistaken stars for gods or angels, nor the sun for the highest gods and God, but have worshipped only the Spirit of all — though they reverenced minor gods who are identical with the hosts of Angels, Cherubs, and Planetary Archangels. Saturn, the Father of Gods, must not be confused with his namesake — the planet with its rings, moons, and moonlets. The two, though in one sense identical, are equivalent to physical man and his soul. Nevertheless, astrology is proclaimed as a sinful science and, together with Occultism, tabooed by the Churches. If Mars is the personified strength of the One highest impersonal Deity, Mercury personified as its omniscience, Jupiter as its omnipotency, and so on, then the superstition of the Pagan has indeed become the religion of the masses of the “civilized nations.” Mikael is the regent of planet Saturn. He is also the informing Spirit of the Sun and Jupiter, and even of Venus. The Sabæans separated and distinguished planet Saturn from its God far more than the Roman Catholics do their angels from their stars. The dogmas and rituals of the Romish Church seem like pages torn out from the history of Occultism, plagiarised, and then distorted. A very thin line separates the Kabbalistic and Chaldæan Theogonies from the Roman Catholic Angelology and Theodicy. The history of the Jesuits is intimately bound up with that of Occultism. It is that Protean and all-pervading organisation which has kept back the great truths of Occultism, making its name synonymous with charlatanism, fraud, and demon worship. To this purpose was the Inquisition organised. The history of Jesuitism is the history of assassinations and poisonings, underhand dark plottings against Kings, Princes, Churches, States, and solitary individuals who consciously or unconsciously cross their path. Many a maniac in a madhouse owes the calamities which drove him there to their contriving. Divine Astrology is for the Initiates; superstitious Astrolatry, for the profane. Astrolatry, or the adoration of the heavenly host, is the natural result of only half-revealed Astrology, whose Adepts carefully concealed from the uninitiated masses its Occult principles and the Wisdom imparted to them by the Regents of the Planets. Sidereal influence is dual: there is a physical and a physiological influence, that of exotericism; and the high spiritual, intellectual, and moral influence, imparted by the knowledge of the Planetary Gods. The Celestial Bodies are the cause of all that happens in our sublunary world; they do influence human actions; but not all the effects produced by them are unavoidable. All great astrologers admitted that man could react against the influence of the stars. The origin of Astrology is lost in hoary antiquity, contrary to the plea of some Orientalists who declare that the Zodiac was the invention of the Greeks of the Macedonian period. Primitive Astrology was as far above modern Astrology, as the Planets and Zodiacal signs are above the lamp-posts. All the Zodiacal monuments in Egypt were chiefly astronomical. The Heavenly Bodies are closely related, during each Manvantara, with the mankind of that special cycle. Each great character born during that period has (as every other mortal has, only in a far stronger degree) his destiny outlined within his proper constellation or star, traced as a self-prophecy (an anticipated autobiography), by the indwelling spirit of that particular star. Primitive Occult Astrology was on the decline when Daniel, the last of the Jewish Initiates of the old school, became the chief of the Magi and Astrologers of Chaldæa. In those days, even Egypt that had her wisdom from the same source as Babylon, had degenerated from her former grandeur, and her glory had begun to fade out. Chaldæan Astrology was believed in by most of the great men in history. Judiciary Astrology is used today by the Kabbalists. Eliphas Levi, the French Magus, teaches its rudiments in his “Dogme et Rituel de la Haute Magie.” But the key to ceremonial or ritualistic Astrology is lost to Europe. Hence, our century of materialism shrugs it shoulders and sees in Astrology — a pretender.
