Symbol, Service, and Song by J. Nathan Clayton Pdf

In the Old Testament, the Levites stand as key ministry leaders for the worship of the people of God, from their origins with Moses and the tabernacle, to their service at the Jerusalem temple, to their roles in the postexilic period. This study proposes a multidimensional reading of the texts centered on the Levites in the Davidic narratives of 1 Chronicles 10-29. From a literary point of view, the notion that the Levites are closely associated with the symbol of God's presence is explored. From a historical perspective, the roles of the Levites in expanding the service to God and his people is examined. And from a theological perspective, the means by which the Levites facilitate the song of God's people is studied. Overall, this work seeks to defend the idea that these texts contribute significantly to the rhetorical argumentation, the historiographic method, and the biblical-theological meaning of the canonical books of Chronicles generally, and of the Davidic narratives of 1 Chronicles 10-29 specifically, as they emphasize the central role played by proper Levitical worship leadership at the time of David and during the challenging situation of the Chronicler's Yehudite postexilic audience.

The Service of Song by A. G. Stacy Pdf

Excerpt from The Service of Song: A Treatise on Singing in Private Devotion, in the Family and in the School, and in the Worshiping Congregation The Author Of this unpretending volume has long looked in sadness upon the indifference manifested by many in the service Of song. Thousands who have the ability to sing maintain a careless silence in the church; and Of those who sing, many are evidently destitute, to a very great extent, of the spirit of worship. Even ministers are but too frequently seen burying their own talent for song, while they allow habitual remissness in Others without uttering a word Of instruction, encouragement or warning. Observation of this inattention to a matter of prime importance convinced the writer, several years ago, that something should be done to bring up the practice of the Church to the Scriptural rule. Supposing that there were already extant books and tracts on the subject of Praise in Song, we searched many private libraries, but could find no works of the kind. Special inquiry was then made at sundry book-stores and publishing houses, but with little success. From Columbia and Charles ton, S. C., Nashville, Tenn., and zoo Mulberry street, New York, and other cities, nothing could be Obtained but a few books on Psalm-singing, Hymnology, and Musical history. Victorious Service Songs by Charles Hutchinson Gabriel Pdf

We believe that our friends and the great public will be better pleased with Victorious Service Songs than any other book we have published. Twenty years of association in writing, selecting and publishing gospel songs, combined with the knowledge acquired by observation in conducting the music of the largest congregations and choruses ever assembled for Christian worship, has given us a wealth of experience, the result of which we are passing on to you in this volume. From the beginning of our song ministry our ambition has been to raise the standard of gospel hymns and songs. We realized that this could not be brought about suddenly, but must be accomplished through a steady and natural growth. While fully appreciating the value of many of the old standard hymns (which appear in the hymn section in the larger type), we are firmly convinced that the tuneful, melodious gospel song must not be lost if we are to attract and retain the interest of young people in the service of song -- that vital factor of importance to the present and future activities of the church. With a reasonable number of new songs, together with many of the popular modern favorites, we have herein included a large number of the most famous hymns and tunes of the church -- a combination of both new and old songs that will admirably serve each and every department of the church work and worship. - Preface.
